Ever seen a penguin slip n’ slide in therapy? 🐧💦 It’s one of our favourite ways to sneak in sensory regulation, strength, and FUN, all at once!

We set this up by placing a parachute or sheet over a gymnastics wedge, creating the ultimate slide experience. Kids climb up, slide down like penguins, and crash into a big bean bag at the bottom for that oh-so-satisfying deep pressure input. 💪

This activity is amazing for:
✨ Vestibular input – building balance and body awareness through movement
✨ Proprioceptive input – providing calming, grounding “heavy work” through the crash landing
✨ Motor planning – sequencing steps like climb ➡️ slide ➡️ crash
✨ Executive functioning – adding turn-taking, impulsivity games, safety awareness, or following multi-step directions helps kids build self-control, flexible thinking, and regulation skills

We use this setup a lot in our group sessions because it’s high-energy, motivating, and builds essential sensory and self-regulation skills, all through play!

🛏️✨ Pillows aren’t just for resting, in the clinic, they’re one of our most versatile therapy tools!

Here’s how we turn everyday items into meaningful movement, regulation, and strength-building activities 👇

🔹 Balance Pods
Standing or stepping on pillows challenges stability, activating core + ankle muscles for better balance and coordination.

🔹 Proprioceptive “Squishes”
Applying gentle pressure with pillows gives deep touch input that can help calm the nervous system and support body awareness.

🔹 Pillow Race
Kids drag themselves forward while sitting their knees on a pillow case, like an inchworm! This strengthens the core, improves endurance, and sneaks in some fun abdominal activation.

🔹 Vestibular Input Ride
Sitting on a pillow and being pulled along the floor provides movement through space, great for motor planning, vestibular processing, and just plain FUN.

✨ Sometimes the best therapy tools are already around us, it’s all about how we use them!

➡️ Follow for more creative pediatric therapy ideas, play-based strategies, and behind-the-scenes clinic fun!

🦴 October 19th was  Pediatric Bone & Joint Day!

Let’s talk about your child’s bones and joints for a second, because they do so much more than just help kids move. 💪

Healthy bones and joints give your child the foundation for playing, running, sitting upright in class, writing, climbing, and doing all the things they love. When there’s pain, stiffness, or weakness, it can make everyday movement feel hard, and that can affect confidence, coordination, and participation.

That’s where physiotherapy and occupational therapy come in.
💚 Our PTs focus on strength, balance, posture and managing pain, helping kids move freely and comfortably.
💚 Our OTs help kids use those strong bodies for play, school, and daily routines, while teaching strategies to protect joints and reduce pain.
Together, they help kids move with comfort, confidence, and joy. 🌟

💬 Want to support your childs bone and joint health? Let’s chat! Book an assessment with our pediatric therapy team, we’ll help you understand what’s going on and how to support your child’s growth.

Last week, we talked about Sensory Processing Disorder and Autism with our partners at Mothercraft Ottawa. Did you know that your child can have Sensory Processing Disorder and not be Autistic?
Sensory processing is the ability to process information received through our senses to help us navigate our environment. When the information is not well processed, the child can feel overwhelmed and/or shut down as his body does not know how to react in a certain situation.
Here are some examples: dislikes getting hair cut or brushed and will cry or scream to avoid the situation, poor coordination and often bumps into things, cover his ears, cries or screams when in an environment with loud sounds (ie: vacuum, alarms, hair drier, etc.).
For many, the root cause of the behaviour is often sensory overload or poor processing.
It is important to find the underlying cause of the behaviour so we can provide tools to help them!
Did you know occupational therapy and physiotherapy can help? Don’t know which one your child needs?
Call us or take our QUIZ (https://www.ontheball.ca/)on our website and we will be happy to help you!

Why we started “On the Ball”?
Liane, co-owner of On the Ball, began looking into pediatric physiotherapy after working in physiotherapy with adults for years. She went on to learn all she could and travelled all over Canada and the States to acquire tools and knowledge from amazing pediatric instructors. She met Heather Chan, pediatric occupational therapist, at a primitive reflex integration course and a partnership was born. Their vision was to work together and help kiddos achieve their full potential! Occupational therapy and Physiotherapy compliment each other well in the clinical setting which resulted in happy kiddos and families achieving their goals.

Pourquoi avons-nous commencé « On the Ball » ?

01/05/2022

Despite the announcements this week about several closures in Ontario, our clinic remains open for both in-clinic OT and Physio, virtual sessions, phone consults, and parent coaching. We have had some cancellations due to children having to isolate, so we are working our way through our OT waitlist and taking new clients for both Physio and OT. Our services fall under the category of essential health care services and we continue to provide the highest quality of cleanliness to keep everyone healthy.

Holiday activity #3, cookie exchange! 🍪 Let's face it, baking in preparation for the holidays is usually a big part of the holidays for a lot of families! It's also a big part of our holiday cheer at On the Ball. The staff made cookies for each of us to swap and take home for the holidays! Such a fun and tasty activity! 😋
