💙Saturday morning appointments available💙 We know how busy the week is..and how difficult it can be to take time out for yourself, even if it’s really needed-during the working week💼. That’s why we offer Sat morning appointments. 8-12. Which leaves the rest of your weekend free to do…other weekend stuff!! 😁

ABOUT MELANOMA MARCH

Melanoma March began as a community fundraising event in 2012 when Manly local, James Economides, wanted to raise awareness and funds in honour of his son, Michael, who passed away from melanoma in 2008. Michael was just 20-years-old.

Melanoma March is Melanoma Institute Australia’s major annual community fundraising campaign. Each Melanoma March brings together melanoma patients, their families, and local communities to raise awareness and funds for research to reach our goal of zero deaths from melanoma.

We’re marching so everyone survives.

Melanoma March is saving lives.

Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world. Melanoma is the most common cancer affecting 20 to 39-year-old Australians and one Aussie is diagnosed with the disease every 30 minutes. It is estimated 1300 Australians will die from melanoma this year.

Recent advances in treatment pioneered by MIA clinicians and researchers have tripled the life expectancy for advanced melanoma patients. MIA’s ultimate mission is zero deaths from melanoma – a goal we believe we can reach this decade.

But we can’t do it alone.

Take steps to help save lives.

On Rare Disease Day, we want to highlight acral, mucosal, pediatric, and uveal melanoma listed by Melanoma Research Alliance. These rare melanoma subtypes represent an area of profound unmet medical need.

We know far less about these subtypes, including what causes them, how they progress, and how to effectively treat them. In addition, patients with these rare melanomas are often diagnosed later, at more advanced stages of disease, when treating melanoma becomes far more difficult.

On Rare Disease Day, we want to highlight acral, mucosal, pediatric, and uveal melanoma.

It’s clear we have our work cut out for us. No patient with melanoma – including those with a rare subtype – should ever feel left behind. We hope that by funding the best possible science, fostering collaboration across institutions, and by bringing patients, advocates, and researchers together we can continue to move the field forward to better understand, treat, and ultimately cure rare melanomas.

🌟My 1st instalment on SUNBURN 🥵

🎈I am at the nannupmusicfestival 🎉this wknd so it seems an appropriate time to tell you some interesting facts about ! 😎

🥵Sunburn is an acute inflammatory reaction that follows excessive exposure of the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UVR).☢️

The principal injury responsible for sunburn is direct damage to DNA by UVR, resulting in skin cell death. Sunburn inflammation causes dilation of blood vessel in the skin resulting in the characteristic redness. 🥵This redness usually happens 3-4 hrs after exposure and peaks 24 hrs later.

With repeated exposure to UVR, the skin thickens, and the radiation suppresses immunity which might contribute to nonmelanoma skin cancer and certain infections like cold sores. 💙

* Hydration 💦- UVR causes more redness in moist skin than in dry skin

* Environment - Radiation is 80% reflected by snow ❄️and ice but only 15% reflected by sand 🏝️

* Ozone coverage - Recuced levels of ozone filter out less UV-Australia and NZ for example!

* Altitude 🏔️- Thinner atmosphere at higher altitudes absorbs less UVR-so you are at higher risk at higher altitude!

* Latitude - Exposure is greater nearer the equator🌍-ie Australia!

* Time of day⏱️- UVR exposure is greatest from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, when the sun is highest in the sky

* Season - In locations outside the tropics, UVR is much greater in summer than in winter

* Cloud cover ☁️- Light clouds attenuate UVR by 10%, which may not be enough to protect from 🥵

🌟The risk of sunburn is increased in regions that are closer to the equator and that are higher in altitude. 🌟

All reasons why Skin Checks are so important in Australia!! 🇦🇺
