Silkwood Funerals feel deeply privileged to have had the opportunity to care for Stan Taylor fondly known by many as “The Bee Man” of the Swan Valley and his family during this profound time. 🐝

Stan Taylor was more than just a beekeeper. Having migrated to Western Australia in 1950, he devoted over six decades to the craft of bees and beekeeping, cultivating a rich legacy of knowledge and mentorship. His passion for apiculture inspired countless young people to discover the art and importance of beekeeping.

As the author of Stan’s Bee 🐝 Book and a long-standing member of the Western Australian beekeeping community, Stan shared his wisdom generously through talks, mentoring, and his warm, humble nature. He leaves behind an incredible contribution to the bee world, to our environment, and to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

A few years ago, we had the honour of conducting the funeral for Stan’s beloved wife, and it has been a privilege to once again support the Taylor family with care and respect.

To his family, friends, and the entire beekeeping community—we extend our heartfelt condolences. Stan’s hive will forever remain full, his memory ever sweet, and his legacy everlasting.

A special thank you to Amanda Rowe a beautiful Celebrant who walked alongside Silkwood and the family. 🐝🌿🐝

What an honour it was today for us at Silkwood Funerals to stand within the Hale School Chapel — an important and deeply symbolic structure at the heart of the school — to farewell Mr Derek Chadwick, a much-loved teacher, mentor, and coach whose influence has spanned generations.

Hale School has shared the sad news of Derek’s passing on 22 October 2025. Derek devoted more than 40 years of exceptional service to the school as Sportsmaster (1974–1995) and 1st XI Cricket Coach (1985–2006), inspiring countless Hale boys through his leadership, mentorship and passion for sport. His legacy lives on in the Chadwick Pavilion, dedicated in his honour in 2021, and in the many lives he shaped along the way.

As we stood within the chapel — surrounded by the history, tradition and spirit of Hale — we were reminded that this is more than just a place of learning; it is a place where character, respect, and lifelong memories are formed. Established in 1858 and relocated to Wembley Downs in 1961, Hale School remains one of Western Australia’s most respected independent boys’ schools, built on values of integrity, service and excellence.

Today’s farewell was not only a moment of reflection but a celebration of a life so clearly dedicated to those very principles. Derek Chadwick’s presence, both on and off the field, will continue to echo through the halls, the classrooms, and the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Derek’s family, his friends, and the entire Hale community. His influence will forever remain a treasured part of the school’s story.

🌧️ A Quiet Moment at Karrakatta 🌧️

This morning, while I stood at Karrakatta prior to a service, I paused and looked out across the cemetery as the clouds darkened and the rain began to fall. In that gentle hush I was reminded of why I do what I do — to stand with families in their most tender moments, to carry their stories and honour their loved ones with care, dignity and compassion.

Karrakatta is more than a place of rest — it is a place of legacy. It holds the memories of many who shaped our state and nation in different ways. Here are ten people resting there whose lives remind us of that:
1. Edith Cowan (1861-1932) – A remarkable social reformer and women’s advocate, Edith became the first woman elected to an Australian parliament (in Western Australia, 1921).
2. John Curtin (1885-1945) – Prime Minister of Australia during much of World War II.
3. Heath Ledger (1979-2008) – An internationally acclaimed actor from Perth whose legacy still resonates in film, and who is memorialised at Karrakatta.
4. Sir Paul Hasluck (1905-1993) – Governor-General of Australia and a prominent politician and author.
5. Sir John Forrest (1847-1918) – Western Australia’s first Premier and a significant explorer and public figure in WA’s early years.
6. Sir Francis Burt (1918-2004) – A leading jurist: Chief Justice of WA and later Governor of WA.
7. May Holman (1893-1939) – The first woman to represent the Labor Party in an Australian legislature, and a pioneer for women in politics.
8. Joseph Furphy (1843-1912) – Celebrated Australian author (“Tom Collins”) whose work contributed to the cultural life of the nation.
9. Martin O’Meara (1885-1935) – A recipient of the Victoria Cross for his bravery in World War I, one of many war heroes resting at Karrakatta.
10. Thomas Axford (1894-1983) – Also a Victoria Cross recipient; his grave is among the many that reflect military service and sacrifice.

Each of these people had different paths — politics, social reform, arts, war service — yet they all share this place of rest in one of Western Australia’s most historic cemeteries. It reminds me that every life has meaning and story.

At Silkwood Funerals, it remains our privilege to walk alongside families, to honour those stories, and to ensure that legacies are carried on with as much respect and thoughtfulness as they deserve. 💛

After a lovely weekend in Melbourne at the ACC Higgins Funeral Directors Expo, connecting with fellow professionals from across Australia, I’ve returned feeling inspired and proud of the care and compassion that defines our industry.

As Managing Director of Silkwood Funerals, I’m reminded how important it is to continually learn, share, and grow all so we can better serve the families who place their trust in us.

It was straight back into it yesterday, with our beautiful fleet lined up in readiness to honour another much-loved life. It is always an honour for my team and me to walk alongside Western Australian families, delivering the highest level of service, care and respect.💛
