Our 2025 Christmas at Y Striders

It’s our last session of the year and that means:-
Over sixty Y Striders came for Zumba warm ups with trainer Deb
Lots of laughter and socialising over our shared breakfast
Drawing a winner of club Captain Ken’s Christmas challenge, (congratulations Kaye and John)
But most importantly, the presentation of the Brian Cook Award for the most significant contribution to the club over this year – and many others. Ann R, our social co-ordinator over the last 15 years was a worthy and popular choice, as her efforts have been a key part of our clubs’ ongoing success.
Although our trainer led sessions take a break until Saturday 3 January in the New Year, there will be many keen Y Striders gathering informally for friendly walks and coffee in the break I’m sure .

Fancy a swim in Loch Lomond?
Perhaps a hike up mountains or cycling in Austria? Maybe an Uzbekistan tour or steps in Croatia or Italy is on your bucket list.
All these adventures and more have recently filled the itineraries of some of our intrepid Y Striders, who’ve swapped exercising on the local footpaths for the wonders of the world.
Martin took a dip in Scotland in his wetsuit,..Brrr! Then joined nine others on a bike/barge tour in Germany and a further hike in Switzerland. Sarah travelled Uzbekistan. Kerry climbed near the Matterhorn, Deb and Vanessa separately went to Croatia and Deb on to Italy
So many adventures, but one thing in common – keeping fit to enjoy it all.
You don’t need to be going overseas to have a fitness goal – keeping active to enjoy life at home is reason enough to join Y Striders and get moving. Find out more at https://ystriders.org.au and sign up for our 4 week FREE trial.

Up Hill and Down Dale
Adelaide is not just a city of churches, it’s very hilly. With a reputation as ideal wine country as well. Ten Y Striders joined our guide Jay on a 3-day hike through the Clare Valley Wine and Wilderness region recently. Each day we walked 10km through hilly and rocky terrain, but we were rewarded with magnificent views, lovely wine tastings, gourmet meals, and luxury accommodation at the heritage listed Bungaree Station.
Visiting many historical sites around Adelaide in the week after gave an insight into the history and hardships of early German Lutheran settlers. Later, some headed on to Kangaroo Island, some onto Sydney and south of Adelaide to visit family and others returned home.
At the same time, another group of Y Striders travelled to Europe to complete a bike/barge tour, cycling along the Rhine during the day, followed by luxury accommodation and meals on the barge. On completion of the tour, some continued to do walking tours through Italy and one on to Uzbekistan.
Tackling little adventures like this is why many Y Striders regularly attend multiple sessions. They train to keep fit.
Are you searching for a way to boost your fitness? Why not take the first step and join Y Striders? Don’t wait for the perfect moment because the best time to begin, is now.
Visit our website and sign up for a free trial or come along for a chat – there’s no pressure and new faces are always welcome. Bring a friend or come solo – you’ll soon feel part of the Y Striders family. Check https://ystriders.org.au/membership/4-week-free-trial/

We love to go a wandering ……..
We love fitness, we enjoy socialising, we like adventures, so a big motivation to keep fit for many Y Striders is to enjoy travel. This year we have seen couples and groups heading off overseas to Vietnam, China, Iceland, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Japan, India, England, Canada, Scotland, Paris and in Australia to Busselton, Albany, Sydney, The North West, country New South Wales and Tasmania. In the coming year many have plans and bookings for a bike barge trip on the Danube with various after trips in Europe and UK, our club annual long weekend down south and 40 already down to repeat the Bondi to Manly 80Kms/7 day walk in Sydney.
All this activity and adventure separate to our Y Striders walking club requires a good level of fitness to enjoy the trips, but also life at home with friends and family. That’s why so many turn up to our various trainer lead warm-ups before walking, running or strength sessions. Of course, this accompanies the equally important social aspect of coffee after and the forming of various friendship groups that play mahjong, bike ride, swim or go to shows. There seems to be something for everyone to get involved in when you meet like-minded people through Y Striders. And the winner is……

Y Striders gathered and warmed up with trainers at Quarantine Park on Sunday for our annual Anne Rinaldi Memorial walk/run from Bicton along the river towards Fremantle. Many of the runners including Eva, Kaye, Bill, Terry and Jenny K did the whole 12kms. Others were happy with walking a shorter distance – with a stop at Cool Beans for a reviving coffee :-)
Sharing and socialising is such a big part of Y Striders and Ros generously offered to again host the post walk brunch, tea and coffee. Volunteers supplied an abundance of yummy food choices so we were all happily chatting and eating when it was time for president Jennie T to present the Anne Rinaldi award.
Our four trainers discuss and choose the person they feel has worked to achieve their own personal best throughout the year. Their choice this year was Jenny K, one of our founding members, who set a goal for herself to build up to running again after a break devoting more time to her work. She inspires others to set their own targets and work steadily towards their goal. Congratulations Jenny K!

