Phobias are often dismissed as “irrational fears,” but in reality, they’re learned patterns of threat, the brain’s way of overprotecting you.🧠

Over time, these responses become deeply wired, activating the same physiological fear circuits as real danger.

The good news is that phobias are highly treatable. Through structured, evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Therapy, psychologists help retrain the brain’s response to fear, gradually reducing avoidance and rebuilding a sense of safety and control.

Therapy doesn’t force you to face your fear all at once. It works gently and collaboratively, helping you understand the patterns that keep fear alive, and giving you practical tools to calm the body’s alarm system when it activates.

If you’ve been avoiding situations or experiences because of fear, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Change is possible with the right clinical support.

Immediate Clinical Psychology appointments are available with Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss across our Perth locations. Email hello@canopypsych.com.au or book your session online now.

Ever find your mind jumping straight to “worst case scenario” mode? That’s catastrophising, when a small worry snowballs into something much bigger.🧠🤯

It’s common, and it’s your brain trying to protect you, just not very helpfully.

The key is to pause and check in and ask yourself:
- What evidence do I have for this thought?
- What would I say to a friend thinking this way?
- What’s actually happening right now?

Evidence-based therapies like CBT and ACT can help you break the cycle and feel more grounded when thoughts spiral.

If this is something you’d like to work on, schedule a session with one of our Clinical Psychologists online now (link in bio).

Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) explained🧠

When we struggle with anxiety or low mood, it’s often not just the thoughts themselves that keep us stuck, it’s the way we respond to them.

Metacognitive Therapy focuses on those patterns. Instead of challenging the content of thoughts, MCT helps you change your relationship with them.

For example, worrying about worrying, or ruminating on “why am I like this?”, can trap us in cycles that feel endless.

MCT teaches skills to step out of those loops, shifting attention, loosening unhelpful thinking styles, and reducing the grip of worry and rumination.

👉Research shows it can be highly effective for anxiety, depression, and related conditions.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists, Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss, have a special interest in this evidence-based approach as well as many others.

🗓️Immediate appointments are available at our Nedlands and Murdoch locations.

Today is R U OK? Day.💬

We understand these conversations aren’t always easy. A vague “Are you ok?” can close things down, but a specific and genuine check-in can open the door. You might try:

“I’ve noticed you’ve seemed flat lately, how are you going?”

“That sounds tough. Do you want to talk more about it?”

“I’m grabbing coffee later, want to join me?”

“I might not get this right, but I wanted to check in.”

You don’t need to have all the answers. Listening is often the most valuable part. If the concerns feel bigger than what you can support, encouraging professional help is a meaningful next step.

🍃At Canopy, our clinical psychologists are here to provide that ongoing support across both our Nedlands and Murdoch locations as well as online via Telehealth.

Appointments are available with Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss. Email hello@canopypsych.com.au or book your session online now.

Father’s Day can stir a mix of emotions…

For some, it’s a day of love and celebration. For others, it’s a reminder of loss, of longing, or of relationships that never felt simple.

You might be missing a father who is no longer here, wishing to become a father yourself, navigating complicated family ties, or simply finding the day heavier than you expected.
All of these experiences are real, and all of them deserve gentleness.

At Canopy, we honour the many different ways days like Father’s Day can be felt.

If you find the feelings hard to hold, one helpful approach can be to give them a shape. That might mean writing down what the day brings up and setting it aside, or speaking it aloud to someone you trust.

Externalising what’s inside the mind can reduce its intensity and make things easier to process.

If you’d like some further support to explore these feelings or perhaps something else going on in your life, we’d love to hear from you.

There’s a version of coping that can look like you’ve got it all together.

However, high-functioning anxiety, perfectionism, and even high-functioning depression can all exist behind the appearance of “doing fine.”

On the outside, you’re managing. On the inside, it’s a different story, one of pressure, exhaustion, disconnection, and a nervous system that is in a constant state of fight or flight and even freeze-state.

When functioning becomes your coping mechanism, it can be hard to recognise what’s wrong, let alone acknowledge these feelings.

You might not feel like you’re “struggling enough” to ask for help. But therapy isn’t just for crisis. It’s also for the quiet kind of overwhelm that builds over time.

If you are feeling a sense of overwhelm, emotionally flat, low in mood, or struggling with your daily life tasks, we would love to help.

Immediate appointments are available with our Clinical Psychologists Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss at our Nedlands and Murdoch locations.

Healing isn’t linear.🍃

Even when you’re feeling grounded, self-aware, or “past it”, a trigger can still surprise you. Especially in moments of closeness, roles (like becoming a parent), or safe relationships that stir up old patterns.

Being triggered doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means your nervous system is asking for attention.

Therapy isn’t about erasing your triggers, it’s about creating space between the reaction and your response. It’s where curiosity replaces shame, and choice begins to return.

If something’s surfaced for you lately, we’re here. 🗓️Immediate appointments are available with our clinical psychologists, Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss.

This Birth Trauma Awareness Week, we’re turning the focus to something too often left out of perinatal conversations: Postnatal PTSD. 🍼

Birth is not always a joyful or empowering experience. For some, it’s traumatic. It can be both physical or psychological, or a combination of both.

Postnatal PTSD can affect women, birthing people, fathers and partners. And it doesn’t always look like what you’d expect.

You might be:
- Reliving parts of the birth unexpectedly
- Avoiding people, places or anything associated with the birth
- Feeling on edge or emotionally numb
- Struggling to bond with your baby
- Feeling shame that your experience doesn’t match what others describe

Worry has a way of hijacking your whole day, even when nothing’s actually happening right now.🧠

One evidence-based strategy we often share with clients is called “Postpone Worry”. ⏰It doesn’t mean ignore it or push it away. It means creating boundaries around it so it doesn’t take over everything else.

If your brain tends to spiral the moment things go quiet, this one’s worth trying.

Looking for some personalised support, immediate appointments are available with our clinical psychologists, Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss.
