Friday nights with the Night Out crew are usually pretty high-energy, and this week at the park was no different. We had the volleyball net up, the badminton rackets swinging, and a lot of hungry young men ready for a feed.
But here’s the thing about our programs: the best moments usually happen when the "plan" stops and the "real life" starts.
We headed over to the public BBQs and we put the question out to the group:
"Alright, who’s going to be our Head Chef tonight?"
Before we could even finish the sentence, one of our young men had his hand up. No hesitation. No "maybe later." He was straight over to the hot plate, tongs in hand, ready to get to work.
Watching him work was a massive win for all of us.
He didn't just stand there flipping patties. He took total ownership. When the grill got crowded, he didn't get overwhelmed, he simply looked over and asked for a bit of assistance to keep things moving.
In a classroom, you might talk about "communication" and "initiative."
But at a public park on a Friday night?
We saw it in action. He wasn’t just cooking burgers; he was practicing how to lead a team, how to handle pressure, and how to look after his mates.
He made sure every single person had their plate served before he even thought about his own dinner.
It’s easy to think that growth happens in big, scary leaps.
But really?
It happens over a public BBQ with a group of friends who make you feel safe enough to say, "I've got this."
We’re so proud of the way this young man led by example.
The burgers were cooked to perfection, but the confidence he built?
That’s the part that’s going to last.
