Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a well-researched mental health condition that can develop following exposure to trauma. 🍃

It can happen when the nervous system remains in a heightened state long after a traumatic event has passed, which can in turn affect sleep, mood, relationships, and a person’s sense of safety in everyday life.

Psychological treatment for PTSD is evidence-based and carefully structured, with a strong focus on safety, stabilisation, and recovery. Many people experience meaningful improvement with the right support.

If you or someone you know might be struggling with this, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with your GP and request a referral to us. You can also book an appointment with us directly (no referral required). 🤍

Valentine’s Day can be a difficult time for many people.

Feelings of loneliness, grief, or disconnection often become more noticeable around holidays that emphasise relationships and togetherness.

👉From a clinical psychology perspective, these experiences are not a sign that something is “wrong”. They often reflect increased social comparison, unmet expectations, or reminders of past experiences. For some, this can affect mood, anxiety levels, or overall wellbeing.

🧠Psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy and compassion focused approaches can support people to understand these responses, reduce self criticism, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

If this time of year brings up things you’d like support with, our clinical psychologists are available to help.

If you’d like to schedule an appointment, you can book online via our website:

If you’ve ever caught yourself scrolling without meaning to, comparing your life to everyone else’s, or feeling flat after spending too much time on your phone, you’re not alone.📲🤳

🧠Our brains aren’t wired for constant stimulation, comparison, and notifications. Over time, this can leave us feeling drained, distracted, and more disconnected from ourselves than we realise.

This digital detox bingo isn’t about giving up your phone or doing everything at once. It’s simply a collection of small, realistic changes that can help reduce screen time, interrupt doom scrolling, and create more breathing space in your day.

👉Even one small shift can help improve mood, focus, sleep, and how present you feel. You don’t need to “play bingo” or complete the whole chart. Pick one square. Try it once. See how it feels.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists often support people to build healthier relationships with technology, especially when scrolling starts to affect self esteem, mood, or daily life.
Sometimes, the first step is just noticing and making one small change.

Clinical Psychology appointments are available across our Perth locations and online. Email hello@canopypsych.com.au or book your session online now.

Back to work blues can show up in subtle ways.📉🗄️

Low motivation. Heavy mornings. Short patience. A sense of dread you didn’t expect after time off. For many people, this isn’t about disliking their work, it’s their nervous system adjusting.

Here are a few small things that can genuinely help if you’re struggling with this:

• don’t expect full productivity straight away. Be kind to yourself as you ease back in
• anchor your day with one predictable routine
• break tasks into “start here” steps, not full to do lists
• get outside before or after work to reset your nervous system
• limit scrolling at night so your brain can properly wind down

If this feeling fades after a week or two, that’s normal. If it lingers, worsens, or starts to affect sleep or mood, it’s worth paying attention.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists work with people navigating work stress, burnout, anxiety, and low mood, helping them find practical ways to cope and regain balance.

If prioritising your mental health is one of the goals you’ve set for yourself heading into 2026, this is for you.

In this reel, Rosie shares what psychological resilience looks like in real life. It’s about how we cope, adapt, and move forward when things feel challenging.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists work with you one on one, supporting you through whatever you’re experiencing and helping you build practical tools that fit your life. Tools you can return to again and again as life shifts.

Resilience isn’t about having it all together. It’s about learning how to support yourself through change, stress, and uncertainty, and that’s something we can build together.

Holiday stress builds fast when your brain is overloaded. 🧠

From a clinical perspective, high cognitive load reduces your executive functioning, making decisions harder and increasing stress.

These small adjustments, pictured, will help you work smarter, not harder, so you can move through the season without pushing past your limit.

Need some extra support? Clinical Psychology appointments are available across our Perth locations and online. Email hello@canopypsych.com.au or book your session online now.

The end of the year brings up very different things for different people.

For some it’s burnout after holding everything together all year. For others it’s the pressure to make the holidays “perfect,” the social overload, the discomfort of old family dynamics, or the loneliness that feels louder when the rest of the world looks connected.

If any of that is landing for you, a helpful place to start is simply noticing what your system is finding hard, not what you think you “should” be coping with.

Once you name it, it becomes much easier to make choices that protect your energy: scaling things back, asking for help, saying no, creating space, or reaching out if you’re feeling isolated.

There’s no one right way to move through this season, just the way that feels manageable for you, and that’s enough.

Recurring nightmares can be distressing, and are often linked to stress, trauma, or disrupted sleep patterns.💤🥱

While they may feel uncontrollable, research shows they can be effectively treated through Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT).

IRT works by helping you recall the nightmare while awake, re-imagining it with a different, non-threatening ending, and mentally rehearsing the new version.

Over time, this retrains the brain’s response to distressing dreams, reducing their intensity and frequency.

It’s a gentle, evidence-based approach often used in treating trauma-related sleep disturbance and PTSD.

If you do experience nightmares, immediate appointments are available with our Clinical Psychologists, Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss, at our Nedlands and Murdoch locations.

Phobias are often dismissed as “irrational fears,” but in reality, they’re learned patterns of threat, the brain’s way of overprotecting you.🧠

Over time, these responses become deeply wired, activating the same physiological fear circuits as real danger.

The good news is that phobias are highly treatable. Through structured, evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Therapy, psychologists help retrain the brain’s response to fear, gradually reducing avoidance and rebuilding a sense of safety and control.

Therapy doesn’t force you to face your fear all at once. It works gently and collaboratively, helping you understand the patterns that keep fear alive, and giving you practical tools to calm the body’s alarm system when it activates.

If you’ve been avoiding situations or experiences because of fear, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Change is possible with the right clinical support.

Immediate Clinical Psychology appointments are available with Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss across our Perth locations. Email hello@canopypsych.com.au or book your session online now.
