π¨ New research weβre proud to be part of
At Thriving in Motion, weβre committed to evidence-informed, inclusive care, which is why our collaboration with MHEX matters.
Our latest study exploring eating and exercise experiences in trans and gender diverse adults has just been accepted for publication - and the findings are important.
Across 158 participants:
β 37.3% reported a lifetime eating disorder diagnosis
β 32.3% are currently experiencing clinical-level symptoms
β 15.2% met criteria for compulsive exercise
β 88% identified as neurodivergent
What stood out most is how gender identity shapes relationships with food, movement, and the body sometimes directly (e.g., using exercise or restriction to affirm identity), and often through broader experiences like minority stress, anxiety, and body disconnection.
We also saw that:
β’ Binary-identifying trans individuals had higher odds of compulsive exercise
β’ Compulsive exercise was more often driven by guilt and self-worth β not enjoyment
β’ Structural barriers remain significant β from gendered spaces to safety concerns in gyms
This is exactly why inclusive, affirming, and adaptable exercise environments matter.
Because everyone deserves to move in ways that feel safe, supported, and empowering. ππ©·π€
