A 2020 human clinical study investigated how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) affects two major hallmarks of aging: telomere length and senescent (aging) cells.
The Study
Researchers enrolled 35 healthy adults aged 64+ and treated them with 60 hyperbaric oxygen sessions over ~90 days. Blood samples were analyzed throughout the study to measure changes in immune cell aging markers.
Key Findings
After the HBOT protocol, researchers observed:
🔹 Telomere length increased by ~20–37% in several immune cell types
🔹 Senescent immune cells decreased by ~11–37%
🔹 Changes were detected after just 3 months of treatment
These findings suggest HBOT may stimulate biological pathways involved in cell repair and regeneration.
Study Limitations
While promising, this research also has several limitations:
🔹 Small sample size
🔹 No randomized control group for comparison
🔹 Short follow-up period after treatment
This study provides preliminary evidence that hyperbaric oxygen therapy may affect biological markers of aging. However, larger, longer-term studies are still needed to understand its clinical impact fully.
