You probably know that grab rails in the toilet and bathroom can greatly improve your safety but did you know that you can buy them from a hardware store?

My local hardware store (aka. warehouse) has a great range of grab rails… black ones, silver ones, long and short ones, smooth ones, rough ones, ones with suction cups and ones without!!! If that is not confusing enough, where do you put them? Vertical , horizontal or even diagonal? Over the taps, under the taps or alongside?

AT OT is a mobile home visiting service which specialises in improving the safety and independence of our clients. Your AT OT has had 40 years experience in choosing grab rails and knowing exactly how to position them.

You may not have as many steps as this at the entry to your home, but care needs to be taken!
A high percentage of people who visit hospitals after a fall on stairs or steps in their homes are seniors. When seniors fall, the consequences can be severe and long-lasting.
Most falls on stairs can be prevented. Prevention starts by keeping in mind that there are risks in using stairs. Good planning and simple strategies can help prevent falls and injuries.

People with health and mobility issues that impact their ability to use stairs safely should consult an occupational therapist. An occupational therapist can provide advice on the most appropriate changes to the home and personal behaviour to reduce the risk of falling on stairs.

AT Occupational Therapy is a mobile home visiting service which specialises in improving the safety and independence of our clients. I can work with you privately or through your Care Provider to achieve a safer home environment. You may be eligible for Government assistance to help fund the modifications needed.
