Filtered water isn’t trendy. It’s foundational.

For most people, tap water is safe.
But for some - especially those with elevated copper levels, filtration can make a real difference.

Copper enters drinking water primarily from household plumbing, not the water source itself. Older copper pipes, acidic water, or water sitting in pipes overnight can increase copper leaching.

Excess copper may contribute to:
• Headaches
• Nausea or gut upset
• Fatigue
• Mood changes
• Worsening oxidative stress

In susceptible individuals including those with impaired copper metabolism - lowering exposure matters.

Filtration can reduce heavy metals including copper, lead, and chlorine by-products.

Why this matters for longevity:

💧 Lower heavy metal burden → less oxidative stress
🧠 Better neurological resilience
🫀 Reduced cumulative toxic load
🧬 Supports detoxification pathways

Simple tip if you haven’t got a filter:
Run the tap for 30–60 seconds in the morning before drinking, especially if water has been sitting in pipes overnight. Don’t forget this applies for the water for your kettle and cooking water.

Clean water isn’t extreme.
It’s preventative medicine.

Sleep is not a luxury. It’s a biological necessity for longevity.

Wearables have changed the game. Devices like Oura Ring, Apple Watch, WHOOP, and Fitbit don’t just count steps - they track sleep duration, efficiency, resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, and overnight temperature trends. Data that you used to previously need a sleep study to record.

Why does that matter?

Because patterns tell stories.

📉 Falling HRV + rising resting heart rate → possible overtraining, stress, illness brewing
🌡️ Temperature shifts → early infection or hormonal fluctuations
⏰ Fragmented sleep → alcohol, late meals, sleep apnoea, or cortisol dysregulation
📊 Chronic sleep debt → higher cardiometabolic risk, cognitive decline, and mood disorders

When patients can see their data, behaviour change becomes easier. Earlier dinners. Less alcohol. Consistent bedtimes. Darker rooms. Cooler environments.

Objective feedback drives better habits.

Sleep is where:
✔️ Memory consolidates
✔️ Glymphatic clearance occurs
✔️ Growth hormone peaks
✔️ Insulin sensitivity resets
✔️ Inflammation reduces

If you care about muscle, metabolic health, brain ageing, or hormonal balance - protect your sleep like it’s medicine.

Because it is.

Desk snack upgrade ✔️

Chia + protein powder = 200 calories pudding = fibre, omega-3s, and muscle support in one easy jar. Here I’ve grabbed a 220g Vegemite jar to mix a scoop of vanilla protein powder and a couple of tablespoons of chia with water.

✔️ 10g fibre
✔️ 5g Plant omega-3 (ALA)
✔️ 28g protein for satiety + muscle
✔️ Stable blood sugars
✔️ Zero excuses

Prep it the night before.
Grab it from the fridge.
Eat it between patients, calls, or admin.

Small habits. Stronger metabolism. Better ageing.

📘 Currently reading: Unbreakable A Woman’s Guide to Aging with Power by Vonda Wright.

Dr Wright isn’t just another “longevity guru.” She’s a double board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, academic researcher, and former Director of the Performance and Research Initiative for Masters Athletes. Her entire career has centred on musculoskeletal science, performance, and the biology of ageing.

In a world where other US based longevity experts have ended up in very questionable headlines, it’s refreshing to read advice grounded in clinical medicine, peer-reviewed science, and decades of surgical and performance experience.

The core message?
Muscle is medicine.
Bone is banked strength.
Midlife is not decline - it’s a recalibration.

For women navigating perimenopause and menopause, this book reinforces what we see in clinic every day: resistance training, protein adequacy, metabolic health, and intentional loading are non-negotiables if we want independence and health at 80.

Strength is not vanity.
It’s strategy.

Healthcare works best when doctors have time to care properly.

At The Age Less Clinic & General Practice, we’ve built a model around longer consultations, continuity of care, and thoughtful, evidence-based medicine. That benefits everyone, patients and doctors alike.

For patients, it means being heard, understood, and supported with a proactive, preventative approach to long-term health.

For GPs, it means practising medicine with time to think, investigate, and build meaningful relationships, not rushing through appointments.

Our focus on preventative health, chronic disease management, and whole-person care creates a clinical environment where quality comes before volume.

If you’re a patient seeking more considered care, or a GP looking for a practice that aligns with your values, we’d welcome a conversation.

Why do food sensitivities increase in perimenopause & menopause?

It’s not random. It’s physiology.

As oestrogen fluctuates and declines:

• Mast cells become more reactive → more histamine release
• Gut barrier integrity weakens
• Microbiome diversity shifts
• Sleep and cortisol dysregulation amplify inflammation

The result?

Foods you’ve eaten for years suddenly cause:
– Bloating
– Flushing
– Headaches
– Itching
– “Wine intolerance”
– Histamine-type reactions

This is often immune reactivity, not a new true IgE allergy.

The tolerance window narrows.

Instead of endless elimination:
✔️ Support gut health
✔️ Improve sleep
✔️ Reduce stress load
✔️ Optimise hormones

The body changes so the strategy needs to change.

Why use micronised progesterone vaginally (off-label)?

Same molecule. Different route. Different experience.

Oral Prometrium goes through the liver → produces neuroactive metabolites → can cause sedation, brain fog, mood shifts.

Intravaginal use:

✔️ Largely bypasses first-pass liver metabolism
✔️ Lower systemic metabolite load
✔️ Higher local endometrial exposure
✔️ Often better tolerated in progesterone-sensitive women

Not first-line. Not casual.
But in the right patient, it can be a game-changer.

Looking for a different way to practise medicine?

At The Age Less Clinic & General Practice, we’ve built a model around longer consultations, continuity of care, and thoughtful, evidence-based medicine, not high patient turnover.

Our GPs work in a supportive environment with strong nursing and administrative support, allowing more time for clinical reasoning, preventative care, and complex case management.

We’re designed for doctors who value quality over volume and want to build meaningful, long-term patient relationships.

Confidential conversations welcome.

Resistant starches are one of the most underrated gut nutrients 👇🏽

When you cook and then cool foods like rice, quinoa and steel cut oats, part of the starch changes structure and becomes resistant starch.

That means:
✔️ It resists digestion in the small intestine
✔️ Feeds beneficial gut bacteria
✔️ Increases butyrate production (anti-inflammatory + colon protective)
✔️ Improves insulin sensitivity
✔️ Helps keep you fuller for longer

✨ My prep hack:

Pressure cook steel cut oats.
Cool in the fridge overnight.
Portion into containers.

Now you’ve increased resistant starch naturally.

Then I mix in:
• Protein powder
• Collagen peptides
• Extra fibre

And use it as a base for:
🥣 Porridge
🥤 Smoothies
🥣 Soups
🌱 Chia pudding

One batch = multiple gut-friendly, protein-balanced meals for the week.

Feed your microbiome and it feeds you back.

Your brain doesn’t always know the difference between a “real” smile and a “fake” one.

Functional MRI studies show that even intentionally lifting the corners of your mouth can activate brain regions linked to dopamine and serotonin release and our so-called “happy hormones.”

Facial feedback works both ways.
We don’t just smile because we feel good…
We can feel better because we smile.

So if today feels heavy, try this:
Crack a small smile. Hold it for 10–20 seconds. Breathe.

Fake it till you make it?
Neuroscience says there’s truth in that!

Low effort. Zero cost.
High potential upside.
Just do it!
