Back in 2012, Sarah took on her first Remote Area Nurse role as what she describes as “green but keen" agency nurse working in the Northern Territory.
The learning curve was steep. There were moments she wanted to pack up and go home — and even a few nurses who questioned why she was there.
“Aren’t you a bit young for this?”
“What experience do you even have?”
It’s a reminder that sometimes, nurses can be the harshest on their own. We often “eat our young,” when what we should be doing is lifting them up.
With the nursing workforce aging and demand for Remote Area Nurses growing, we can’t afford to shut people out simply because they’re new. What we can do is make sure they’re properly supported, mentored, and placed safely.
