If your pet is constantly itchy or dealing with recurring ear or skin issues, intradermal allergy testing can help us uncover what’s really going on.

This test allows us to see how your pet’s immune system responds to common environmental allergens like pollens, grasses, weeds, moulds, and dust mites. By introducing tiny amounts of these allergens into the skin, we can observe reactions and build a detailed allergy profile unique to your pet.

From there, we move beyond temporary relief and create a tailored immunotherapy plan designed to target the underlying cause. The aim is to reduce itching, minimise infections, and improve overall comfort long-term.

Every pet is different, which is why we take the time to carefully assess each result and customise treatment accordingly.

⚠️ It’s important to note that food allergies can’t be diagnosed this way and require a specific diet trial.

📞 If your pet is struggling with ongoing itch or ear problems, give us a call on 08 6277 9430 to book a consult.

🐾 What does bee & wasp allergy treatment involve?

Managing sting allergies in dogs starts with understanding exactly what they react to.

The process begins with intradermal allergy testing, where small amounts of bee and wasp venom are introduced into the skin to assess your dog’s immune response.

From there, we move into cluster rush therapy - gradually increasing doses of venom over a structured 3-week-program to build tolerance and protection.

Treatment continues with regular maintenance injections over time, helping reduce the risk of severe reactions in the future.

Every step is carefully monitored and tailored to your dog, with safety and comfort as our priority.

If your pet has had a reaction to a sting, we’re here to help guide you through the next steps. 🐝

If only intradermal skin testing were this quick… ✨

While it might look simple, intradermal allergy testing is the gold standard for uncovering what’s really causing your pet’s itchy skin and ears. 🐶👂🌿

By testing tiny amounts of common allergens (like tree pollens, grasses, moulds, and dust mites), we can pinpoint the triggers and create a personalised immunotherapy plan to help keep the itch under control long-term. 💉🐾

No guesswork - just science and a team dedicated to helping your pet feel comfortable again. 👩‍⚕️🧡

For pets on ongoing medication, regular blood testing plays an important role in their care. While yearly checks are often recommended, some medications require monitoring every 6–12 month, and certain specialised treatments may need even more frequent testing. This is always tailored to your pet’s individual needs, including their treatment plan, medical history, and previous lab results, to ensure everything is working as it should behind the scenes.

If your pet is booked in for a procedure involving anaesthesia, a recent blood test can also be really helpful. This is especially important for senior pets or if it’s been a while since their last check, as it allows us to tailor care as safely as possible and make informed decisions for each individual pet.

We may also run a urine test alongside blood work to assess kidney health and provide a more complete picture of your pet’s internal wellbeing.

These tests are quick, low-stress, and incredibly valuable for picking up changes early. It’s a simple step that helps us stay one step ahead and support your pet’s ongoing health and comfort. 💛

This handsome Bull Mastiff had a long history of skin and ear issues, along with something his carers were even more worried about - extreme lethargy. He had become very quiet, sleepy, and disinterested in things he used to enjoy. 🐾

He had chronic ear infections, itchy inflamed skin, and infected toes, with clinical signs that suggested a medical cause of his lethargy. Further testing revealed that Boss was suffering from hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland produces insufficient hormone to support normal body function.

Hypothyroidism in dogs can cause:
▪️Severe lethargy and mental dullness
▪️Weight gain and reduced energy
▪️Recurrent skin infections
▪️Hair loss and skin pigmentation changes
▪️Ear problems

🩺 What we did:
Boss started thyroid hormone replacement therapy and treatment for his secondary skin and ear infections.

💙 The good news:
Within weeks of starting treatment, Boss’s carers reported a wonderful change - he was brighter, more alert, wagging his tail and playing with other dogs again.
Cases like Boss remind us how important it is to look for underlying medical causes when skin disease and lethargy occur together.

If your dog has ongoing ear infections, recurrent skin problems, or just doesn’t seem like themselves anymore, it may be worth investigating further.

Cat allergy testing… but make it glow. ✨🐾

When we perform intradermal allergy testing in cats, their reactions can be much more subtle than what we see in dogs. That can make the results harder to interpret under normal lighting.

To help us see things more clearly, we use fluorescein, a special contrast agent given through an IV catheter at the end of the test. Then, with the help of a Wood’s Lamp, the test area lights up allowing positive reactions to stand out much more clearly. 🌟

This clever technique helps our dermatology team pinpoint which allergens may be affecting your cat, so we can create a tailored treatment plan designed just for them.

A little glow goes a long way when it comes to helping our feline patients feel comfortable in their own skin. 💜😻

Cute hellos from the gang we saw at our Balcatta Bee & Wasp Clinic this week! 🐝🐾

These brave patients were in together for their venom immunotherapy cluster treatments, all taking their appointments like absolute champions.

Cluster days at our Balcatta clinic mean a few of our bee & wasp allergy patients come in on Wednesdays for their scheduled injections, with our team closely monitoring everyone to make sure treatment runs safely and smoothly.

We love seeing our little Wednesday crew (and making sure they get plenty of pats along the way). 🥰

If your dog has experienced a bee or wasp reaction, our dermatology team can guide you through testing and treatment options.

This patient was diagnosed with actinic keratosis, a sun-related skin condition that commonly affects sparsely haired, lightly pigmented areas.

On examination, there were several focal crusting lesions along the inguinal region, as well as areas of redness and scaling. The patient was admitted for targeted CO₂ laser therapy.

We used the laser to precisely treat the focal lesions and resurface surrounding areas affected by actinic dermatitis. CO₂ laser allows for controlled removal of damaged tissue while supporting smoother healing.

A great example of how advanced dermatology tools can help manage sun-induced skin disease 🐾☀️

If you notice crusting, scaling, or persistent red patches on your pet, especially in sun-exposed areas, early assessment is important.
