💡While many people are use regular exercise to stay in shape, what often goes unrecognized is that regular exercise also offers benefits for your brain. Research shows that regardless of your age or fitness level, making the time to exercise provides some important mental health benefits!

✍ These benefits have been shown to occur from walking as little as 30 minutes/day – three time/week. You don’t even have to do all 30 minutes at the same time – you can break it up into three x 10 minute walks.

🥳 The great thing about the “brain” benefits of exercise is they don’t take nearly as long to achieve as the physical benefits. It can take months - years of dedicated training to develop an efficient heart or to strengthen your core. On the other hand, some of the mental health benefits such as improved mood can occur almost immediately after exercising.

💃 Next time you are having trouble motivating yourself to do a workout – try reminding your brain of all you will gain whenever you train.

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. Richard Backus, CASEM Member and recipient of CASEM’s Medal of Service.

Richard’s contributions to both CASEM and the broader field of sport and exercise medicine in Canada are immeasurable. His passion and dedication as a team physician for Canada’s national rowing program and at the Olympics, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games left a lasting impact. His legacy of compassion, mentorship, and excellence will continue to inspire generations of physicians, colleagues, and athletes.

Our thoughts are with his wife Kathleen, his children and the entire Backus family. Dr. Richard Backus will be deeply missed.
