What’s happening in the body and mind
Anxiety keeps the body in “fight-or-flight” mode → fast heart rate, tight chest, shortness of breath, shaking, sweating, dizziness, trouble sleeping.
Depression affects brain chemicals linked to mood, motivation, sleep, and appetite → low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, poor concentration, negative thoughts, physical pain.
When anxiety and depression last a long time, they can drain energy, affect work or school, strain relationships, and make everyday decisions feel overwhelming.
Important to know
These symptoms are not your fault
They are treatable
Many people experience both anxiety and depression at the same time
Things that often help (not cures, but supports)
Talking to a mental health professional (doctor, therapist, counsellor)
Regular sleep and gentle daily routines
Reducing alcohol or drug use (they often worsen symptoms long-term)
Small steps: short walks, light activity, simple tasks
Talking to one trusted person instead of keeping it inside
