A new locally designed reverse osmosis water plant is now fully operational at Fremantle Hospital, strengthening its critical sterilisation services 💧

Located closer to where it’s needed – supporting the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) and theatres – the plant delivers high quality purified water required for the cleaning, decontamination, and sterilisation of reusable medical devices.

The old plant is due to be decommissioned, having reached its end of life.

Thank you to the FH Infrastructure & Facilities Management team, who partnered with Ace Plus and Western Water Solutions, for delivering this important upgrade 👏

In our next We Are SMHS feature, meet Paul Artis, Coordinator of Nursing for Home Hospital at SMHS 🏠

With more than 30 years in public health, Paul’s career has been shaped by taking opportunities as they arise - from moving interstate to stepping into new roles across SMHS. He’s almost mirrored this in life outside of work, including being part of the Army Reserves.

Today, he leads the multi disciplinary Home Hospital team delivering acute care to patients in the comfort of their own homes, while helping create capacity across SMHS sites.

For Paul, nothing beats seeing patients recover at home and return to everyday life. When he’s not at work, you’ll find him on the sidelines coaching at his local footy club 🏉

Today we officially opened WA’s first Older Adults Health Hub, giving older people easier access to coordinated, community‑based care that helps them stay well and independent at home🏡

Based in Cockburn, the hub has a dedicated team of medical, nursing and allied health professionals supporting older adults with complex needs while guiding carers through the aged care system 👨‍⚕️

This early‑intervention model is a major step forward for reducing avoidable hospital stays and strengthening support for our ageing community.

It was great to have the Minister for Health, Mental Health, Meredith Hammat MLA, Minister for Aged Care, Simone McGurk MLA and Member for Cockburn, David Scaife MLA at the hub to see firsthand our commitment to providing patient-centred care to older adults 💜

From rubber ducks to retirement... Eric Watson is getting ready to hang up his towel after 12 years of running the hydrotherapy pool at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) 💧

Reflecting on almost 50 years working in public health, the FSH Hydrotherapy Service Allied Health Assistant says it will be the patients he will miss the most.

While Eric hopes to be remembered for his role in recruiting allied health staff as well as keeping patients’ safe poolside, we know Eric will be remembered for so much more. His care, his humour, his heart and his legendary collection of rubber ducks, each representing a patient who has completed treatment in the hydro pool.

We wish you all the best in your retirement, Eric!

Meet Zeyad 👋

A senior cancer pharmacist working at Rockingham General Hospital, Zeyad is a Muslim Egyptian Australian. He has lived in many countries, migrated to Australia in 1995 and has three children. Zeyad speaks Arabic and English fluently and a little bit of French.

We asked Zeyad what inclusion means to him:

“Being included in the mainstream, as part of it. Not treated different or special, but also not sidelined.”

This week marked national Closing the Gap Day, highlighting the urgent need to work together towards health equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

SMHS is committed to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people through culturally safe, responsive and community-informed care.

Some of the key initiatives underway at SMHS to help close the gap include:

🟡 Embedding AHPRA-registered Aboriginal Health Practitioners across our hospital emergency departments, renal and dialysis, maternity, neonates, paediatrics and Aboriginal antenatal clinics to provide culturally appropriate care for Aboriginal patients.

🟠 Coordinating the statewide Aboriginal person-centred care training for the WA Health workforce, helping healthcare workers across WA build a better understanding of the values, beliefs and practices of Aboriginal people.

⚫ Working with Aboriginal Health Advisory Groups at our hospital sites, providing culturally responsive guidance and strategic advice on behalf of Aboriginal consumers across the SMHS catchment area.

Meet Elise 👋

A senior data analyst in the SMHS Safety Quality and Consumer Engagement team, Elise is Chinese and speaks Mandarin. She is from mainland China and moved to Australia in 2011.

We asked Elise how diversity makes us stronger:

“Diversity makes us stronger by combining different traditions, perspectives and ways of thinking, which leads to greater creativity, understanding and success.”
