Did you know that modelling reading is a key factor in your child learning to read for enjoyment?

As we enter our summer holidays (or winter if we turn the world upside down!) routines often fly out the window.

But if there was one activity to prioritise or even increase during holidays, book reading is top of my list. Not just reading with your child(ren) but also reading for your own enjoyment and relaxation.

When we read for enjoyment, there are so many benefits, including improved mental health, stronger academic performance, richer vocabulary.

So let’s read, read, read and grow our minds, nurture our mental health, and allow ourselves to relax. You have my complete permission to bury your nose in a book (or two or three)

How does your child learn?

Children often have a preference for a particular learning style - eg auditory, visual, kinesthetic.

If you’re not sure how to identify your child’s learning style, that’s ok - they will often use all three and over time develop a preference for one or two. So go ahead and use all the learning styles with your little one.

Here are a few tips on identifying learning styles:

Auditory learners will often talk through everything - I have one of those - he could just about talk under water in swimming lessons! He’s now an Occupational Therapist and his clients love how easy it is to talk with him. He literally talks.all.the.time. I think he also knows the words to every song written on the planet.

Visual learners - I have one of these too - so observant that by the age of 2 years he was identifying different makes of cars by their hubcaps (which we had back in the day!) He’s now a graphic designer/marketing and branding expert (he designed my new logo and business card- clever young man!)

Kinesthetic learners - are active learners and like to feel, do and experience - I have two of those - one who loved to create and construct complex lego designs (he’s now an Engineer) and one who loved to be outside and exploring his environment and taking risks (yikes!) I’ll let you guess what he does now.

Do you have a little learner with a favourite style??

When I wrote I’d Rather Eat Chocolate, I naively thought children’s books sell 1000s of copies. Well of course, I’m no Mem Fox or Pamela Allen nor am I a celebrity… so turns out my book had a very small market😩😳

Needless to say, I believed in I’d Rather Eat Chocolate. It’s so beautifully illustrated by , is written with rhyme and rhythm and some repetitive text to help emerging readers build their confidence, is a whole lotta fun to read, has a great message around healthy eating, is professionally produced by .

I have slogged my little heart out and I absolutely have loved all my incursions, library workshops, school author events and many markets. I’ve met amazing people, and most of all, my heart sings when I hear about a child enjoying my book or even eating a new vegetable.

So onwards and upwards in 2026 and thank you to everyone who has supported me 💕

I’ve been at quite a few markets over the past month so thought I’d create a free competition for people to enter when they popped over to say ‘hi’ or bought a copy of I’d Rather Eat Chocolate, because Christmas time is all about giving and I just wanted to make someone’s day 😊🎄

The gift included:
🥕hardcover copy of I’d Rather Eat Chocolate
🥕apron, chef hat and measuring spoons from .mates
🥕carrot pencil case for a bit of fun
🥕unique printed veggie tote bag

When I rang Misty to let her know she was the winner, she was pretty stoked and said she hadn’t won a competition in ages. And as it happened, she had just been reading I’d Rather Eat Chocolate to her daughter!!

Hope my package arrives before Christmas as an extra surprise for Misty’s 3 year old daughter 💕

Rhyming helps build awareness of the sounds in words (phonological awareness) and is one of the skills necessary for successful reading.

Here are a few tips for assisting your child to rhyme:

🤗Read and sing nursery rhymes with your child from a young age - the good ol’ fashioned nursery rhymes need to make a come back!!

🤗Point out some rhyming words in books as you read them

🤗Encourage your child to finish off the sentence with the rhyming word in familiar books (eg ‘I don’t like veggies’ I say with a sigh, ‘I’d rather eat chocolate, a cake, or french-…)

🤗Encourage your child to create their own rhyming words (they will often start with nonsense words - lots of fun to be had!)

🤗Praise your child’s rhyming attempts

What’s your child’s favourite rhyming book at the moment?

Read books together!

Honestly, it’s one of the best ways to prepare your child for school:

✏️ builds attention span
✏️ develops vocabulary and language
✏️ builds sound-letter associations
✏️ extends knowledge base
✏️ stimulates conversation

Plus you can read books on the topic of starting school to explore your child’s feelings towards the big day. Here are a few Aussie books to get you started.

Oliver’s First Day of School by Jessica Ten Vaanholt .bookshelf

100 School Days by Deborah Frenkel and Laura Stitzel

Going to Big School by Laura Sieveking and Danielle McDonald

What are your favourite school prep stories to add to this list?

Author life has certainly kept me on my toes.
I’ve embarked on a steep learning curve over the last two years and there have been many stressful moments where I’ve reached for the chocolate.

Can anyone else relate to my experiences???
