🚨 New research we’re proud to be part of

At Thriving in Motion, we’re committed to evidence-informed, inclusive care, which is why our collaboration with MHEX matters.

Our latest study exploring eating and exercise experiences in trans and gender diverse adults has just been accepted for publication - and the findings are important.

Across 158 participants:
β†’ 37.3% reported a lifetime eating disorder diagnosis
β†’ 32.3% are currently experiencing clinical-level symptoms
β†’ 15.2% met criteria for compulsive exercise
β†’ 88% identified as neurodivergent

What stood out most is how gender identity shapes relationships with food, movement, and the body sometimes directly (e.g., using exercise or restriction to affirm identity), and often through broader experiences like minority stress, anxiety, and body disconnection.

We also saw that:
β€’ Binary-identifying trans individuals had higher odds of compulsive exercise
β€’ Compulsive exercise was more often driven by guilt and self-worth β€” not enjoyment
β€’ Structural barriers remain significant β€” from gendered spaces to safety concerns in gyms

This is exactly why inclusive, affirming, and adaptable exercise environments matter.
Because everyone deserves to move in ways that feel safe, supported, and empowering. πŸ’™πŸ©·πŸ€

Last year, Thriving staff member Meagan completed the Margaret River Ultra solo β€” 80 km of sand, trail and elevation in 14:19.

This year, she’s going again. But not just the 80 km.

Meagan is taking on the MRU Grand Slam: 80 km on the Saturday, then the marathon (42 km) on the Sunday. Back to back. On trail. Through the sand.

The physical demand of this is real, the Margaret River course is known for its soft sand sections and technical trail, which adds significantly to fatigue compared to road running. The mental side of toeing the start line on Sunday after what Saturday throws at you is a whole different challenge again.

Meagan has put in the training, she has her support crew sorted, and she is ready.

We’ll be cheering her on every step of the way. πŸ’ͺ

When movement spaces are inclusive, supportive, and affirming, everything shifts.

We are proud to be a Telethon7 Perth Beneficiary in 2026! πŸ₯³

We are incredibly grateful for their continued support in funding our Kids & Teens and Mental Health Program for another year.

This support means more young people can access safe, inclusive, and affirming spaces to move their bodies, build confidence, connect with others, and support their mental wellbeing.

It enables us to reach those who are often left out of traditional sport and recreation, and to keep showing up with programs that are not only evidence-informed, but truly life-changing.

Thank you for backing this work and the young people at the heart of it πŸ’›

Running for the courtyard πŸ›
This year, every kilometre our teams run at the Rapid Ascent Margaret River Ultra is going towards something concrete (or to renovate some concrete!) the courtyard of our new Thriving in Motion facility.

We’re raising $15,000 to create an inclusive sports and activity courtyard: a welcoming outdoor space where WA children and families of all abilities can move, play and connect.

For the past six years, Thriving staff, families and friends have taken on the Margaret River Ultra to raise funds and awareness for our work. What started as a bold idea has become a meaningful annual tradition.

If you want to support us, you can donate directly at the link in our bio. Every contribution goes straight to making this space a reality.

For many of our kids, movement hasn’t always felt safe or welcoming. πŸ’•

It can look like:
– Sitting out
– Feeling judged
– Not knowing where they fit

We wanted to change that... we are creating a space specifically tailored for our kids and families, and we can't wait to share it with you 🫢

Not all young people feel like they belong in sport or movement spaces.

At Thriving in Motion, our kids are:
πŸ’› Building confidence
πŸ’› Learning new skills
πŸ’› Finding connection
πŸ’› Experiencing movement in a way that feels safe and supportive

Because when environments change, young people don’t just participate…
they thrive.

Our Story

Following an initial pilot program in 2010 including speciality sessions with CanTeen and kick start funding from ESSA, Thriving has grown to include year-round after-school programs in partnership with UWA, and specialised exercise programs including Thriving-DAYS (WA Drug and Alcohol Youth Services). Our team has grown to include a highly trained and enthusiastic crew, passionate around improving the health of kids and young people through exercise.

Our mission is to provide physical activity programs for children and young people to benefit their mental and physical health. We specialise in programs for those who experience difficulties participating at a community or school level due to medical, social or behavioural difficulties.

In order to achieve our mission we aim to:

  • Improve physical and mental health outcomes through evidence-based exercise programs for children and young people
