Choosing a gift for someone with Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) isn’t about picking something “visual” - it’s about choosing something that supports how they access information.

Many adults with CVI benefit from tools that:

✨ reduce visual clutter
✨ offer adjustable contrast, lighting, or text size
✨ provide alternative sensory input like audio or touch

Think adaptive technology, audio-supported devices, tactile items, or everyday tools that can be personalised to their visual needs.

A thoughtful gift is one that supports independence, accessibility, and comfort, not just appearance 💛

For children with CVI, the best gifts are often the ones that support sensory learning, not just visual play.

Many children benefit from toys that:

✨ light up or glow

✨ use high contrast colours

✨ include sound, music, or vibration

✨ are simple, predictable, and visually uncluttered

These kinds of toys help children explore, engage, and learn in ways their brains can process more easily.

When we choose gifts that match a child’s visual needs, we’re supporting development, not limiting it 💛

✨ For our final day, we’re focusing on supporting the brain - not just the eyes. 🧠

For individuals with CVI or visual processing challenges, reducing competing visual information gives the brain more time to understand what it’s seeing, making tasks feel calmer and more manageable.

Here are simple ways to slow the visual world down:

✨ Present one item at a time to reduce visual competition

✨ Minimise background noise and movement

✨ Pause briefly between steps or instructions

✨ Remove unnecessary décor from surfaces

✨ Use solid-colour play mats or black trays to help toys stand out

✨ Clear the table before starting any activity

These small adjustments help the brain focus, process, and succeed - and they sit at the heart of supportive, functional vision therapy 💛

✨ Today’s focus is on LIGHTING - one of the most underestimated supports for low vision. 💡

Harsh overhead lights can create glare, wash out important details, and make it harder for the eyes and brain to focus.

For individuals with low vision or visual processing challenges, this extra glare can lead to visual fatigue, reduced comfort, and increased difficulty completing everyday tasks.

Soft, warm, layered lighting allows the visual system to work more comfortably and more efficiently.

Here’s how to create a vision-friendly lighting setup at home:

✨ Swap ceiling lights for lamps

Table lamps and floor lamps create gentle, directed light that supports focus without overwhelming the eyes.

✨ Use warm light bulbs, not cool white

Warm tones are softer, reduce glare, and create more comfortable environments for reading, play, and winding down.

✨ Install motion-activated lights

Perfect for hallways and bathrooms, they increase safety at night without sudden brightness or needing to locate a switch.

Calmer lighting = calmer visual system.

This simple home swap supports comfort, safety, and independence throughout the entire day.

✨ Welcome to Day 3 of our “Simple Home Swaps” series! 🏡🔁

🗺Today is all about making home spaces easier to navigate and understand.
For many people with low vision or visual processing differences, clear boundaries and predictable organisation can make movement and daily routines feel much calmer and more confident.

Here are some simple swaps to support this:

✨ Add colour around door frames to highlight room transitions

✨ Use bright mats at entryways to define thresholds

✨ Place tactile or high-contrast dots on light switches

✨ Use bold labels or colour-coded drawers in wardrobes

✨ Keep bedside surfaces minimal so essential items stand out

✨ Choose lamps instead of overhead lighting for softer, clearer visibility

These small changes help create a home layout that feels predictable, safe, and easier to move through every day.

✨ Day 2 is all about making things easier to SEE - by boosting contrast. 🖤🤍

When colours blend together, the visual system has to work much harder to separate objects from the background.

High contrast gives the brain clear signals about where an object begins and ends, helping items “pop” visually and making daily tasks much easier.

Here’s how to boost contrast at home:

✨ Add bright tape to step edges and other transitions

✨ Use dark mugs on light benches (and light mugs on dark benches)

✨ Choose dark cutting boards for light-coloured foods

These small swaps help objects stand out instantly, improving safety and reducing visual confusion.

Contrast makes mealtimes easier too:

✨ Use light plates for dark foods and dark plates for light foods

✨ Add non-slip, high-contrast placemats to define the eating space

✨ Offer tactile cups with grips or ridges for better hand placement

These supportive choices help children and adults locate food, utensils, and boundaries more confidently - making mealtimes more independent and less stressful.

✨ Welcome to Day 1 of our redesigned “Simple Home Swaps” series! 🏡🔁

Today we’re starting with the foundation: reducing visual clutter.

This single change makes every other strategy work better.

When a space is visually busy, the eyes, and the brain, work much harder to find what matters.

For someone with low vision or visual processing challenges, this can turn simple daily tasks into something overwhelming or frustrating.

Creating clear, predictable spaces helps:

💙 reduce visual overload

💙make important items easier to locate

💙support smoother and more independent routines

Easy ways to reduce visual noise at home:

✨ Keep high-use items in consistent “home bases”

✨ Use trays or baskets to group related objects together

✨ Clear background clutter before starting any activity

These small shifts often makes the biggest differences.

We start here because everything else builds on this foundation 💛
