Jaw clicking is much more common than most people think.
Research shows that around 30–50% of the population experience jaw joint sounds, even when they have no pain at all.
In many cases the click simply occurs when a small cartilage disc inside the jaw joint moves slightly and then slips back into place as the mouth opens.
This movement can create a sound, but it does not necessarily mean the joint is damaged.
In fact, many people have clicking for years without any symptoms.
What matters much more is how the muscles and nervous system behave around the joint.
In persistent TMJ pain we often see:
• muscle guarding around the jaw
• altered movement patterns
• increased nervous system sensitivity
• stress load on the system
That is why modern TMJ management focuses less on “fixing the click” and more on calming the system, reducing guarding, and restoring comfortable movement.
If your jaw clicks but is not painful, it is usually not something to worry about.
Understanding how the system works is the first step to taking control of it.
