I love my Fridays at the FitRight HQ clinic!!

I’m about to start my shift and today I get to help women with:

💜 Overactive pelvic floor and associated pain
💜 Blocked milk ducts
💜 Putting in place a postnatal core exercise program to do at home
💜 Reassessing how someone managing a prolapse has gone with increasing her load and intensity with gym work
💜 A pelvic floor and abs assessment for a lady with a 6 week old baby

I never forget how lucky I am to have a job where I go away from each shift feeling like I’ve made a positive difference in someone else’s journey 💜

With community transmission of COVID inevitably on the rise, we have been working hard being the scenes at FitRight HQ to come up with our protocols - including easier access to Telehealth options, our policy on vaccinations, and clinic protocols to keep everyone as safe as possible 🥰

Here’s what we will be asking of patients:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 Sign in using the Safe WA app
💜 Answer COVID screening questions on arrival
💜 Sanitise hands on arrival
💜 Wear a well fitting mask to all appointments (N95/P2/KN95 recommended)
💜 Arrive at the appointment time, not early, to minimise patient crossover.
💜 Try to attend your appointment on your own rather than with friends or family members (babies are of course welcome)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And here’s what we will commit to doing as staff:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 Regularly cleaning touch points in the clinic including door handles, desk, bathroom etc
💜 Wiping down treatment beds, chairs & exercise equipment with Clinell wipes (hospital grade) between patients
💜 Maximising airflow in the clinic by leaving the doors open, having AC running, & an air filter for inside the treatment room
💜 Wearing N95 masks which provide maximum protection
💜 Social distancing where possible - including chairs being more spaced out

Regarding vaccinations - At this stage we have double vaccination requirements for group clinical exercise classes only, other clinic appointments can continue to be accessed without having to prove vaccination status. As the situation changes and transmission increases we will still continue to accept patients who are unvaccinated, however this will be only with certain staff members & at certain times - please contact us if you have queries about this HQ@fitright.physio

Very exciting news… our FitRight HQ team is growing again!​​​​​​​​

Say Hi to Veronica Thompson! 👋🏻 She started with us in the Applecross clinic yesterday and we are ecstatic to have her there!​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
💜Veronica graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2013 & has been working as a musculoskeletal physio since then. She very quickly realised the importance & power of exercise rehab, and completed Polestar training in 2015. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
💜After this, she followed her passion for travel & worked on the ski fields of Japan, as well as in corporate London. At the end of 2020 she returned to her hometown of Perth to follow her next passion – helping & empowering women – by beginning her Masters in Pelvic Health & Continence. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
Veronica enjoys treating women all throughout their life-stages; be it pelvic floor concerns, pregnancy related issues, postnatal rehab (including abdominal separation), sexual pain, return to running, musculoskeletal aches and any issues that arise around the time of menopause. She loves to help clients reach their goals and to take a very active approach to get them there. ​​​​​​​​

Outside of work Veronica loves staying active herself, & will often be found running, swimming, doing yoga, walking around the river or down at the beach. She is also an avid traveller & foodie – & can never be found far away from a good cinnamon scroll!​​​​​​​​

Over at FitRight HQ, the physio team are busy readying ourselves for the process of keeping you (our valued patients) as safe as possible as the borders open. We have stocked up on masks (as modelled by Jess V 😷 ) and other protective gear, we are all vaccinated (I got boosted today, as you can see Benji and I celebrated with donuts), and we have things like rapid antigen tests and an air purifier on order. We will be taking advice on what to do about vaccination mandates and will keep you updated - and if you can’t come to the clinic or choose not to, we will have Telehealth readily available. We care greatly about the health of our clients and staff and we thank you for your support as we navigate this new territory! 💜

One thing that Jess and I spoke about when planning our goals and ethos for FitRight HQ was that we wanted to make sure we could be as available as possible for breastfeeding women who needed consults for laser and ultrasound therapy.

A quick overview:

💥 Laser - low level laser therapy can help speed up wound healing and is used for ni**le damage and pain (in conjunction with lactation consulting for optimal latch)

🙌🏼 Ultrasound - therapeutic ultrasound is used to decrease inflammation, and is therefore helpful when there is breast inflammation during mastitis.

