📖 Book sharing strategies 📖

Reading with your child is one of the most powerful ways to build their language, attention and early literacy skills.

Our Speech Pathologists Michelle and Abbey share some of their favourite book-sharing tips 👇
✨ Talk about the pictures together
✨ Connect the story to real-life experiences
✨ Point to the words to build print awareness
✨ Use actions and expression
✨ Follow your child’s lead — skipping pages or re-reading is okay!

At Next Challenge, we love using books to make language learning fun, interactive and meaningful 💬💜

🚽✨ Toileting is a big milestone — and every child reaches it in their own time

At Next Challenge, we believe in a gentle, child-led approach to toilet training. That means:

🌈 Following each child’s cues
🙌 Building confidence and comfort
👖 Practising step-by-step routines
💬 Supporting communication — in all forms (gestures, AAC, visuals, words!)
🧸 Making it positive and pressure free

Our Occupational Therapists are highly skilled in supporting children with toileting. If you would like guidance or support, our team is here to help 💜

🗣️ Ask less, comment more!

It can be easy to ask lots of questions when communicating with children, but asking too many questions can sometimes put too much pressure on them to respond. Instead, try offering more comments than questions 💬

Commenting gives children exposure to language to hear, process and eventually use themselves, without the expectation to answer each time ✨

For every question, try to make 3-4 comments 🙌🏼
For example, during car play:
💬 “You’re driving the blue car”
💬 “It’s going so fast!”
💬 “Crash! It hit the wall”
💬 “Uh oh, it rolled over!”
❓ “Where should the car go next?”

This simple shift in communication models language, builds confidence and helps communication feel natural and fun 🌈

✨ At Next Challenge, child-led therapy is at the centre of everything we do ✨

Child-led therapy involves following a child’s interests, ideas, and motivations to guide each session. When therapy starts with what’s meaningful to them, learning feels natural, confidence grows, and real connection happens 💜

🌈 Sharing some of our favourite neurodiversity-affirming books! 📚💭

Stories like My Brain is a Racecar, The Brain Forest, My Wandering Dreaming Mind and Some Brains remind us that every child’s brain works in its own amazing way — and that’s something to celebrate! 🧠✨

Reading these stories together can help parents and children build understanding, confidence, and pride in their unique strengths. They’re a wonderful way to start meaningful conversations and nurture self-esteem — one page at a time 💜

✨📝 Who said learning grammar can’t be fun!

Our Speech Pathologist Hannah recently used this magnet scene to teach coordinating and subordinating conjunctions in a hands-on and engaging way ⭐️

Activities like this help children to build longer and more complex sentences - turning a fun, play-based activity into powerful language learning 📝
