3 Skills Your Son is Learning While Gaming:

Conflict: Handling glitches without quitting.

Boundaries: Asking for a turn or a specific character.

Collaboration: Working together to beat the "big boss."

3 Reasons we love Pickleball (and why it matters for his future):

1. Better Focus:
To hit the ball, he has to watch it move fast. This is the same "muscle" he’ll use one day to stay focused at a job or while cooking a meal.

2. Teamwork:
Playing with a mentor means learning to communicate. It’s "social practice" without the pressure of a classroom.

3. The "Fun" Factor:
When he’s having fun, he’s brave enough to try new things.

It looks like a game, but it’s actually building the grit he needs for life.

Your son doesn't need to be "pushed" to grow. He just needs to feel safe.

When the environment is calm (like a sunset at the lake), the confidence comes out naturally.

It started with a simple request.

"Can you help with the dishes?"

The first answer was what you’d expect from any young man: a bit of a groan. Nobody loves bubbles and scrubbing.

But then, our Mentor sat down with him.

They didn't talk about chores.

They talked about leadership. We explained that by stepping up, he wasn’t just cleaning a plate, he was showing the others what they can do to support their community.

He didn't just wash them; he took pride in it.

This is the first domino of living on his own.

Remember trying to teach your son a "lesson" and having them tune out?

That’s why we bring in the mentors.

It’s amazing what a young man will learn when it’s his mentor, not his mum, dropping the +10 card on him!

When we first started the programs, the idea of a public park felt like a big "mission."

There were a lot of unknowns. Who would be there? How would we feel?

This day was different.

It started with a team effort.

Unloading the gear and setting up together isn’t just about the equipment, it’s about taking ownership.

Then, the magic happened. No prompts and no stress, just two mates locked in a Pickleball battle.

Seeing them figure out the score and cheer each other on is what real independence looks like.

Even our mentors got in on the action with a classic game of "Piggy in the Middle".

We believe growth only happens when he feels safe, and nothing feels safer than laughing with a mentor who actually wants to play too.

The best part?

The walk back to the Hub.

There were no "big feelings" or exhaustion.

Just the quiet confidence of a group of young men who know they belong in their community.

"Success looks like this! 📸

There is a special kind of magic that happens when our mentors and young men sit down at the same table. In these photos, you’ll see the Mentors and the crew mid-laugh.

Why does this matter?

Because a young man who feels comfortable joking with his mentor is a young man who feels safe enough to learn.

Today’s big win was seeing the whole table navigate a complex trade with kindness and clear communication.

The 'Catan Skills' they practiced today.

Patience, Eye Contact, and Compromise.

Are the exact same skills they'll use when they start their first job or move out on their own.

Growth only happens when he feels safe.

That’s why we play games like chess with mentors who "get it."

It’s a low-pressure way to practice big-pressure feelings.

It looks like a pile of straws. It’s actually a lesson in not giving up.

To keep the egg safe, this young man and his Mentor had to agree on a plan.

But what happens when they have different ideas?

In this moment, they aren't just building a tower; they are practicing how to stay calm when someone says

"I think we should do it this way instead."

When he feels safe to disagree, he learns how to lead.

There is a special kind of magic that happens when our young men and mentors get together for a game of Monopoly Deal.

It’s not just about who has the most property sets.

It’s about the fact that for half an hour, the pressure is off.

There are no "wrong answers" or "tests", just a group of guys laughing, competing, and being themselves.

When a young man feels safe and supported by a mentor, he’s willing to take risks. And taking risks is how we grow!

Our school holiday program reached a new level.

During our pickleball round-robin, something cool happened.

Instead of just playing by the book, the guys started inventing their own "off the wall" shots and tricky slices.

They weren't just hitting a ball; they were communicating, laughing, and adapting together.

When you feel safe, you feel brave enough to try something new.