I can remember in previous years, before I owned a clinic, having patients contact me over the Christmas period distraught because they knew how much these treatments could help and they couldn’t access them.

Over the last few days we have squeezed in laser and ultrasound treatments even though there have been public holidays and our hours have been reduced.

The women have been so appreciative and it feels like the best Christmas present we could give our community.

Merry Christmas from the FitRight HQ physio team! From left - Cat, Anna, Taryn, Jess V and Jess H!

It’s been a wild ride, starting a clinic. When Jess H and I spent months and months planning and mapping out the possible scenarios and if we were going to definitely be able to cover costs and make this work… the growth that has actually happened is beyond what we even optimistically mapped out at the upper end of our projections.

But the biggest win of all? This amazing team. We have a FB messenger group where we run case studies by each other and ask for advice or whether anyone knows the latest research on a certain topic (it’s always Jess V who does 😆) - and it’s like a dream come true. I’ve learnt and consolidated more in the last six months than in any period of time before, because I have this intelligent, knowledgable team to bounce ideas off. It means I am so much more certain that I’m giving my patients the best care possible, and it means that some patients end up with a team approach to management that they really need, and previously would have only achieved by visiting multiple different clinics.

It’s also meaning that more of my FitRight class participants are being Co-managed by the team at the clinic and I can see their progress happening more quickly.

Thank you to everyone who has attended FitRight HQ over the past six months, we hope you’ve enjoyed the experience of being a patient in a clinic where the physios have a truly collaborative approach 💜

Baby cuddling volunteers needed! 💜

If you love babies and toddlers and could help us out with the following classes, we would be so appreciative (and we know their Mums will be too, so that they can exercise with their FitRight Physio safe in the knowledge that their baby is being cared for in the same room).

Ardross - Monday 9:45-10:45am (this is usually a Toddler&Me class but currently has an influx of 3-6 month olds to cuddle!!)

O’Connor Baby&Me Aqua Tuesdays 12:30-1:30pm

I went home after my shift on Monday and gave myself a little high five 🖐🏻 😆

Every one of my patients had made significant improvements - either symptoms had improved, or pelvic floor had gotten a lot stronger, or pelvic floor overactivity and pain had significantly reduced or abdominal muscle separation was much firmer and stronger.

I also had a new patient whose main aim was to understand how to recruit her ‘core’ muscles correctly during pilates because she’s been doing classes for years and he always felt like she’s straining her back and not activating the muscles that’s she’s supposed to. Within the session we completely changed the way she was recruiting her abs and pelvic floor and she was consistently getting it!

It feels so good to work in a profession where you help people on a daily basis, and where positive changes are tangible.

I know the other physios at FitRight HQ feel like this too.

Jess H was telling me about a patient who was able to go up stairs without holding the rails for the first time in years after a few treatment sessions. I hear regular stories like this and I think Jess might be a superhero in disguise 🦸‍♀️

💜 What can I do in Pregnancy to prevent Diastasis Recti? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The short answer to this question is... nothing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Firstly, Diastasis Recti is a NORMAL ADAPTATION TO PREGNANCY. In the third trimester, 100% of women have abdominal muscle separation that would be classified as DR.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So we aren’t trying to prevent it. But most likely what the person who asked this question was meaning was ‘what can I do in pregnancy to improve the healing of my abdominal muscle separation after birth?’⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately... the answer is still that there is no evidence from research that any particular program or exercise done during pregnancy will lead to a decreased risk of a persistent separation afterwards.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But for what it’s worth, here is my expert opinion on the matter...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 learn how to correctly use the pelvic floor and deepest layer of abdominal muscles (called transverse Abdominus, or TA) during your pregnancy and get into the habit of regular practice.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 keep globally strong during pregnancy - the stronger your legs and arms abs trunk are, the less strain you’ll probably be putting through the midline of the abdomen during exercise and daily movements.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 get shown how to identify when and if you’re ‘doming’ with movement or exercise during pregnancy, and if you notice this, learn how to change the way you use your muscles, or learn an alternate way of moving, to avoid this strain on the tissues in the midline.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even if this hasn’t been shown to PREVENT it, it certainly sets you up to be ready for your best recovery if you have a significant Diastasis after birth.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
