☀️ Post-Op Sunshine Walks for IVDD Dogs

Ralphy had his first proper outing today in his PetGear pram 🖤 After spinal surgery, it’s so important that our IVDD dogs still get a change of scenery and a little sunshine each day — without compromising their strict crate rest.

A few minutes outside can make a world of difference to their mental health. Fresh air, new smells, it all helps keep their stress levels down and supports calmer healing. But it has to be done right.

✨ Why a proper pet pram matters:
A flat, stable pram gives your dog full spinal support, keeps their joints protected, and prevents any bouncing or awkward angles that could undo their progress. It also offers shade and protection from the sun — which is crucial post-op, as their shaved areas can burn incredibly quickly.

✨ Tips for safe, short outings:
• Keep walks very short at first — literally a few minutes.
• Choose the smoothest path possible (no spicy off-roading 🚫🌶️).
• Ensure your pram is flat, supportive and sturdy.
• Avoid bumps, curbs and anything that might jolt their spine.
• Use sun protection — either built-in shade or a light cover.
• Always follow your vet/specialist’s time frames for crate rest.

Ralphy loved his tiny adventure today, and it reminded me how valuable these little moments are during recovery. Healing isn’t just physical — it’s emotional too. 💛

If your dog is on their IVDD journey, you’re doing an amazing job. Small, mindful outings like this can make all the difference.

Supporting Our Dogs Through Cognitive Decline

As Ralphy is now in his ninth year, I’ve been reflecting on how much our dogs change as they age — not just physically, but mentally too. Just like us, their brains experience natural ageing, and supporting their cognitive health can make a real difference to their quality of life.

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD) is similar to dementia in humans and can show up as:
• Restlessness at night
• Pacing or staring at walls
• Forgetting familiar routines or cues
• Increased anxiety or clinginess
• Accidents indoors
• Appearing “disconnected”

These changes aren’t just “getting old” — they’re signs the brain may need a little extra support.

I’ve started Ralphy on Petz Park Brain Support as recommended by my holistic vet, which I’ll just sprinkle over his breakfast, dinner, or in one of his slow feeders. It contains key ingredients to help protect and nourish the ageing brain:
✨ Phosphatidylserine – supports memory and learning
✨ Ginkgo Biloba – improves blood flow and alertness
✨ L-Carnitine & Omega-3 DHA – support energy and neuron health
✨ Vitamin E – powerful antioxidant protection

Alongside this, I focus on:
🐾 Mental enrichment (sniff walks & puzzles)
🐾 Regular massage to ease stress and tension
🐾 Predictable routines for security
🐾 Good sleep and balanced nutrition

We can’t stop ageing, but we can support it — helping our dogs stay connected, sharp, and content as they grow older. 🖤🐾

The first of its kind in Australia. A state-of-the-art, custom-built hydrotherapy machine designed to be fully mobile, and it’s coming to Hydro Hounds later this year.

This has been a dream of mine for a while, something I’ve been quietly working on behind the scenes(hence the reason behind my business name)… and I’m beyond excited to finally be able to share it.

Soon, the dogs of Perth will have access to mobile hydrotherapy, right at their doorstep. 🐾

If you’d like to register your interest or find out a little more, please send me a DM. Lots more info will be shared soon, and I’ll keep you all updated every step of the way.

🐾This is one of my newest patient, Boots – a sweet King Charles Cavalier cross who recently underwent TPLO surgery for cruciate ligament damage. His owner reached out to me with some concerns, as up to 50% of cases the opposite knee can also be affected after this kind of injury.

To give Boots the very best chance at recovery, I’ve created a completely personalised plan just for him. Today was his first session, and we’ve started by addressing compensatory soreness – the kind of tension that builds when a dog shifts more of their weight to one side to protect an injured limb.

In Boots’ case, his thighs and lumbar epaxials (the big supportive muscles along the lower back) are an area of focus, as they often take on extra strain following cruciate surgery.

I also applied a stabilisation taping over his stifle (knee joint) to give him some extra support between sessions. This helps to encourage more balanced movement while reducing the risk of overloading his other limb.

But treatment isn’t just about helping the operated leg recover – it’s also about prevention. By keeping the rest of his body balanced and mobile, and by releasing areas that might be pulling unevenly, I’ll be working to reduce the risk of his other knee developing the same issue. The goal is to keep his movement as natural and comfortable as possible while protecting him for the long term.

It’s always a privilege to be part of a dog’s rehab journey, and I’m so looking forward to working with Boots as he continues to heal and thrive. 🖤🐾

🌟Gentle iliopsoas stretches help lengthen this deep hip flexor, which often pulls on the lumbar spine when tight - a very common occurrence in Daschunds.

By releasing it, I’m easing pressure through the lower back, encouraging better spinal alignment and mobility, and giving Lesley more comfort in both his back and hind limbs.

It’s always a muscle group that I focus on with this breed and any patient that requires a little help with back pain 🐾🖤
