SOS Therapy and Learning Centre

SOS Therapy and Learning Centre SOS Therapy and Learning Centre provides speech pathology services using movement and play based learning. We are a child and family centred practice.

At SOS Therapy and Learning Centre we recognise that each client has an individual learning style, which needs to be respected. Children learn best when they are in a positive environment that is fun, nurturing, safe and allows them to maintain a calm and alert level of arousal in order to learn. We are a child and family centred practice, and believe in supporting parents with information, resources, advice and techniques to enable them to assist and encourage their child’s development at home. Our mission is to identify and support each client’s individual learning style, to foster a lifelong love of learning. We don’t expect children to fit into a particular pattern of learning, rather we provide the flexibility to bend to meet the individual needs of the child. We provide assessment and intervention for both children and adults with speech, language and literacy difficulties, including:
- Acquired and developmental language disorders
- Articulation/speech sound difficulties
- Stuttering
- Voice Impairments
- Delayed language development
- Auditory processing
- Literacy difficulties
- Comprehension
- Intellectual Disability
- Learning difficulties

Fantastic opportunity to access the evidence based Triple P program for parents of children with disability (it is designed to address issues for ages babies to teenagers). This has been made available for free by the Australian Government and is an excellent opportunity for parents to access learning and supports for their child or children’s specific areas of need. I encourage parents to sign up to access the online learning modules that are self-paced to fit with your busy family schedule. Meet ’The Decoding Dragon’ to keep the ‘Guessing Monster’ away! An excellent resource to combat the use of these cute looking ‘Clue Cards’ with animals and strategies to help early readers but the ‘Clues’ all encourage children to guess the word eg. “Eagle Eye: Look at the picture for clues to what the word might be”. This is a very popular resource being used in Western Australian primary schools, but each of the 7 strategies on this particular version of the ‘Clue Cards’ encourage children to guess words rather than use the ONE Strategy they actually need - Decode the Word. Say the sounds as you point to them with your finger and blend those sounds together all the way to the end of the word, break longer words into syllables. * Please share this post with everyone who works in education with both the ‘Clue Cards’ that shouldn’t be used in teaching literacy plus the ‘Decoding Dragon’ with evidence based reading strategies that don’t rely on guessing.
* Links to websites with evidence based structured synthetic phonics resources, resources using the Science of Reading will be provided in the comment section below.

It’s Autism Awareness month and this short, relevant video highlights some of WA’s legal requirements to provide accommodations for people with visible and hidden disabilities, including Autism, allowing equal opportunity access in recreation, work, education and interest clubs. Not providing accommodations is disability discrimination and open to legal prosecution. Sussex Street Law, Disability Discrimination Unit have excellent resources (links are in the video description). Hopefully this helps raise public awareness and provides support, the intended purpose of this post. SOS Therapy and Learning Centre.

I am a sucker for infographics, visual supports are always useful, across the lifespan. This infographic style support is heavily text based but perfect for parents to put on the fridge 😊 Clare Catmore, SOS Principal Speech Pathologist.

Thanks to EdpsychEd for this fantastic image.

This is an excellent resource for helping with back yo school organisation from Perth Kids Hub and previously shared by Maggie Dent. It’s called ‘Back to School Toolkit; For parents of kids and teens who learn, think and develop differently’. So many useful resources you can still tap in to prior to school resuming tomorrow. Thanks for this excellent and thoughtful resource perthkidshub.com.au 😊Clare Catmore, SOS Therapy and Learning Centre.

I love that this was in the top posts for 2021! I was first drawn to the idea of ‘unschooling’ with one of my 3 sons in 2013. Excellent choice for a top post and it encourages so much hope!
