At-Home Tips for Disc Injury Relief

If you’re dealing with a disc injury, the right movements can help reduce discomfort and support healing β€” while the wrong ones can make things worse.

Here are some simple, safe steps you can try:
πŸ§˜β€β™‚οΈ Gentle movement: Avoid prolonged sitting. Short walks or light mobility work keep blood flowing and prevent stiffness.
πŸ’ͺ McKenzie extensions: Lying face down, gently press up through your hands to extend the spine (stop if painful).
πŸͺ‘ Posture check: Keep your lower back supported when sitting β€” use a small rolled towel behind your lumbar spine.
🧊 Ice and heat: Ice in the first few days for inflammation; gentle heat later to relax tight muscles.
⚠️ Always listen to your body β€” if symptoms worsen or you feel sharp pain, stop and seek professional care.

Small, consistent steps can make a huge difference in your recovery!
What helps your back feel better β€” movement, stretching, or rest?

How Chiropractic Care Helps Disc Injuries

When it comes to low back disc issues, chiropractic care focuses on reducing pressure, restoring movement, and supporting healing β€” without relying on medication or surgery.

Here’s how we can help:
βœ… Gentle spinal adjustments to improve motion and reduce nerve irritation.
βœ… Postural retraining to take stress off the injured disc.
βœ… Soft tissue therapy and dry needling to release tight tissue, decrease pain and improve circulation and mobility.
βœ… Rehabilitation exercises to strengthen your surrounding musculature to prevent a future injury from occurring.

Our goal is to restore balance and function, helping you move comfortably again.
If you’ve been struggling with ongoing back pain or sciatica, a chiropractic assessment could be the next step toward relief.

Call us on 9418 6233 to find out if this approach is right for you.

πŸ’₯ What Are Low Back Disc Injuries?

Your spine is made up of vertebrae cushioned by small discs that act like shock absorbers, provide stability and flexibility in the spine. When one of these discs becomes injured or irritated, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and even nerve symptoms like tingling, weakness, burning and/or numbness in the legs and feet.

There are a few types:
β€’ Disc Bulge: The outer layer of the disc pushes out but remains intact.
β€’ Disc Herniation: The inner gel-like material leaks out and may press on nearby nerves, which can lead to neurological symptoms.
β€’ Disc Protrusion: A more advanced form of herniation where a larger amount of the inner disc material pushes into the spinal canal or a nerve space.
β€’ Disc Sequestration: The most severe type, where a piece of the disc's inner material breaks off completely and may float within the spinal canal. This often requires surgery.
β€’ Degenerative Disc Disease: The disc loses hydration and height over time, reducing its ability to work effectively.

πŸŒ€ Causes can include:
β€’ Repetitive lifting or twisting actions
β€’ Poor lifting mechanics
β€’ Sudden trauma (like a fall or car accident)
β€’ Age-related wear and tear

πŸ‘‰ Understanding the type and cause of a disc injury is the first step toward recovery.
Have you ever experienced back pain that radiated down your leg? That could be a sign your discs need some attention.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) – what are they?
A range of inflammatory and degenerative conditions affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, peripheral nerves and supporting blood vessels, WMSDs may be caused by a single workspace event, but commonly result from repeated harmful workspace activities over an extended period of time.

WorkSpace Week aims to reduce the occurrence and impact of WMSDs caused by physical stress, mental stress, repetitive work and poorly set up non-ergonomic workspaces. Chronic neck and back pain, shoulder stiffness and headaches can be linked to modifiable risk factors in Australian workplaces.

This WorkSpace Week (20-26 Oct), adjust your thinking to work well every day! Explore free resources, hints and tips at www.workspaceweek.org.au - because prevention is the best protection!

Do you know the modifiable risk factors that trigger work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs)?

Poorly executed lifting, pushing, pulling or bending, using computers in non-ergonomic workspaces (in an office or at home), poor posture, driving and repetitive strain injuries, and mental stress are the leading activities which can trigger work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

ACA chiropractors provide holistic healthcare and guidance on how to prevent work-related back and neck injuries.
