Happy St Patrick’s Day ☘️
A quiet one this year, from Adelaide…
It’s funny how being Irish isn’t just where you’re from, it’s something you carry with you.
In how you connect, in how you feel things, in how you remember.
Today feels soft. A little reflective. A little proud.
Maybe it’s the Irish in me. ☘️

The Body Is Always Communicating.

It is something I have noticed again and again over the years.

People often override the small signals their body sends. Not intentionally. Just quietly, through the pace of life.

Low energy
Poor sleep
Digestive discomfort
Temperature changes
Slow recovery

None of these things appear suddenly.

They begin as signals.

And yet most of us learn to ignore them until eventually they become symptoms.

The longer I work in this space, the more I realise that real health begins much earlier than most people think.

It begins the moment we start paying attention.

Cooler evenings… finally.

Do you ever notice how your body seems to relax the moment the air cools?

I’ve always noticed something about myself.
I seem to come alive when the temperature drops.

Warm summer nights are beautiful, but my body has always preferred the crispness of cooler air. Better sleep. Clearer thinking. A quieter nervous system.

Lately I’ve been wondering how much of that might be written into our biology.

For most of human history, our ancestors adapted to the environments they lived in for thousands of years. Northern European populations, for example, developed metabolic traits that helped regulate heat production and energy use in colder climates. Subtle shifts in brown fat activity, mitochondrial efficiency, and thyroid signalling helped the body manage temperature and energy.

In other words, our genes remember the climates our ancestors lived in.

It’s something I often see reflected in the genetic and functional testing work I do, the body carries quiet clues about the environments it was designed to thrive in.

One of the things I enjoy about wearing my Oura ring is watching how the body responds to subtle changes, temperature, sleep quality, recovery. Sometimes the data simply confirms what the body already knows.

For me, cooler evenings feel like a small biological homecoming.

Perhaps it’s the Irish in me.

For a long time I thought nutrition was simply about food.

What to eat, what to avoid, what the latest research suggested.

But over time, working with genetics, functional testing and the subtle patterns inside the body, I began to see something deeper.

The body is not broken, it is communicating.

Digestion shifts when hormones change. Energy moves differently as we age. Foods that once felt effortless sometimes begin asking more of the body.

Part of that curiosity also came from living with Gilbert’s syndrome, a small genetic difference that quietly influences how my body processes certain foods and nutrients.

It was a gentle reminder that the body is rarely random. There is almost always a reason beneath the surface.

At some point I made a quiet decision. Almost a personal moratorium on forcing the body.

No more pushing harder.
No more overriding signals in the pursuit of optimisation.

Instead I became interested in understanding the language of the body.

Through personalised nutrition, genetics and functional testing I help people see those signals more clearly and respond with precision rather than force.

Because longevity is not about chasing perfection.

It is about learning to live gently and intelligently within the body you have.

Living gently inside a changing body!

Food Signalling Pathways

Lately I’ve been reflecting on how differently I see food now compared with when I first trained in nutrition.

Back then the conversation was mostly about nutrients, calories, what to increase and what to avoid.

Over time, working with people’s health and watching how the body responds, my perspective has shifted.

Food is not simply fuel.

It is information.

Every meal sends signals through the body that influence hormones, metabolism, the microbiome and even how our genes express themselves.

Which is why two people can eat exactly the same meal and have completely different experiences afterwards.

One person feels energised.

Another feels bloated or heavy.

The body is always responding to the signals we send it.

When I think about nutrition now, it feels less about perfect eating and more about learning to understand those signals.

Not perfection.

Just gently sending better messages to the body over time.

First night data.

Three days in Brisbane talking health science.

Tonight in my hotel room I opened something small.

A ring designed to quietly track sleep, recovery
and the physiological signals we rarely pause long enough to notice.

No screens, no notifications, just subtle signals.

Wearables provide data. Interpretation provides wisdom.

What interests me most is not perfection but patterns.

Brisbane, just before everything begins.

Three days of conversation, science, and long hours ahead.

The quiet before the pace.

I sized my Oura ring tonight, it arrives at the hotel tomorrow. Perhaps not the ideal moment to begin tracking travel, disrupted sleep, full conference days.

But maybe that’s the most honest place to start.

Data isn’t meant to capture perfection. It captures real life.

And real life rarely waits for optimal conditions.

There is so much information about health now. And yet, so little clarity.

Nutrition doesn’t fail because the science is wrong. It fails when it forgets something basic.

We don’t bond with meal plans, we bond with people.

You can download a protocol, order your own tests, follow someone else’s supplement routine. But healing doesn’t happen because of a spreadsheet.

It happens when someone helps you make sense of your body.

Data matters, but interpretation matters more.

In a world full of information, relationship is what creates change.

I don’t sell plans, I build context.

Because your body is not generic, and neither is your becoming.

If this resonates, you’re not alone.

Perth sun is generous, it is also uncompromising.

Ultraviolet exposure accelerates oxidative stress,
degrades collagen fibres, and weakens barrier integrity.

In midlife, when oestrogen shifts and collagen decline intensifies, protection becomes strategy.

SPF on the skin, UV filtration on car windows.
Occasional clinical support when needed.
Nutritional support for collagen synthesis.

Not indulgence, Not vanity, Just intelligent care.

Living gently inside a changing body includes the skin.

The long game.

Collagen Over Coffee

I never drank coffee, not really. My body is allergic to caffeine.

For years I didn’t replace it with anything.
I just started my mornings differently, quieter, while everyone else lined up for caffeine.

Living in a changing body has made me pay closer attention to what actually helps, not what stimulates, not what pushes.

So most mornings now, I drink collagen.
For my joints, my skin, the connective tissue that keeps everything moving as it should.

It doesn’t feel like a supplement, it feels more like upkeep, something steady, supportive.

A small ritual, nothing dramatic.

Just listening.

Living gently inside a changing body.

Calmer mornings in Adelaide.
Never truly alone once I have my Kindle Scribe as a companion.

Maybe you know this feeling too. Wanting quiet more than conversation. A table for one that feels full.

There’s comfort in starting the day gently before the world asks anything of you.

Calm isn’t isolation. It’s being with yourself, without rushing away.
