Assessments done right at bedside allow us to see how the swallow is working, and recommend the safest food and drink options - without needing to leave the facility or home.

In this case, it meant getting back to regular foods from pureed solids safely, and enjoying meals again 🙏🏼

Mobile Swallowing Assessments Now Available in Kelowna 📢

Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is an instrumental swallowing assessment that allows clinicians to view swallowing in real time using a small flexible camera.

This assessment can help determine:
• Whether food or liquid is entering the airway
• Which textures are safest
• How to make your swallowing most efficient for nutrition and hydration
• Any swallowing therapy or compensatory strategies that would be helpful

FEES can be completed in our clinic, in the community or in long-term care, allowing patients to access instrumental swallowing assessment without needing to travel to hospital.

Lexa brings a wealth of experience working with both adults and children, with a strong clinical focus in swallowing, cognitive-communication, and head & neck lymphedema management.

She is certified in manual lymphatic drainage for cancer survivors and is deeply passionate about delivering person-centred, goal-driven care that supports function, comfort, and quality of life.

✨️NEW SERVICE✨️

We now provide specialized lymphedema therapy for individuals following head and neck cancer treatment, including surgery and radiation.

Swelling of the face, neck, and throat can impact swallowing, voice, comfort, and appearance.

Treatment focuses on reducing swelling through manual lymphatic drainage, targeted exercises, and self-management strategies, supporting both functional recovery and overall comfort.

Modified diets are meant to protect — not restrict.

In long-term care, many seniors are placed on texture-modified diets or thickened fluids without ongoing swallow reassessment. While many professionals support mealtime safety, only Speech Language Pathologists are trained to diagnose dysphagia and provide targeted swallowing treatment.

When used longer than needed, modified diets can impact hydration, nutrition, and quality of life.

Swallowing changes over time — diet recommendations should too.

✨️FEES now available in Kelowna and the Okanagan✨️

I’m excited to share that Orchard Speech Pathology is now offering Kelowna's first mobile Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) for adults.

FEES is an instrumental swallowing assessment that uses a small, flexible camera to allow real-time visualization of swallowing anatomy and function, at bedside or in clinic.

It can be especially helpful for individuals with complex dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), neurological conditions, head and neck cancer, or those in long-term care or with limited mobility.

This service is designed to improve timely access to instrumental swallowing assessments while reducing barriers to care in our community.

Referrals and inquiries welcome.