We celebrated the club's 28th birthday today with a lovely lunch at Sittella Winery. Our destination was a mystery which we found by following Graeme's car rally instructions which proved to be quite challenging.
The winners of the car rally were Joanne, Mark and Leonie. Second place went to Kevin, Pam and Ros and third place was Sandie, James, Bronwen and Louie.
Ken also announced the winner of the June Monthly challenge - Fran.
Everyone agreed this was another great event and thanks needs to go to Ann, Elizabeth and Graeme for organising the day.

10 out of 10
Was the unanimous vote by fifty Y Striders at the end of our annual long weekend away. For the last 28 years our club of walkers and runners have visited many of WA’s country towns, (usually in the south west), walking part of the Bibbulmun, Cape to Cape or Wadandi tracks.
This year, in Busselton, we walked 16.5kms from Dunsborough to the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse. There were extra walks from the Lighthouse to Sugar Loaf Rock, the famous one-mile long Jetty, and naturally the coffee shop in nearby Vasse.
It was beyond exercise, more a social connection. There were meals at Tonic by the Bay, Amelia Park Lodge Restaurant, gourmet pizzas delivered to The Hub at RAC caravan Park, and casual get togethers over a barbeque.
Many extended their stay from the usual 3 nights, so there were extra opportunities for long lunches at wineries and breweries and a chance to shop in Dunsborough and Busselton.
The success of these annual gatherings is attributed to the dedicated volunteers within the Y Striders club. These individuals meticulously plan and organise the walks, social activities, and accommodation options, ensuring an enjoyable experience for all participants. Their efforts exemplify the club’s ethos of teamwork and community spirit.

Y Striders - Stepping Out and Stepping Up!
Four times a year Y Striders take their Saturday 7am session Off Site for a bit of variety and fun. In May we head to Manning Park in Spearwood in preparation for our annual long weekend away at the end of the month, (which usually involves extra hiking and bushwalks – and lots of socialising). The 192 steps at Manning Park offers an extra work out for cardio and legs while the walk around the lake suits those less inclined to the climbing challenge. Our trainer Jack makes sure we all go through warm up stretches before we head off to exercise in the beautiful Autumn weather, and the thought of coffee and breakfast at nearby Coco & Boho is a good incentive to complete our exercise.
Some of us were feeling a bit leg sore a few days after tackling the stairs and were wondering how we managed 7 consecutive days on the Bondi to Manly walk in Sydney last October, where every day saw many, many more steps than Manning Steps. But that is one of the benefits of Y Striders, setting personal and group goals and working and training together is more fun. A few more weeks of preparation and perhaps joining the Ramblers group on Tuesdays at Manning Park should have us ready for our walks down south :-)

Did you know walking is medicine?
I was recently shown an interesting article by an American physician and author, (Dr Mark Hyman), about walking as medicine and I thought it was worth sharing as it is relevant to our general club philosophy and our current 30day club challenge. So the article is quoted below.

“Just 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week has been linked to a 19% lower risk of heart disease. It helps regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. It supports joint health by keeping them lubricated and strengthening the surrounding muscles, even reducing arthritis-related pain. It activates fat-burning pathways, helping with weight management and lowering dangerous belly fat.
And when it comes to longevity, walking is one of the simplest things you can do to extend your life—those who take around 8,000 steps per day have a 40–50% lower risk of premature death.
And the benefits don’t stop at the body—walking is also a game-changer for the brain.
Regular walks reduce stress hormones like cortisol, increase feel-good endorphins, and stimulates BDNF, a protein that helps neurons grow and protects against cognitive decline. Some studies even suggest that brisk walking can be as effective as antidepressants for mild to moderate depression!
We’ve been conditioned to believe that fitness has to be extreme to be effective, but that’s simply not true. Walking isn’t just exercise—it’s a form of preventative medicine. It’s accessible, free, and one of the most powerful ways to improve your health, one step at a time.
So, are you getting your steps in today?”
