💜 ARE YOU PREGNANT?
SPOTLIGHT on our FitRight Pregnancy (Bump&Me) exercise classes – get in quick! 💜
Our Bump&Me studio and strength circuit group exercise classes start the week of March 9th.
SWIPE for the timetable! Our Monday Strength Circuit is nearly SOLD OUT (Tuesday class also available) and our Thursday studio class is getting popular (this sold out last course)
• Studio classes in Ardross
• Strength circuit classes at our FitRight Boutique HQ clinic in Applecross village

💜 Why exercise in pregnancy matters
Regular exercise supports physical and mental wellbeing, helps manage common pregnancy aches and pains, and builds strength and fitness for birth, motherhood and recovery.
At FitRight, we support women to work towards the recommended 150 minutes/week of moderate-intensity cardio, 2x resistance sessions per week, plus regular mobility and stretching. Our studio and strength circuit classes are a safe, supportive way to build towards this.

💜 All FitRight pregnancy classes include:
✔️ Pelvic floor exercises
✔️ Mobility and stretching
✔️ Cardio training (high intensity doesn’t have to be high impact)
✔️ Resistance exercises for arms and legs with functional movements
✔️ Safe, effective core exercise progressions
✔️ Women’s health education from physiotherapist instructors

All classes are run by physios with extra training in women's health and are therefore health-fund rebatable.
Book via the link in our bio or direct here: https://fitrightwomenshealth.au/pregnancy-exercise/
Initial assessment required.

What do I wish more women knew about a Caesarean birth? 💜

I wish more women felt empowered with knowledge about how to optimise healing in the early weeks after a Caesarean. Those first 6 weeks are incredibly important for how scar tissue forms and settles long term 💜

Here are some key things to focus on during that early recovery period:

💜 Use the pain relief offered to you
You don’t need to push through high levels of pain. Taking pain medication as prescribed helps keep pain manageable so you can move and breathe without excessive guarding or tension in your body. This support is especially important in the early days and weeks after a Caesarean.

💜 Support or “splint” the wound
If you feel a cough or sneeze coming on, for example, apply gentle but firm pressure over your lower abdomen. Using a pillow or folded towel can help support the wound and reduce strain.

💜 Introduce gentle touch early
From very early on, gentle touching over the dressing helps your brain recognise the incision site as normal tissue. Light touch, stroking, and gentle pressure allow the nerve endings to experience normal sensation and can help prevent increased sensitivity over time 💜

💜 Progress to scar massage once healed
Once the scar is fully healed and dressings are no longer needed, gentle direct touch and massage can begin. Some women prefer to wait until after their 6 week medical review, which is completely okay. Use a plain, unscented, water based moisturiser rather than an oil based product.

💜 Prioritise rest
Gentle walks and stretches are encouraged, but where possible avoid long periods of walking, housework, or shopping in the early weeks. Rest is a vital part of healing especially in the first 2 weeks 💜

If you’d like to learn more about Caesarean recovery including how to prepare your family and friends, and how to safely progress walking, stretching, resistance, and core exercise, head to the link in our profile to read our blogs or visit our website 💜

Why do we wait 6 weeks to follow up new mums? 💜
And… do we actually need to?

For years, postnatal care has centred around a medical check up at 6 weeks, to get the ‘all clear’ for rehabilitation and return to exercise to even begin. But that timeline is largely traditional rather than personalised or evidence based.

Is it because babies have their immunisations at 6 weeks, so it feels logical to check in with mum at the same time?
Is it because lochia (postnatal bleeding) usually settles by then, allowing for a vaginal pelvic floor examination?
Is it because scar tissue is generally healed enough by 6 weeks to tolerate more load?

Possibly a combination of all of the above 💜

But what we see time and time again at FitRight Women’s Health is that there is so much we can do to support earlier that can make the first weeks of recovery more comfortable and set women up for a smoother return to movement and exercise.

💜 You don’t have to wait 6 weeks if you don’t want to
At FitRight Women’s Health, you can choose to see our Women’s Health Physiotherapists and/or our Women’s Health GPs earlier than 6 weeks if you feel ready and comfortable.

What could a Women's Health Physio do at a 2–4 week postnatal appointment? 💜

• While a vaginal examination would wait until bleeding has finished, a perineal pelvic floor assessment can still be performed to check muscle activation and relaxation, scar healing, and pelvic floor support during activities like coughing
• Begin early abdominal muscle rehabilitation
• Introduce functional leg exercises that can be done even while holding your baby or using a carrier
• Teach early scar desensitisation and gentle stretches for a Caesarean scar
• Identify concerns with bladder control, bowel control, or pain early and start treatment sooner rather than later

💜 The key message
You don’t need to wait for the 6 week mark to seek support with your postnatal recovery. If you have concerns, discomfort, or simply want to be proactive, earlier care is an option.

And just as importantly, if waiting longer feels right for you, that’s completely okay too 💜

Senior Pelvic Health Physio Cat took her kids to Bounce recently 💜 She’d missed her usual run that morning, so decided to jump in and join them 🤸‍♀️

When she mentioned this to her clients and other mum friends, she was met with surprise - ‘you got on the trampolines??’ 💜 which got her thinking. That reaction inspired her to write about Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) in our weekly email. This post is a snapshot from that newsletter. These photos are from Cat’s Bounce outing.

