What do we mean by metabolic health?

Dr Mark Mellor explains this simply: metabolic health is about how well your body processes and uses energy. It reflects how your blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, and body composition work together to support long term health.
When metabolic health is compromised, the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease increases, often long before symptoms appear.

At CMS, we focus on identifying these risks early and addressing the underlying drivers, not just individual numbers in isolation.

Dr Mark shares why understanding metabolic health matters, and how a whole person approach can make a meaningful difference.

If you are concerned about your metabolic health, we’d love to meet with you to support you in your journey. Book an appointment with Dr Mark Mellor online now at cardiometabolicservices.net.au

👉Did you know this advanced scan is included in your initial Weight Management Consult?

As part of your first appointment at CMS, we include a Body Composition Analysis to give a clearer picture of your health beyond the number on the scale.

Unlike standard scales, body composition analysis looks at what your weight is made up of, including fat mass, muscle mass, and body water. This helps us understand where changes may be needed and how best to support your health goals.

The test is quick, non-invasive, and takes less than a minute. Results are available immediately and can help guide your nutrition, exercise, or rehabilitation plan. Because excess body fat and low muscle mass are linked with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, having this information early can be incredibly valuable.

If you’d like these insights without a full consultation, Body Composition Analysis appointments can also be booked on their own for $45.

🗓️Appointments are available at our Nedlands clinic and can be booked online now.

Today we share one of our most frequently asked questions: “Will you just tell me to eat less and exercise more?” And our answer to that is no.

For decades, weight loss advice has centred around eating less and exercising more. While that can work short term, many people find their body adapts over time, leading to weight regain. This cycle is frustrating, exhausting, and very common, through no fault of your own.

👉At CMS, we understand obesity as a chronic disease, not a failure of willpower. Our team has experience managing obesity alongside related conditions such as diabetes, fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease.

Lasting change doesn’t come from extreme restriction or pushing harder. It comes from personalised treatment that works with your biology, your health, and your life.

Our approach focuses on safe, sustainable weight loss strategies designed to support long term health and meaningful outcomes.

If you’ve felt stuck, discouraged, or blamed in the past, you’re not alone and you don’t have to do this the hard way.

What is a FibroScan?

A FibroScan is a simple ultrasound test that gives your doctor a clearer picture of your liver health. It’s often used when blood tests don’t tell the full story, or when there’s a reason to take a closer look.

The scan measures two important things: how stiff the liver is, which can point to scarring or fibrosis, and how much fat is stored in the liver. Together, these results help identify conditions like fatty liver disease and assess whether there’s early liver damage.

Your doctor may recommend a FibroScan if you have fatty liver disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, hepatitis, alcohol related liver concerns, or an indeterminate FIB 4 blood result.

It can also help monitor liver health over time and reduce the need for more invasive testing.

FibroScan appointments are available for $150. A referral is required for this test.

Do you need a referral to book an appointment at CMS?📄
Short answer: No.

👉You can book directly with us, no referral is required.
We, however, do accept referrals and regularly work alongside specialists who want to optimise their patient’s health ahead of surgery or treatment, but self referrals are always welcome.

Our Initial Weight Management Consultation (your 1-hour appointment) includes a comprehensive clinical assessment. The initial assessment is a key step in understanding your health needs and future risk. We take a personalised, comprehensive approach using validated tools to measure cardiometabolic health, body composition, strength, sleep, and mental wellbeing. This helps us build a clear picture of your overall health and tailor care accordingly.

Treatment is tailored to your goals and includes support for diet, exercise, sleep, and mental health—guided by evidence-based clinical guidelines.

We focus on improving overall health, not just weight, and manage related conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease through a team of medical, dietetic, exercise, and psychology experts. Our approach empowers long-term change and supports sustainable, meaningful health improvements.

If you or someone in your family has high cholesterol, it’s worth looking a little deeper.

Some cholesterol conditions are inherited and can significantly increase cardiovascular risk if left unmanaged. At CMS, our Lipid Management team supports people with familial hypercholesterolaemia, elevated lipoprotein (a), severe hypertriglyceridaemia, statin intolerance, and other complex lipid disorders.

We take the time to understand your personal and family history, assess your cardiovascular risk, and guide appropriate testing, including genetic testing and cascade screening where indicated.

If cholesterol has been an ongoing concern, or runs in your family, our team is here to help you understand what it means and what steps come next.

Why expertise matters in weight management🩺

Obesity is a complex medical condition influenced by factors such as genetics, hormones, metabolism, and mental wellbeing. Because of this, effective care requires more than quick fixes or one size fits all solutions.

Weight management that supports long term health involves careful assessment, personalised guidance, and support for related health conditions, not just a focus on the number on the scale.

At CMS, weight management is approached with this complexity in mind. Care is evidence based, tailored to the individual, and supported by a team of medical and allied health practitioners working together.

If you are looking for weight management support that is sustainable, we’d love to hear from you.
