A little ASMR for your Friday evening. Sound on 🔊

Herbal tinctures might seem like magic (and seem to work like magic ✨) but they are surprisingly scientific! The herbal extracts have a concentration ratio and upper and lower limits for the doses, the interactions with other herbs and medications must be considered, amounts determined and carefully measured, so that when you pour your dose each day and glug that green (or brown!) liquid down, you can be confident it’s going to work as intended.

Herbal medicine doesn’t always work overnight - but it does work. 🌿

Some plant extracts are instant magic workers, and others take time to do the trick. 🪄

Come and see one of our naturopaths to find out how (and if) herbal medicine can help you with your health and wellness goals.

🌿 IV Nutrient Therapy in Perth – From $100 🌿

Many people take supplements to support their health, but did you know, for some people, specific nutrients may be more effective when delivered directly into the bloodstream through IV therapy?

IV nutrient therapy allows vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to bypass the digestive system, delivering nutrients directly to your cells and tissues where they’re needed most for recovery, supporting your immune system or replenishing lost nutirents after illness or injury.

This can be beneficial for people experiencing:

• Chronic stress, fatigue, anxiety or depression
• Digestive issues affecting nutrient absorption
• Chronic illness or immune depletion
• Recovery after surgery or injury
• Cancer support as part of an integrative care plan

At Perth Natural Medical Clinic, we offer one of Perth’s most affordable IV therapy options with our unique BYO IV system.

How it works:

1️⃣ Your doctor provides a prescription
2️⃣ Your IV nutrients are dispensed at a pharmacy
3️⃣ Nurse Ali administers the IV infusion safely and professionally at PNMC

IV administration starts from just $100 ($125 with a port).

Our IV therapy room is designed to help you relax, with comfortable recliners, a calm environment, and sometimes even a visit from Nugget – our friendly Labrador therapy dog.

Many patients tell us their IV sessions become a peaceful pause in their week.

If you're curious whether IV therapy could support your health, speak with your doctor and then book your session with our team.

📞 Call our team on 08 9328 9233 to learn more or book your IV therapy appointment.

Even when you’re excited to do more, sometimes you just need to honour your body’s signals 🥱 and rest.

Nugget with all the health wisdom.

Nugget is Nurse Ali’s therapy dog, and comes in to PNMC to bring some extra cheer to those having IV drip therapy.

Aside from Nugsy, there’s so many reasons why people choose our IV drip therapy service:

1. It’s one of (if not THE) most affordable ways to get JB nutrient therapy in Perth. Prices start at $100!

2. Ali is highly experienced so you don’t get stabbed more than you need 💉

3. We have the comfiest recliners in our air conditioned, natural light-filled space

4. You bring your own IV materials (after getting a script filled from your GP) and can take advantage of our compounding pharmacy arrangement, which is not only convenient, but you can also save $$$ 💸

If you want to know more about the best place for IV drip therapy in Perth, give our team a call on 08 9328 9233 📞😊

😳🥵 The Role of Cortisol in the Stress Response 🤯😳

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands that acts as a key messenger in the body's stress response. Cortisol levels are also naturally elevated in the morning, helping us to wake from our nightly slumber.

This hormone helps regulate your metabolism, blood sugar levels, immune function, and inflammation.

When the body perceives stress, cortisol is released to provide energy and get the body ready for imminent attack or to run away - but chronic stress can lead to dysregulation, affecting various body systems.

This is what cortisol does when you're under stress:

🩸 Raises blood sugar levels by stimulating glucose production to provide immediate energy.

😑 Suppresses digestive and reproductive systems to conserve energy for dealing with stressors.

🔥 Increases blood pressure, amplifies effects of adrenaline and promotes sodium retention.

🫃Alters fat metabolism, which over time increases abdominal fat.

🥱 Changes sleep patterns by interfering with melatonin production and delaying sleep onset.

😔 Impacts mood and cognition, leading to anxiety, irritability, and brain fog.

These are all extremely helpful functions when you do need to respond to a genuine physical threat in your environment, but in our modern world, the threats - or stressors - come in many forms.

If your stress levels are wreaking havoc with your health, come and see one of our practitioners for natural, effective treatment to reduce the impacts of high cortisol, better manage stress and treat any deficiencies resulting from ongoing chronic stress.

You can book online or call our team on 08 9328 9233. 🦋

YOUR BRAIN HEALTH DOESN’T DECLINE OVERNIGHT

If you want to be someone who still “has all their marbles” in your 70s, 80s and beyond, it’s worth thinking about your brain health now.

Cognitive decline happens slowly, over years or even decades of compounding risk factors - which we are sharing today (and over on our blog)

The good news is that protecting your brain happens over years and decades too! Starting now sets you on a different path.

Here are some of the key factors we now know can affect long-term brain health.

INFECTIONS AND ALZHEIMER’S RISK
Most adults carry the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). This is the virus responsible for cold sores.

For many people it stays dormant. However, research suggests that when it is reactivated repeatedly, it contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation in the brain.

Large population studies have found:

🔬 People with HSV infections may have a higher risk of developing dementia
📊 Recurrent viral activation may contribute to ongoing neuroinflammation
💊 In some studies, antiviral treatments has been associated with reduced dementia risk

This does not mean HSV causes Alzheimer’s on its own. Dementia is multifactorial.

Working with a naturopath to support your immune system and take anti-viral herbs is one way you could reduce your risk.

BLOOD PRESSURE AND BRAIN PROTECTION

High blood pressure is not just a heart issue.

