🛡️ It's Shingles Awareness Week (February 24 – March 2) — and this one is important.
1 in 3 Canadians will develop shingles in their lifetime. If you've ever had chickenpox, the virus that caused it is still living dormant in your nervous system — and it can reactivate as shingles at any time, particularly after age 50.
Shingles isn't just a rash. It can cause severe pain, vision complications, and a condition called postherpetic neuralgia — nerve pain that lingers for months or even years after the infection resolves. For many patients, that ongoing pain is the most disruptive part.
The good news? There's a vaccine.
Shingrix® is the recombinant zoster vaccine available in Canada and recommended for:
All adults 50 and older
Immunocompromised adults 18 and older
In Ontario, Shingrix is publicly funded for adults aged 65 to 70. Outside that window, it's available privately — and many drug plans provide coverage. Our pharmacists can help you understand your eligibility and benefits.
At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists don't just administer vaccines — they provide complete, evidence-based counselling to make sure you're protected. That means reviewing your health history, explaining what to expect from the vaccine, coordinating with your physician when needed, and making sure you come back for that critical second dose.
Have questions about shingles or the Shingrix vaccine? Stop by or give us a call — we're here for your whole family.
