Australia is edging closer to a one-million-strong health workforce, with 959,838 practitioners now registered nationally, a 4.3% increase on last year.

This equates to 3.5 registered health practitioners for every 100 Australians, reflecting steady growth across all professions, including doctors, nurses, dentists, allied health and the expanding paramedicine and psychology sectors.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in the registered health workforce has increased, with 12,015 practitioners now registered nationally, representing 1.3% of the workforce. While still well below the 3.8% representation in the general population, several professions, including nursing, midwifery, medical radiation practice, occupational therapy, paramedicine and psychology, recorded year-on-year increases.

Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency - Ahpra's latest report also outlines a shift toward more proactive regulation, with targeted action in fast-growing areas such as non-surgical cosmetic procedures and medicinal cannabis.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath spoke to Channel 10 News about reports that multiple students used the same needle to test their blood as part of a diabetes exercise at a primary school in Perth's south, saying that these things just shouldn't happen.

Parents are encouraged to get their children in for a blood test and to follow health advice.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath, CEO Dr Bennie Ng, and General Manager – Policy & Communications Jeremy Lee visited the State Health Operations Centre (SHOC).

The SHOC coordinates patient movements and emergency responses across WA. It brings together key agencies to manage hospital demand and optimise capacity across our vast State.

The team also explored the WA Virtual Emergency Department (WAVED), which connects patients with emergency clinicians virtually. This service has already supported over 5,000 patients, with more than 70% avoiding an unnecessary hospital visit, easing pressure on emergency departments and improving access to timely care.

A big thank you to Steven Norris, Deputy Chief Clinical Operations Officer, and the SHOC team for showcasing these innovations and for their dedication to improving emergency care for all Western Australians.

Some news is good news, in this week's President's Blog.

It’s fair to say that the Government ticked off a few boxes when they announced an additional $1 billion for the Building Hospitals Fund on Thursday 6 November.

On that day, the Premier announced that the State Government was set to purchase St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital for use as a public hospital in 2026, subject to the outcome of commercial negotiations; build a six-storey new ED for Royal Perth Hospital; and a new six-storey Peel Health Campus.

The AMA (WA)’s been asking for more beds and investment into our health infrastructure. So it’s wonderful to see the Government listen and to take these kind of steps that we know need to be done.

Two recent releases from Luna Palace Cinemas have health-related themes in different and sometimes surprising ways, writes Martin Turner.

Prime Minister is a candid and affecting portrait of New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern.

The documentary chronicles a tumultuous prime ministership, which included the shooting of 51 people in two mosques, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Her measures to protect the population were highly successful but opposition to those measures was extreme and seemed to shake her understanding of her country, despite her resolve.

The documentary skilfully combines a range of sources including news coverage, home videos filmed by Ardern’s partner, Clarke Gayford, unheard audio from her time in office, and reflections from the Jacinda of today.

Die My Love puts the erroneously named Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) through the wringer, or several wringers, whether it’s the hand, the face, or anything she can mangle or smash herself against.

A mesmerising Lawrence is seldom out of shot, and though we see partner Jackson (Robert Pattinson) in several states of exhausted sleep, she seldom rests, let alone slumbers. It’s the kind of movie where you wish she would, just to give you a minute to compose yourself.

Mental health is definitely a core element of the movie, but Grace’s condition is never spelt out and it would be wrong to see it as a case study of a woman with a depressive illness. The integrity and artistic success of Die My Love is evident in that Ramsay tells a story about chaos that never devolves into chaos itself. She is simply too assured and skilled as a director for that.
