Got to spend some time up in delivering communication, de-escalation, and also the Take Charge workshop with one of regional teams.

Always good getting out to different parts of WA.

Some of the main things in the sessions was around keeping things simple and practical:

• Slowing things down instead of rushing or hustling all the time
• Choosing how you respond, rather than going on autopilot

And at the same time, acknowledging we’re human. We won’t get it right every time… but having a few strategies in place gives us the best chance when it matters.

Appreciate the team having me up there and getting stuck into it.😊

Spent the weekend in the City CBD delivering Mental Health First Aid with a group who chose to invest their time in learning how to support someone who might be struggling.

We covered how to recognise the signs, how to have the conversation, and importantly, understanding our role as first aiders.

It’s not about having all the answers, i put that pressure on myself when I first became a first aider, but just by showing up, caring, listening, and letting someone know they’re not alone can be incredibly impactful.

Thank you and
I take my hat off to everyone who showed up, got involved, and were willing to learn and have such great conversations even after a busy week. 🎩

Don’t wait for symptoms.
Prostate cancer often has no early warning signs was a big takeaway for me while I delivered a Health First Aid International training with the fantastic PCaHELP team.

The focus was supporting support group leaders with the skills and confidence to have conversations around mental health and how to support others doing it tough.

In Australia, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85.
So if you know 6 men… one of them will be affected.
Your dad, your brother, your mate or yourself.

The encouraging part is, if it’s caught early, the 5-year survival rate is close to 100%.

And despite what a lot of blokes still think, you don’t have to go straight to the finger test.👆
A simple PSA blood test is often the first step. Quick, straightforward, and it can give you an early signal.

A big thank you to Bezant for his tireless work, and to everyone in the room.
Not just for showing up and getting involved in the training, but for the work you do every day supporting men and their families.

And thank you to Ian Wee and the Perth Integrated Health Group of Companies for their generosity in supporting this space.

If you’re reading this… go and get checked chat with your GP
Or encourage the men in your life to.

I’ve got mine booked in the next few days.😊

Back in with the ATCO crews this week working on de-escalation and communication skills that help not just at work but in our personal lives too.

The main takeaways for the workshop are-
Control the controllables when things get heated.
Pause.
Regulate yourself first.
Respond from a place of understanding and try to see where the other person is coming from.

We collaborated and customised the training to make it relatable specifically for their staff and the pressures of their industry.

High pressure environments.
Gas leaks in public spaces.
Broken gas pipes.
People having their gas turned off.
Confusion. Frustration. Communication breaking down.

The crews have been great, having honest conversations and challenging themselves.

And that’s how communication improves and sometimes there’s no need for actual de- escalation as it doesn’t reach that point.

I tip my hat to who have invested in all their field staff to complete the training.

This weekend was another reminder of why I feel so grateful to do the ‘job’ I have.

Through , we delivered a two day course to an incredible group of locals who gave up their weekend to build real skills in supporting others with mental health challenges.

Great conversations. Honest discussions. Confidence built. Connections formed.

Sixteen more people in our community now feel more equipped to recognise when someone might be struggling, start a conversation, and respond in a practical, evidence based way.

Thank you to everyone who committed their time and for those who made it happen. Weekends are precious. And you chose to invest yours back into the community happy days 😊

I’m also delivering a public Mental Health First Aid course on March 21 and 22 in the CBD, heavily subsidised by Charity to make it more accessible.

If cost has ever been the barrier, this is a great opportunity. It runs across the weekend as well, so no need to take time off work. https://lnkd.in/gQiDNK6B

I was recently honoured to be named Citizen of the Year by the .

I wanted to share this as a reflection on what volunteering has given me.

From a purely selfish point of view, I like helping people.
It makes me feel good.
It fills my cup.
Whether it’s spending time with the awesome people at , sitting in a men’s circle with and hearing a bloke say, I’ve had it pretty rough lately, this is exactly what I needed, or planning community events with , those moments of connection matter deeply to me.

In the past, I’ve felt overwhelmed by the amount of pain and suffering we see every day around the world. I’ve often found that disempowering. What I’ve learned, though, is that real change doesn’t have to be global. It can start right on our own doorstep. Imagine the footprint if everyone did something small, where they live.

Volunteering doesn’t have to mean starting an organisation or taking on something huge. It might be hosting a games night, helping with care packs, or lending your time locally in a small but meaningful way.

There are far too many names to mention here, but I want to say a genuine thank you to everyone who gives their time, energy, and care to the groups I’ve spent time with. This recognition belongs to all of you just as much as it does to me.

I also want to thank the City of Bayswater for the continued support of community initiatives like Bayswater Blokes.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved in your community but weren’t sure where to start, is a great option, or feel free to reach out and have a chat.

Sometimes helping others is also how we help ourselves.

Buzzing way to start the year 😊

I’ll admit, I was curious how this would land online.
It landed well 😊

What started years ago as a face to face beginner public speaking workshop has now been delivered online with Rail’s HSE team across the APAC region, supporting team members in Taiwan, China, India, and across Australia.

Face to face is still my first choice, but online delivery is a very close second when teams are spread across time zones and countries.

Public speaking in workplaces is rarely about stages or spotlights.
It’s about speaking clearly in meetings, explaining risk, handling questions, and feeling less in your head when you’re put on the spot.

Huge thanks to the Hitachi HSE team for their openness, energy, and engagement 🙏

Back up to Karratha delivering Mental Health First Aid and what a great way to kick off the year.

I love the energy in these courses. People show up curious, open, and genuinely wanting to support each other better.

Participants learn how to recognise early signs of mental health challenges, have confident conversations, respond to crises, and guide people toward the right support.

The impact goes far beyond the workplace.
These skills travel home into families, friendships, sporting clubs, and everyday life.

Huge thanks to everyone who showed up, asked great questions, and leaned into the learning. A brilliant reminder of why this work matters so much 😊

Our final Men’s BBQ for 2025 was held yesterday, with 17 men coming through over the course of the morning.

It’s been a great year for our BBQs.
Friendships have formed, hundreds of sausages have been eaten, and a genuine sense of community has grown.

A huge thank you to for your continued support and sponsorship throughout 2025. If you have any bearded people in your life, they are well worth checking out for a Christmas present.

Thank you also to for your generosity and donating the sausages. They were something special and a big hit on the day. Check out their amazing food.

And a big thanks to .marchant.photography who gave up his Sunday morning to support a group of blokes and capture the spirit of the event.as you can see the photos are top quality so hit him up if you’re looking for a photographer.

Our mission has always been to create a place of community and connection, and this year we have truly done that.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Men’s BBQs throughout the year.

Our next BBQ will be held on Sunday 18 January.🙏❤️🎅

A big thank you to Luke and the team at Sequence Alliance for such a welcoming and engaging group.

Every session reinforces this for me. When people feel safe, respected, and supported, the learning goes deeper. Conversations open up. Confidence grows. And people lean into the skills rather than just ticking a box.

It was great to see everyone engaging with the content, asking thoughtful questions, and practising how to support others in real world situations.

Mental health skills matter. And so does the environment we learn them in. This group nailed both.

Thanks again and team for creating such a supportive space.🫶
