BALANCED HEALTH CLINIC is a new private multidisciplinary community mental healthcare clinic in the Edith Cowan University precinct in Joondalup, Perth. It is the brainchild of Dr Peter Melvill-Smith (Psychiatrist) and Dr Anne Dale (Clinical Psychologist). Dr Peter Melvill-Smith has 22 years experience as a qualified psychiatrist. This new multidisciplinary mental health service has the capacity to provide comprehensive mental health related assessments and interventions. This will be a veritable “one stop shop” for assessments and intervention via numerous mental health and other professionals, with intra-referral capacity, with the patient’s general practitioner coordinating the referrals accordingly. We are very excited about this concept, which embraces the philosophy that:
‘Effective mental health interventions must address the whole person in a holistic way, assisting the person to understand the interaction of not only all their own mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing, but that the interaction of their health providers is essential to a healing, growing and developing pathway’. The practice partners strongly support and advocate the multidisciplinary approach to assessment and care, and have been fortunate in securing the services of highly skilled mental health practitioners. Balanced Health Clinic will offer the expertise of psychiatrists, psychologists, a pain specialist, an occupational therapist, mental health nurses, a social worker and a speech therapist, with a view to including further specializations as we evolve. Interventions and therapy include the following: individual, child, couple, family and group. The ethos of balancing optimal general and global personal health, within the domains of psychological, physical, social and spiritual health remains the services’ priority. The capacity to provide educational forums for mental health and other health practitioners and assistance via referrals to dieticians/nutritionists and personal trainers for physical activity/exercise programs will be a further development with time.
