In his final blog post for the year, AMA (WA) President Kyle Hoath writes about the state of public hospitals, and the promising work we've seen as the year comes to a close.

Months of record-breaking ramping, and the longest ED wait times in the country, are results we can’t accept again next year. But the AMA (WA) is supportive and cautiously optimistic about the plans that the State Government are putting in place to manage next winter's load.

The majority of Australian medicinal cannabis prescriptions are coming from overseas, the ABC's Alan Kohler has reported, which means that it has not gone through the usual trials to determine quality, safety and effectiveness, like other drugs.

The AMA and the Pharmacy Guild are alarmed about these developments, and are calling for medicinal cannabis to be made into a normal prescription medicine, with safety and effectiveness fully understood.

AMA (WA) President Kyle Hoath spoke to 6PR Perth about a promising reduction in risky drinking among young teenagers, especially those aged 14-17.

This suggests that our health messaging is working to encourage more responsible drinking among young people, which will have a positive effect on their health throughout their lives.

But risky drinking levels are still too high, and there's more work to be done. As we head into the festive season, please enjoy alcohol responsibly.

The AMA (WA) welcomes the Medical Board of Australia’s decision to work with the medical profession on developing profession-led strategies that support late-career doctors to continue practising safely.

Consistent with the position of the Federal AMA, we strongly support an approach that is evidence-based, balanced and respectful, recognising the immense contribution that late-career doctors make to patient care, clinical leadership, and mentorship across our health system.

We are pleased the Board has decided not to proceed with mandatory health checks based solely on age, and instead focus on collaborative, supportive measures that promote safe, sustainable practice. As the Federal AMA has emphasised, every doctor should have access to a usual GP and regular confidential check-ups as a voluntary and preventive measure, not as a regulatory requirement.

Late-career doctors continue to provide high-quality care. It is essential the system recognises their autonomy, experience and ongoing value, while ensuring robust and transparent processes to maintain public confidence. The AMA (WA) looks forward to working with the Medical Board, specialist colleges, CPD homes and doctors’ health services to help shape these profession-led supports and ensure Western Australian doctors are well-supported at every stage of their careers.

Congratulations to Pramana Medical Centre, who won the inaugural Practice of the Year Award at the recent AMA (WA)’s 2025 Awards night.

Pramana Medical Group, established in 2021, has redefined what patient-centred primary care looks like in Australia. Serving more than 7,000 active patients—65% of whom are First Nations people, the remaining being culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups, individuals experiencing homelessness, and people living with disability. Pramana has made clinical excellence inseparable from equity by creating a centre that delivers health without barriers.

Their trauma-informed, culturally safe, and holistic model addresses social determinants of health in parallel with clinical care. Weekly home-visit clinics, staffed by a GP, nurse, and social worker, bring healthcare directly to families who might otherwise remain disengaged. By meeting people where they are, Pramana helps rebuild trust with families who may have been disconnected from care for years or decades.

Pramana’s clinical team is uniquely interdisciplinary, resembling more of a hospital than a GP clinic. The workforce includes GPs, nurse practitioners, primary care nurses, a psychiatrist specialising in addiction, a clinical pharmacist, diabetes educator, podiatrist, optometrist, chiropractor, sleep specialist, dietitian, exercise physiologist, cardiologist, cardiac sonographer, respiratory nurse, and domestic violence social worker. Together they deliver evidence-based wraparound care, while innovative partnerships with tertiary services bring outpatient appointments into the clinic and integrate joint telehealth with GPs to enhance trust and engagement for marginalised communities.

PMC ensures clinical excellence is not a privilege but a right delivered in ways that are safe, culturally sensitive, and accessible.

In August, Pramana’s Dr Rajeshwary (Raji) Krishnan received the AMA’s President’s award, recognising her dedication to improving health outcomes for multiple generations of First Nations families. Dr Krishnan was also named the 2025 RACGP GP of the Year.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath, CEO Dr Bennie Ng, Kevin Sneddon, General Manager Industrial Relations and Jeremy Lee, General Manager Policy and Communications had a productive and constructive discussion with Hon Simone McGurk MLA, Minister for Industrial Relations; Aged Care and Seniors, and her team.

We explored a range of industrial issues impacting our members and worked through potential solutions. Importantly, the AMA (WA) committed to supporting the WA Government in advocating to the Commonwealth for more aged care beds and home care packages for elderly Western Australians. This is a critical step in addressing ambulance ramping that challenged WA public hospitals last winter. Collaboration is key to supporting medical practitioners and improving outcomes for their patients.

11/12/2025

WA patients are waiting in emergency departments for an average of 44 minutes, which is more than double the national average, even though we recorded one of the smallest increases in ED presentations.

AMA (WA) President Kyle Hoath told ABC News Perth that doctors aren't surprised by this result.

The AMA (WA) has been asking for more beds and investment into our health infrastructure, and clearly more needs to be done to get our public hospitals up to the standard WA patients deserve.
