Hair Tissue Analysis by Labwest

Hair tissue analysis is a screening test that measures the mineral content of your hair. Labwest is a locally-owned boutique laboratory in Perth.

LabWest Minerals Analysis was established in January 2009, by a group of highly experienced analytical chemistry professionals to offer expert, boutique analysis services to individuals and professionals in Australia. The facility is situated in Malaga, in Perth’s north, and attained NATA accreditation for multi-elemental minerals analysis for the exploration sector in 2011, attesting to the high standard of work performed. LabWest is a leader in the application of microwave digestion technology to trace metals analysis, and has continuously developed the technique over the past 7 years. Interfacing microwave technology with inductively- coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and mass spectrometry gives excellent recovery with sensitive detection limits in trace element determinations.

LabWest was involved in the mineral analysis of the archeological hair samples in this project.
The results are fascinating. This was part of a research project conducted by Notre Dame graduate, Lauren Jolliffe.

At LabWest we take your hair sample and weigh a portion, then digest the sample with acids (reaction in a sealed test tube)
Doing this brings the elements of interest from your hair; such as, calcium, magnesium, mercury, arsenic, lead etc (we can analyse for around 70 elements) into the acidic solution.
We then dilute this solution with ultra pure water and finally insert into one of our specialised pieces of equipment.
The final report generated is in a format that naturopaths are familiar with and may easily be interpreted by them.
