Things you may not know about creating and selling online courses in private practice...👇
I see so much confusion out there about this topic, and since it’s been my bread and butter for the last 10+ years, I thought I’d pop in here to offer any assistance to those interested.
Please post any questions you have in the comments - I’ll keep an eye on this post throughout today and we’ll see how we go 🙏
In the meantime, here are some titbits that you may find helpful:
✨ AHPRA doesn’t regulate online courses, the TGA does and there are different compliance requirements (and insurance coverage) depending if the online course is classed as a ‘medical device’ delivering active intervention.
✨ For the most part, with some specific exceptions, it’s not advisable to sell online courses to existing clinical clients or individuals on your waitlist – especially if you’re a solo practitioner. In general, doing that has limited clinical and commercial utility, and introduces a whole host of ethical challenges.
✨ Using your knowledge and skillset in your profession to create an online course and offering it under your protected title counts as ‘practicing the profession’, so all the usual ethical and professional practice considerations apply, even if you call yourself a ‘coach’. This includes the provisions of the new Code, particularly when it comes to dual relationships and digital competencies.
✨ All the usual AHPRA advertising guidelines apply too, including the use of Testimonials relating to the efficacy, effectiveness, or cost-effectiveness of the course (even if it’s ‘non-clinical’ or ‘just psychoeducation’).
✨ Creating an effective online course and effectively generating predictable and reliable revenue from it are entirely different skillsets, so it’s very important to understand what it is you’re trying to achieve by creating an online course (and if there are better products or ways of achieving that goal for your business).
✨ There are organisations sponsored by the Department of Health who offer therapeutic online courses for free (or at low cost) to the public, which you can ‘prescribe’ to your clients who may not be able to access 1:1 intervention. These courses have been rigorously studied in RCTs, are recommended in Clinical Practice Guidelines, delivered using advanced and privacy-compliant digital systems that allow for adequate risk and outcome monitoring, and are reimbursed by private health insurance providers. For this reason, it is generally not advisable to create online courses targeting clinical conditions or purporting to address symptoms of diagnosable conditions (unless they follow the TGA guidelines).
👉 If you’d love to diversify your private practice and create a thriving online business selling online courses, programs, and products as a health professional, you do need to master specific business, marketing, and professional practice skills and strategies.
Unfortunately, most of the business advice online about how to create and sell online courses is simply not applicable (and sometimes even risky) to psychologists and allied health practitioners, which often leaves clinicians confused and fearful of utilising this powerful, business-building opportunity.
Which is why I'm so passionate about this area, so if you have any questions, please pop them in the comments below! 👇
