Did you know that the number of babies dying from Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Canada and the USA has fallen dramatically, from over 10,000 deaths per year to less than 200? And that it’s thanks to research going back to the 70s?
With research on pulmonary surfactant that began in 1972, Dr. Fred Possmayer and his collaborators developed a treatment to help premature infants breathe. 🫁

🍩❤️ A churro machine may have just sparked a major breakthrough in heart surgery.
At the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Dr. Marcelo Muñoz was inspired by how dough forms tubes when making churros.
Now, his team is developing a device to “print” new blood vessels inside the body, offering new hope for patients who can’t undergo traditional bypass surgery.

Imagine being prescribed music as pain medication. New research from McGill University suggests this could become a reality one day.
Drs. Roy and Palmer found that music matching the tempo of a patient’s internal rhythm has the potential to relieve chronic pain. Music as medicine is a low-cost intervention with no negative side effects.
This discovery could be a big relief for the approximately 20% of Canadians experiencing chronic pain.

A new discovery could help people stay stronger, longer! 🦴💪❤️
With support from CIHR, scientists found that treatments originally meant for bones can also help repair muscles and protect the heart.
In lab studies, it reversed muscle damage and prevented heart problems in mice with muscular dystrophy.
This could lead to new treatments that help older adults and people with muscle-wasting diseases stay stronger, more independent, and less at risk of falls and frailty.
