Secondly, thank you! Thank you for your support. I appreciate all the messages, calls and help. My family were fed every night while I was away, seriously amazing! We’ve been blown away by the generosity of family, friends and strangers.
How good is life?! We are so grateful for what we have.

👋🏻 Firstly, apologies for my absence. The mundane nature of my rehab and the grilling mental load of my recovery has kept me away from social media. As we grapple with the realities of my injuries, and how life has changed I’ve been keeping quiet.
However, I have made progress. I’ve been working hard. My rehab is going well and my new physio has been amazing. I can do most normal daily activities, take the dog and Freya for a slow walk, and drive; albeit with lots of pain but it’s doable. I’ve also gained some weight. My total loss was 15kg and I’ve regained 5kg 💪
I’m yet to get on the bike and sadly physical work is a long way off. PTSD is a killer but I’ve got great support.

Anyway, new things are coming for Perth body mechanics, so keep your eyes peeled.

Walking:

The last 11 weeks have been somewhat of a slow blur within a nightmare you can’t wake from.
I’ve been home for 10 days now and the changes have been emotionally and physically massive, I’m tired but I’m pushing hard.
Rejoining the family full time was harder than I expected, taking the hospital institute’s boy and putting him back in the real world 🌍 shook me and the other inhabitants.
I had to learn to slow down, remain calm in the face of chaos and find the best way to fit in.

Monday 1 week ago I stood up.
1 week on from that and I’m walking without aid. Today I’ve been without my🦽 all together.
Having walking taken away from you and then getting it back, that again was the gift I was given and I am still not able to process the depth of it all yet.

I’m still in plenty of pain, I’m unsteady, I walk like lurch and continuously get told “sit down, you’re doing too much”. But I was never going to do this any differently. I’ll Bulldog this the whole way through.

Must be about time to look for a new bike?

2.5 months/10 weeks to the day - almost to the minute since I got mowed down.
69 days since I last stood up. Today at 3:45pm I did it. I stood up.
I didn’t get this far without putting in a lot of work, mental and physical, finding motivation everyday in the things I love. Of course the first was my family and my friends but wanting to have a swim in the ocean and ride my bike (non-existent ownership at this point) with my dad, my buddies and my kids.
My biggest shout out goes to who’s had to drop normality to be there for me and our little family. Making room in your life for a broken husband, hospital visits, home mods, eye surgery for the cat and a baby that is determined to destroy you. I look forward to you healing too.

I’m well aware that I still have a very long way to go. This part of the rehab is going to be much slower. But the 🥕 was dangled today with the physio wheeling in an exercise 🚲!
I want to ride again much to my wife’s dismay, but this wasn’t a bike accident.

Discharge:
Well, it’s happened. The day has come! After 65 days - 4 weeks in Royal Perth Hospital, 5 weeks in Fiona Stanley’s Rehab Facility. I’ve made it through the biggest stint I’ll have away from my family in this journey.
I’ve experienced what I think ‘everything’ might actually mean. I’ll let you contemplate that for a moment.
I’ll do that cliche thing that everyone does, but everyone actually means.
So, from the absolute depth of my heart thank you, all of you. Whether it be the guy that took my meal tray with a smile, my friends, my family, my wife, my kids and even the and you all made this journey with me. Texts, calls, cards, thoughts, likes, DMs, drop ins, biscuits, flowers, chocolate, lego, grand finals, tears, laughter, bacon and bikies. There are memories in scattered deep hospital brain I’ll be digging out and processing for years to come.

From here, it’s hydro and pool work for 3-4weeks living at home!!! I do have to go back for a week maybe 2 in Rehab again to do the ‘walking on land’ thing that humans do. 👣 then it’s all up to me to get 💪🏼💪🏼.

Hydro:

Today I stood up for the first time in 9 weeks! A momentous occasion that coincides with the exact day 9 weeks ago I was run down. 😬
Despite needing to be in water at chest height, my brain 🧠 still struggled to compute the concept of ‘doing walking’ 🥴. I was unsteady, like a baby🦒. My pelvis was so painful but it’s slow steps. I’ve been yearning for this day. I have already preloaded my mind with the drive of hitting the next big challenge. 💪🏼💪🏼

So far I’ve been relentless - hitting the gym and doing whatever else I could on my shoulder and knee just waiting for this green light- Now I have a new challenge with new goals to reach and smash.

It’s unfortunate I am able to ‘walk’ just 2 days before I say goodbye to this place for a few weeks but ………..
I’m going home!!! Albeit only for a few weeks and in ♿️, but to be back with my wife and kids is going to be so so so good!

I’ll be back here again in a month for a few weeks when I can properly learn to walk on land again.

Until then

The Surgeon:.

2 MONTHS AGO this week was my ‘accident’. The emotions, the story and the stories that go with the time that has past are many and still unfinished.
One thing that remains the same is upper body rehab in the gym…..again.
Today’s assessment of scapulohumeral rhythm 🎶 Plenty of non-symmetry on that left side!

On another note - the ortho cleared me for HYDROTHERAPY!!!!! Can’t wait! Tomorrow I can stand for the first time in 2 months. Albeit in chest heigh water. So excited.

Rehab: The work bench.
The last 4 weeks I’ve been in the State Rehab Facility - 1 week ago I was given the go ahead to start weight bearing on my left arm and shoulder after the scapula and clavicle fractures stabilizing sufficiently.
I still can’t start weight bearing on my legs until late November. .
I’m making the most of these facilities spending around 3.5hrs a day in the gym.
It’s about the slow game, focusing on , concentrating on maximal contraction at end point. This is

𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀

Don’t leave the house without your helmet! It was a miracle I survived my accident and I have no doubt that this helmet was part of that miracle.
After being hit, I was pulled under the car and dragged meters along the road; this is what was left.

📷 1&2: helmet looking not too bad. 3: what was left of my kit, earphones, and glasses 4: torn shoes
