I think it’s fair to say that we all would love our children to excel at reading. However, like any skill, there will be some children who seem to fly along with their reading skills and others who find it a struggle. Whichever way it is for your child, there are some things you can do to give your child the ‘edge’:

📚 read with your child on a daily basis - and several times per day if your child is keen

📚 model reading - lead by example, to show your child that reading is fun, relaxing, enjoyable

📚 choose/help your child choose books they find interesting and fun

📚 praise their reading efforts - the behaviours that we reward with positive attention are the behaviours likely to increase

📚 ensure the book is not too difficult for your child to decode (read). If they have to sound out all the words and struggle through every sentence, it’s too hard. We want success, as success breeds success!

What’s your fav strategy to give your child the reading edge?

If you want to hook your kids on reading, here are a few of my ideas:

👶🏻 start young - introduce books during infancy - you might like to start with cloth books, bath books and board books such as

🖼️ next come picture books - often have fun rhyming text, some repetitive text for children to join in with, appealing images. I’ll throw my hat in the ring and suggest I’d Rather Eat Chocolate

💥 you could then progress to comics, graphic novels, short chapter books. Now we’re starting to see more independent reading and the hook is happening!

📚 finally, find a series that your child just hangs out for the next book! My first son absolutely loved Emily Rodda’s Deltora Quest. 25 years later, he still remembers how we’d scour bookshops for the next release. Hook, line and sinker. Job done 🎉

What are your favourite ways/books to hook your child on reading?

Ok… so we might soon be living off the 5 pumpkins I’ve recently grown but this also reminded me how much fun I used to have grocery shopping with my kids. In the same aisle (so I could keep my 👀 on them), they would have a basket and run off to get a few items I requested. Great for short term verbal memory and an excellent functional reading task - reading labels and shelf tickets is a great way to show your children how valuable reading is in the real world.

Other functional reading ideas include environmental signs/road signs, instructions on toy packaging, directions for use (eg toothpaste). What other tips have you got for functional reading?

I’d Rather Eat Chocolate is written with rhyme, rhythm and repetitive text to help children fall in love with reading and build confidence in their skills.

Here’s Miss 3 reading her book. Isn’t she adorable? Thankyou for sharing this video with me. Makes my heart sing listening to a little reader developing her skills.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I rarely ask for help and this won’t cost you a cent.

Here we go - I’m hoping you will all check out your local library catalogue and if they don’t hold copies of I’d Rather Eat Chocolate, would you kindly ask that they order in a copy?

This would help me enormously. Libraries can buy my book from any of their preferred library suppliers.

Thank you!

Looking for a chocolate alternative for Easter?

I have the perfect gift idea - a children’s picture book called I’d Rather Eat Chocolate. Perfect for children aged 2-8 years but I find adults buy it for anyone with a sneaky little chocolate addiction no matter what age!

And watch to the end to see the cute cookies - one complimentary cookie per book purchased via my website. Cookies are made by local Perth business - yum!

Hop to it and purchase before 26th March for Easter delivery 🐣🐰

With rhyming stories being a popular choice for young children, I hope that Australian publishers might support this trend.

So far this year I have submitted to 3 publishers even though one of those said they prefer no rhyming manuscripts 😱. Thought I’d give it a go anyway!! Another one seemed pretty clear they don’t accept rhyming stories so I didn’t even try.

I totally understand that publishing picture books is a tough and competitive industry and that rhyming stories don’t translate well into other languages and thereby limit the publisher’s market. However rhyming stories provide so many benefits for children’s literacy skills so I can only hope that enough publishers continue to support rhyme.

Wouldn’t it be great if government funding could subsidise costs for publishers of rhyming picture books, given Australia’s reduction in children’s reading rates. Ahhh… I can only dream

It’s a good thing us children’s book authors have a passion for what we do because it’s a whole lot of effort for a small financial return!

My legs and feet are knackered after two long days of standing but I absolutely loved meeting and connecting with so many gorgeous people and discussing literacy, signing books, and inspiring children to have fun reading.

I rarely do a market that costs more than $50 so I was going out on a limb for this one. My husband thought I was mad. But if I can recoup my stall fee, everything after that is a bonus.

Thanks for having me . The weather was beautiful and the vibe was very festive. And thanks to every single person who dropped by my stall - I appreciate your support 💕
