💥 What Are Low Back Disc Injuries?
Your spine is made up of vertebrae cushioned by small discs that act like shock absorbers, provide stability and flexibility in the spine. When one of these discs becomes injured or irritated, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and even nerve symptoms like tingling, weakness, burning and/or numbness in the legs and feet.
There are a few types:
• Disc Bulge: The outer layer of the disc pushes out but remains intact.
• Disc Herniation: The inner gel-like material leaks out and may press on nearby nerves, which can lead to neurological symptoms.
• Disc Protrusion: A more advanced form of herniation where a larger amount of the inner disc material pushes into the spinal canal or a nerve space.
• Disc Sequestration: The most severe type, where a piece of the disc's inner material breaks off completely and may float within the spinal canal. This often requires surgery.
• Degenerative Disc Disease: The disc loses hydration and height over time, reducing its ability to work effectively.
🌀 Causes can include:
• Repetitive lifting or twisting actions
• Poor lifting mechanics
• Sudden trauma (like a fall or car accident)
• Age-related wear and tear
