This post is for my Wellness Centre people to again explain how I set exercise criteria with regards to body conditioning etc. I verbalise this during appointments along with following up with videos for you to visualise for your own dogs/set up etc. along with your programs
When I watch a dog move out for me prior to being on the table I am looking at basic confirmation of the dog: length of upper arm, lay of shoulder, topline etc. I am looking at foot timing, reach and drive and handling of the dog under lead. I get a sense of whether a person understands handling to movement and can adjust handling to dog.
I also look at general body condition such as depth and balance of muscle over the body , coat condition along with compensatory and loading patterns and how they play out on the move or just in a stand/sit etc.
This gives me the information I need to figure out treatment plan and further more exercise criteria plan for you to follow on with.
Often I will start with mapping out a general exercise plan which will cover aerobic exercise, general.strength and conditioning such as swimming/hydro along with functional movement exercises which will also include frequency /duration etc.
Once this routine has been established Iwill then start to include exercises to work further on functional movement such as how to set up different cavalletti exercise circuits and start to introduce fit discs etc. Again this will involve conditioning equipment paired with functional movement. At this stage I will again progress with foundation stability exercises based around: glute stability, pelvic stability, oblique stability, spinal stability, scapula stability etc.
If a body is presenting with compensatory or loading patterns I would follow this path.
Once a body is back to balance of functional movement without compensatory or loading patterns then I will start to include exercises such as balance work and introduce peanut, donut or bonsue ball.
Compensatory and loading patterns are whole different ball game when working with a body and treatment plan. They play a huge part in how I would approach moving a body into progress.
Enjoy!
