It doesn’t always look like progress.

Some days feel slow, maybe quiet, or uncertain. Like nothing is really moving forward.

But change doesn’t always show up in big ways.

Sometimes it looks like getting through the day.
Sometimes it’s choosing something different than you did before.
Sometimes it’s just staying.

Growth is still happening, even when it’s hard to see.

Recovery often starts the same way. Quiet, steady, and real.

We are so grateful for the support behind our Run Club and the people who help make it possible.

A big thank you to Amy Nerbas for the time, care, and leadership poured into this program. The Run Club has created connection, confidence, and community for so many of our clients on their recovery journey.

Support like this makes a lasting impact, and we are proud to have partners who believe in the work we do.

Thank you for helping us keep moving forward.

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the incredible impact of our volunteers, starting with Amy Nerbas from our Lloydminster operations.

Amy played a vital role in coordinating the Thorpe Recovery Centre’s Run Club in Lloydminster, a program that supported more than 350 clients on their recovery journey. The Run Club is designed to be accessible to everyone, helping participants build confidence and work toward a final 5km run.

Thank you, Amy, for championing well-being and community connection through your volunteer leadership.

Understanding Recovery Language

Language matters, especially when we talk about addiction, healing, and recovery. Many of the terms used in treatment settings are meaningful, but they are not always clearly understood outside of those spaces.

Here are a few words you may hear often in recovery:

Recovery
Recovery is an ongoing process of healing and growth. It involves learning new ways to manage life, building healthier relationships, and developing tools to support long-term wellbeing.

Triggers
Triggers are situations, emotions, people, or environments that can bring up cravings or thoughts about substance use. Learning to recognize and manage triggers is an important part of recovery.

Relapse Prevention
Relapse prevention focuses on identifying risks early and building strategies to respond to challenges in healthy ways. It includes coping skills, support networks, and planning for difficult moments.

Support Systems
Recovery is not something people are expected to do alone. Support systems can include family, peers, counsellors, community groups, and others who provide encouragement, accountability, and understanding.

Understanding these terms helps create clearer conversations about addiction and recovery for individuals, families, and the broader community.

Recovery is built through learning, reflection, and community.

Each day at Thorpe includes structured programming where clients explore topics such as addiction education, relapse prevention, communication, and emotional regulation.

These conversations and tools help build the foundation for lasting recovery beyond treatment.

“Thorpe has absolutely changed my life.”

Dustin came to Thorpe last fall. Today, he’s sober, back to work, has a place of his own, and has rebuilt connections with the people who matter most to him.

Stories like this are why we do what we do every day.

Thank you, Dustin, for sharing your experience.

If you or someone you care about is thinking about getting help, our team is here to talk through the next step.

A gentle reminder on the importance of getting outside. ☀️

It might seem small, but morning light and a simple walk can do more for your recovery than you think. Getting outside early helps reset your body clock, improve sleep, boost your mood, and bring a sense of calm and clarity to your day.

In recovery, those little habits matter. Fresh air, movement, and sunlight can help reduce stress, ease anxiety, and give your mind a break from overthinking.

Whether you walk alone or with someone, both are powerful.
• Solo walks give you space to think, breathe, and reconnect with yourself
• Walking with a friend brings connection, accountability, and reminds you you’re not doing this alone

You don’t need to do anything big. Just simply step outside, take a breath, and start your day with intention.
