Understanding Recovery Language
Language matters, especially when we talk about addiction, healing, and recovery. Many of the terms used in treatment settings are meaningful, but they are not always clearly understood outside of those spaces.
Here are a few words you may hear often in recovery:
Recovery
Recovery is an ongoing process of healing and growth. It involves learning new ways to manage life, building healthier relationships, and developing tools to support long-term wellbeing.
Triggers
Triggers are situations, emotions, people, or environments that can bring up cravings or thoughts about substance use. Learning to recognize and manage triggers is an important part of recovery.
Relapse Prevention
Relapse prevention focuses on identifying risks early and building strategies to respond to challenges in healthy ways. It includes coping skills, support networks, and planning for difficult moments.
Support Systems
Recovery is not something people are expected to do alone. Support systems can include family, peers, counsellors, community groups, and others who provide encouragement, accountability, and understanding.
Understanding these terms helps create clearer conversations about addiction and recovery for individuals, families, and the broader community.
