Why storytelling matters for kids 🧠💬

Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways children build language, confidence, and thinking skills.

Whether they’re describing a picture, retelling a favourite movie, or talking about their day — they’re practising:

✨ Vocabulary
✨ Sequencing
✨ Clear sentences
✨ Social understanding
✨ Early literacy

If your child struggles to retell events, stay on topic, or explain their ideas, we can help.
Our speech pathology sessions use fun, evidence-based strategies to make storytelling easier and more enjoyable.

🧠 Echolalia in Autistic Children: What It Really Means

If your child repeats lines from TV shows, YouTube, or things you’ve just said, you’re not alone.
This repetition is called echolalia — and although it can sound unusual, it’s actually a meaningful part of communication for many autistic children.

Here’s what every parent should know 👇

✨ What Is Echolalia?

Echolalia simply means repeating words or phrases spoken by someone else.
It might sound like:

🔁 Repeating your question
“Do you want juice?” → “Do you want juice?”

🎬 Quoting a favourite show
“To infinity and beyond!”

⏰ Repeating phrases later in the day
“Time to go! Time to go!”

Two common types:
• Immediate echolalia — happens right after hearing something
• Delayed echolalia — happens hours, days, or weeks later

💬 Why Does Echolalia Happen?

Echolalia isn’t “just copying.”
For many autistic children, it’s a powerful way to:

• communicate a need
• process language
• buy time to think
• self-regulate
• join in socially
• practise language patterns

In many cases, echolalia is a bridge toward more flexible, self-generated speech.

🔍 What Speech Pathologists Look For

When we hear echolalia, we ask:

• What is the child repeating?
• When do they use it?
• What function does it serve?
• Are they starting to change small parts of the phrase?

These clues help us see where the child is in their language journey and how to support them best.

🗣 How Speech Pathologists Support Echolalia

A neurodiversity-affirming speech pathologist does not try to stop echolalia.
Instead, we use it to build meaningful communication.

Therapy may include:

✨ Modelling functional language
“Do you want juice?” → “I want juice, please.”

✨ Building comprehension
Helping the child understand what their favourite phrases mean.

✨ Expanding on scripts
Adding or changing one small word at a time.

✨ Visual supports & routines
Linking scripts to actions, pictures, and real-life experiences.

✨ Family collaboration
Showing parents how to respond in positive, supportive ways.

🏡 How You Can Support Your Child at Home

You can help by:

💛 Responding with interest, not correction
Child: “Time to go!”
Adult: “You’re right — it is time to get ready.”

💛 Modelling simple, clear phrases
Give them the words they’re trying to communicate.

💛 Using their favourite quotes as connection
Scripts can be a doorway into interaction.

💛 Allowing extra processing time
A short pause goes a long way.

Even scripted language is communication.
Your child is showing you what feels meaningful and safe.

💡 Final Thoughts

Echolalia is a valid and purposeful way for autistic children to communicate.
It shows they’re listening, learning, and trying to connect in a way that makes sense to their brain.

With understanding, support, and speech therapy, scripts can grow into flexible, confident communication — helping your child express their thoughts, needs, and personality in their own unique way.

📘Does Your Child Have Autism?
FAQ — Neurodiversity-Affirming Language
❓ What does “neurodiversity-affirming” mean?

It means recognising that every brain thinks and learns differently — and those differences are valid.

❓ Is this approach only for autistic or ADHD children?

No. It supports all neurodivergent profiles, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, PDA, and more.

❓ Does this approach try to “fix” my child’s behaviours?

No. The goal is support, not “normalising.” We focus on communication, safety, and confidence.

❓ Do you force eye contact?

No. We never force behaviours that feel uncomfortable or unnatural for the child.

❓ Is echolalia supported?

Yes — it’s a valid communication tool. We build meaning from scripts rather than trying to stop them.

❓ What communication methods do you use?

Whatever works best for the child: speech, AAC, gestures, key word sign, typing, drawing, or scripts.

❓ Do you consider sensory needs?

Absolutely. Movement breaks, quiet spaces, fidgets, and predictable routines are part of therapy.

❓ Will this help my child feel more confident?

Yes. The aim is to build self-esteem, self-advocacy, and self-understanding — not masking.

❓ Do parents have input in goals?

Always. We work with families to create goals that match your child’s real-world needs.

No. Play-based practice works best.

❓ What if my child doesn’t want to practise?
Follow their lead and build the goal into something they love.

❓ Can I use daily routines?
Yes! Bath time, mealtime, stories — all great for practice.

❓ How do I know what to work on?
Ask your speech pathologist for one small goal each week.

❓ Will missing a day ruin progress?
No. Consistency over time matters more than perfection.

❓ Is 20 minutes enough?

Reading & Comprehension

📚 Does your child read the words… but not understand the story?
This is more common than parents realise.

Many children can decode well but struggle with comprehension — especially with vocabulary, sentence structure, inferencing, or remembering details. The good news? These are skills that can be improved with the right support.

At Perth Speech Therapy, we help children build the language foundations needed for strong comprehension, including:
🔤 Phonological awareness
🧠 Vocabulary & grammar
📖 Narrative skills
🔍 Main idea & inferencing
💬 Critical thinking

When these skills strengthen, reading finally starts to “make sense.”

💡 Quick tips to try at home:
• Read together and chat about the story
• Ask open-ended questions (“Why do you think…?”)
• Connect the book to your child’s experiences
• Talk about new words as you find them

If your child can read but struggles to understand, we’re here to help.