So… what is Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)?
SUI is the leakage of urine during physical effort, such as coughing, sneezing, running, or jumping on a trampoline.

It occurs when the pressure inside the bladder becomes greater than the pressure the urethra (wee pipe) can manage. High impact movements like bouncing, landing, sprinting, or sudden changes in direction increase abdominal pressure, making leakage or urgency more likely.

SUI is very common 💜 particularly
• With high impact activities
• During the perinatal and post partum period
• As we age

Why trampolines and play centres can trigger leaks:
Activities like trampolining and sports courts involve
• Repetitive impact
• Sudden load through the core and pelvic floor
• Rapid changes in movement

All of these can challenge bladder control, especially if the pelvic floor isn’t functioning optimally 💜

What can help when playing with your kids?

Short term strategies:
• Empty your bladder before starting
• Wear high absorbency underwear protection
• Limit coffee or other caffeine beforehand
• Modify your movements with softer landings and shorter or slower jumps
• Wearing a maxi tampon can provide extra urethral support

Long term solutions:
• See a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist for individualised guidance and pelvic floor exercises
• Learn how to manage abdominal pressure differently
• Build global strength through your legs and core
• In some cases, a vaginal support pessary can help decrease leaks

Pelvic health physiotherapy can be one of the most effective treatments for SUI 💜. Book an appointment with one of our pelvic health physiotherapists- we'd love to help you!

An appointment with Dr Miranda (Mondays) or Dr Brodie (Fridays) offers so much more than a standard GP consult. It offers:

💜 Time to deep dive into any aspect of women’s health that matters to you, including perimenopause, vulval health, contraception, pre and postnatal care, osteoporosis and more.

💜 Initial appointments are 45 minutes as standard, so you’ll never feel rushed.

💜 You can expect to leave feeling genuinely seen and heard by a GP who is passionate about women’s health and continually upskills in this space.

💜 A truly holistic approach, with the unique advantage of being surrounded by our team of pelvic health physios, musculoskeletal physios, a sexologist, dietitian and lactation consultants, as well as our network of women’s exercise classes. If Dr Miranda or Dr Brodie feels additional support would help, it’s easily accessible in one place.

Telehealth appointments are also available.

For more information or to book, head to the link in our bio and select Women’s GP Consults. You can also visit the FitRight website directly, or reach out via email at hello@fitright.au

👋🏻 Hi there! We’re Taryn & Jess, proud co-owners of FitRight HQ in Applecross, plus our satellite clinic in West Perth 💜

We wanted to re-introduce ourselves to anyone new here (thank you to our new followers for joining our community), and say a big THANK YOU to those who’ve been with us from the very beginning (your support means the world)!

A little about us and the FitRight journey...We’ve been friends since our uni days in the early 2000s, and we’re now living out the dream we talked about back then, creating a true one stop shop where women can access the highest quality women’s health and exercise services.

The FitRight brand, along with our signature physio-led exercise classes from pregnancy, to postnatal and beyond, has been running since 2014 across various locations in Perth. In mid-2021, we opened FitRight HQ, our boutique clinic in the leafy Applecross Village. Here, we’re lucky to have an incredible team of pelvic health and musculoskeletal physios, a sexologist, two women’s health GPs and (very soon! 🥳) a dietitian. lactation consultants are also housed at FitRight HQ- we're so lucky to have them!

Last year, we also launched our satellite clinic in West Perth out of .womenshealth, where two of our FitRight pelvic health and musculoskeletal physios work alongside specialist doctors on Mondays and Fridays.

What sets us apart is our integrated approach, offering individual, small group and large group physio-led exercise classes that form a key part of many clients’ holistic management plans. Our focus is always on long-term success, not quick fixes. We also run clinical exercise classes at our HQ clinic.

At the heart of everything we do is empowering women to be proactive about their pelvic and overall health, and ensuring every woman leaves feeling heard, understood, and genuinely cared for.

We can’t wait to be your go-to team for women’s health and exercise for many years to come! 🫶🏻

Why might caesarean recoveries be harder than others? In particular, is there a difference in recovery between an elective caesarean and an emergency caesarean? Everyone's experience is different- but here are some reasons why the healing process might be quicker and easier after an elective caesarean (ElCS) compared to an emergency caesarean (EmCS)

💜 the time taken by the surgeon is likely to be different. With an El CS, the surgeon can take their time with each of the layers before reaching the baby. With an Em CS, sometimes urgency is needed & getting to the baby quickly is the priority, which may cause more tissue injury.

💜 the physical state that the Mum is in going into surgery – if you have an El CS you’re probably coming off a full night of sleep & have eaten well in the 24 hours beforehand. Sometimes an Em CS will be done after 2 or 3 days of minimal rest and food intake.

💜 baby’s position in the uterus – if you’ve progressed through Labour, the baby is likely to be further down into your pelvis and therefore may take more time and effort to be born with an Em CS.

💜 the psychological & emotional state of the mother – pain perception & wound healing can be affected by the way you feel about the Labour and birth.

This is not to say that Em CS are always going to have poor healing – most of the time wounds heal really well! The purpose of spreading this message is that if your recovery post op after an Em CS seems harder than your friend who had an El CS – that’s to be expected. Don’t be hard on yourself and take the time to allow your body to heal.

And some El CS have complications, & some recoveries after Em CS are a breeze – Everyone. Is. Different. 🥰
