One of the greatest causes of postpartum depression is feeling unsupported.

Motherโ€™s coming to terms with their new identity, cut off from life as they once knew it, and managing feelings of isolation while being expected to have the inner resources to be responsible for their vulnerable newborn and keep them secure.

When a mother is stressed, it seems to be an impossible task to ask them to manage their baby's nervous system too.

The high rate of postnatal depression is sadly understandable, and there is no shame in suffering.

It doesnโ€™t mean that you cannot cope or are a bad mother. It means that unrealistic expectations are
placed on you.

I love hearing from you

Iโ€™ve made the most progress in my years of counselling with Jo. She asks the right questions to draw whatโ€™s on my mind in sitting in my subconscious so that I can work through it. I enjoy my sessions and fact this isnโ€™t one of those โ€˜if you meditate every day, drink more water and go for a walk, youโ€™ll feel betterโ€™ appointments. People who love themselves may wish to improve various aspects of their lives, yet they do not let their flaws push them toward low self-esteem or, worse, self-loathing. Strive to be the best version of yourself, but do not let your aspirations degrade your present self-image.

Motherhood can feel incredibly lonely. ๐Ÿ’” I still remember the pang of jealousy I felt as my husband left for work in the morning, able to stay connected to a world from which I felt so detached.

It was a world filled with adult conversations, hot coffee, and a sense of achievement in the workplace. But suddenly, my focus shifted from personal aspirations and social engagements to the relentless role of motherhood.

This transition led me, like so many other parents, to a profound sense of isolation as a new identity evolved and priorities changed.

Society often presents success in terms of job titles and income, undermining the immeasurable value of motherhood while highlighting its joys and downplaying the challenges.

This unrealistic portrayal can create a profound sense of inadequacy and isolation for mothers who understandably struggle or feel overwhelmed by the realities of their new role.

Social disconnection can lead to feelings of depression and resentment; itโ€™s important to reach out if they do.

Motherhood is the most important job there is, you are not alone in feeling lonely.

Attachment theory posits that how you were treated as a child may influence your relationships as an adult. Those who experienced challenging or dysfunctional relationships as children with unmet emotional or physical needs may experience relationship problems later in life.

Through working with a therapist, many people with insecure attachment styles may gain a sense of security for themselves and those they love.
Therapy may also help you understand a traumatic past and find emotional balance, increasing self-confidence and self-esteem.

I cherish my mission as a counsellor is to support you mental well being during pregnancy, postpartum and beyond.

Becoming a parent is an emotional rollercoaster. Pregnancy can be nerve-racking and life as a new parent can be so overwhelming. The worry of what is to come, or the stress of whether we are โ€˜doing it rightโ€™, the lack of sleep can all be both exhausting and anxiety-inducing.

While getting professional medical help for depression is always a good idea, especially if the condition is severe, there are also many non-medical solutions a person can take on their own to reduce symptoms of depression. Many therapists and doctors advise that depressed patients take steps like these, along with counseling and medication.

Starting these self-help actions may seem challenging at first to a depressed person. However, making even a small change each day can quickly build momentum and increase energy as symptoms of depression begin to subside. Taking small, daily steps toward a healthier life can have a significant effect on the reduction of mild to moderate symptoms of depression.