When blood pressure is elevated, particularly when pulse pressure is widened, the delicate blood vessels in the brain are exposed to increased stress.

Over time this may:

❤️ Damage small cerebral blood vessels
⚠️ Increase blood–brain barrier permeability
🔥 Contribute to neuroinflammation
📉 Increase risk of vascular cognitive impairment

Research consistently shows that midlife hypertension significantly increases the risk of later-life cognitive decline.

INFLAMMATION IS THE COMMON THREAD

There is one theme that connects many risk factors for brain health and overall health and that is inflammation.🔥

Years of:

🛋️ Physical inactivity
😣 Chronic stress
🌙 Poor sleep
🚪 Social isolation
🍟 Ultra-processed diets

Can all contribute to systemic inflammation, including in the brain.

Chronic stress raises cortisol levels, which can affect the hippocampus — the region responsible for memory consolidation.

SLEEP plays a critical role too. During deep sleep, your glymphatic system clears metabolic waste from the brain, including beta-amyloid proteins.

Sleep is not indulgent. It is when your brain goes into maintenance mode. 👷

HEARING LOSS AND DEMENTIA RISK
One of the strongest modifiable risk factors for dementia identified in major international reviews is *untreated* hearing loss.

Midlife hearing impairment has been associated with increased dementia risk, possibly due to:

👂 Reduced cognitive stimulation
🧠 Increased mental effort to process sound
🤝 Social withdrawal
📈 Accelerated brain changes in auditory regions

Don't put off that hearing test any longer!

INSULIN RESISTANCE AND METABOLIC HEALTH
Metabolic health and brain health are closely linked.

Insulin resistance has been associated with:

🍬 Increased amyloid deposition
🧬 Tau protein pathology
⚡ Reduced brain glucose utilisation
📊 Higher risk of cognitive decline

The brain relies on efficient glucose metabolism. Even in non-diabetic individuals, impaired metabolic health in midlife can increase long-term dementia risk.

The good news is that insulin sensitivity (and many other risk factors) can be improved through:

🚶 Regular movement - even a 20-minute walk after dinner
🏋️ Resistance or strength training
🥗 Whole-food, fibre-rich meals
🍳 Including protein with meals to stabilise blood sugar
🧘 Stress reduction strategies

This is not about biohacking, extreme diets or complicated protocols.
Just simple, consistent healthy habits.

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY.
AND IT’S NEVER TOO LATE.

Cognitive decline develops gradually.

And brain protection does too.

You do not need perfection.
You do not need expensive bio-hacking.
You need steady, sustainable changes.

🌿 Walk daily
🛏️ Prioritise quality sleep
🩺 Check your blood pressure
🥦 Support metabolic health
💊 Address recurrent infections
👥 Maintain meaningful social connection

Start small. Build momentum. Stay consistent.

Your future thoughtful, switched-on self will thank you.

🔍 FINDING THE ROOT CAUSE
You’ve probably heard us naturopaths talk about finding the root cause of symptoms. That’s because naturopathy isn’t about handing out a quick fix to make something go away. 💊

A painkiller might help an occasional headache, but if headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, hormonal symptoms, anxiety, or inflammation keep returning, then something deeper is usually going on. ⚠️

Rather than masking symptoms, we investigate.
We ask questions. 🤓
We look for patterns. 🧩
We explore what else is happening in your body and your life. 🌿

And we keep going until we understand why those symptoms are there. 🎯

THE ROOT CAUSE IS RARELY JUST ONE THING

If you have ongoing or recurring health issues it's probably not caused by one thing alone.

There are usually layers, and complex, interconnected systems influencing one another over time.... Symptoms that show up now may have been building up for months or years before you really had to pay attention. ⏳

At the deepest level for many people, the common thread is the nervous system.⚡

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND STRESS

Your nervous system constantly scans your internal and external environment and adjusts your hormones, digestion, immunity, circulation, energy, and mood to keep you safe. It tries!

From a nervous system perspective:
stress = danger 🚨

The stress detected might be emotional, physical, environmental, or relational — and whether you think it’s serious doesn’t matter if your nervous system has registered it as a threat. 😳🤯

Stress isn’t just about what is happening - it’s about how your body responds.

And that response is shaped by:
🌿 Early life experiences
💔 Past trauma or long-term pressure
🧬 Genetics and family patterns
🥱 Current lifestyle, relationships, workload, sleep, and health
🤓 Your beliefs and perceptions

This is why two people can experience the same situation and have completely different physical responses. 🙃🙂

WHY “JUST REDUCE YOUR STRESS” ISN’T ALWAYS REALISTIC 😒

You’re often told to slow down, reduce stress, or change your environment.

But real life doesn’t always allow that.

You can’t instantly:
❌ Change your job
❌ Remove family responsibilities
❌ Undo past experiences
❌ Pause life while your body recovers ⏰

And big changes often come with their own stress.

So when you can’t change the environment, changing how your nervous system responds becomes essential. 🔑

HOW WE SUPPORT THIS AT PNMC 🦋

If you’re feeling stuck with symptoms despite “doing all the right things”, this is where a more holistic approach matters. ✨

At PNMC, we support your health through:

NERVOUS SYSTEM TRAINING - meditation and breathwork 🧘

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE - herbal support 🌱

ACUPUNCTURE & FSM THERAPY - energetic rebalancing

Each approach works together to support regulation, resilience, and recovery, rather than just masking the symptoms.

Read the full blog over on our website to find out how the nervous system is often the missing piece. 📖
