If you are parenting through foster care, adoption, kinship care, or customary care, you stepped into a story already in motion.

You may be holding court dates, case workers, school meetings, birth family dynamics, identity questions, trauma responses, and your own exhaustion, all at once.

You may deeply love this child and still feel overwhelmed.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing.
It means you’re human.

At Connected Roots Therapy, we believe permanency work is relational work. And caregivers need a space that is just for them.

Jean offers virtual parent support across Ontario and is accepting new clients. She offers support for caregivers navigating the emotional and relational complexities of permanency.

You do not have to carry the complexity alone.

Staying matters.
And being supported while you stay matters too. 🌸

When your teen seems checked out about their diabetes, it can feel scary.

You might wonder:
Is this defiance?
Is this depression?
Are they just being a teen?

Often, it’s burnout.

Teens with Type 1 diabetes are making dozens of health decisions every single day — while also navigating identity, independence, friendships, and pressure to fit in.

That’s a lot for a developing nervous system.

In our latest blog, we break down:
✔️ What diabetes distress looks like
✔️ How to tell burnout from typical teen moodiness
✔️ Ways to reduce shame and conflict at home
✔️ When to consider mental health support

If you’re parenting a teen with Type 1 in Ontario, this one is for you.

Sometimes teens push away the people they need the most — not because they don’t care, but because they’re overwhelmed and don’t know how to say it.

Therapy gives teens a space to talk without pressure, feel understood, and learn how to cope with big emotions and stress.

If your teen is struggling, they don’t have to carry it alone. 🤍

✨Priya at Connected Roots work with teens virtually and in person in Ottawa. Email is at admin@connectedroots.ca to connect, or go to our website at the link in bio for more info.

Your teen isn’t lazy.

When teens start sleeping more, avoiding school, or disappearing into screens…
it’s often not defiance — it’s overwhelm.

Adolescence is a nervous system workout.
Their brain is rewiring, emotions are louder, social pressure is heavier, and their body is asking for rest and escape the only ways it knows how.

What can look like:
• “no motivation”
• irritability
• shutdown
• procrastination
• staying in bed
• gaming for hours

Can actually be:
→ anxiety
→ depression
→ burnout
→ school stress
→ fear of failure
→ emotional overload

Punishment rarely fixes overwhelm.
Understanding does.

Start with curiosity instead of correction:
“Hey… I’ve noticed things seem harder lately. I’m here with you.”

You don’t have to figure it out alone — and neither do they.

Family Day can bring warmth, laughter, and closeness.
It can also bring stress, conflict, or complicated feelings.

Both can be true.

If connection feels easy today, soak it in.
If it feels hard, that doesn’t mean you’re failing.

Many families are carrying more than what’s visible:
• Big emotions
• Behaviour challenges
• Trauma histories
• Chronic stress
• Neurodivergence
• Illness or medical overwhelm

Connection isn’t built through perfection.
It’s built through safety, repair, and small consistent moments.

Try one of these gentle connection shifts today.
Not all of them. Just one.

🌿 Small shifts build stronger roots.

If your family feels stuck in cycles of conflict, shutdown, or overwhelm, you don’t have to navigate that alone.

💜 Connected Roots Therapy supports families in rebuilding safety, strengthening attachment, and moving through hard seasons together.

Some jobs are just jobs.
This one is an experience. 🌲💙

Sara had the opportunity to work at Camp Huronda, owned and operated by Diabetes Canada, and it was one of the most meaningful two weeks of clinical work she’s done.

This role blends youth mental health, diabetes support, and interdisciplinary teamwork — all in a beautiful camp setting on Lake Waseosa in Huntsville, ON.

You’re supporting kids (7–15) living with type 1 diabetes while also being available to staff. It’s short-term, solution-focused, collaborative, and incredibly impactful. You see growth in real time — confidence, independence, connection.

If you’re an MSW who loves working with youth and enjoys stepping outside of traditional office walls, this is such a special opportunity.

Sara is happy to chat with anyone who’s curious about what it’s like, just DM her here.

Find out more at link in bio or DM Connected Roots for the job posting information. You can also find out more at

There’s something about a quiet morning in the forest 🌲

Before the emails, the appointments, and the mental to-do list, your nervous system remembers what it feels like to just be.

Gentle movement.
Feet on the ground.
Cold air in your lungs.
Light through the trees.

Movement doesn’t have to be a workout to be healing. A slow walk, stretching your arms, noticing the sounds around you, these are all ways your body processes stress and comes back into regulation. Nature gives your brain fewer demands and your body more safety.

If your mind feels loud lately, try stepping outside before you try pushing harder.

At Connected Roots, we often talk about how healing isn’t only cognitive, it’s embodied. Sometimes therapy starts with learning how to listen to your body again.

Take a walk today. No goal. No tracking. Just notice.

🙌Adoption is built on love and it also comes with layers many families are never taught to navigate.

❤️‍🩹Big feelings. Identity questions.
Grief that shows up sideways.
Behaviours that don’t respond to “typical” parenting tools.

That’s where adoption-competent therapy matters.

🌱An adoption-competent therapist understands:
• the impact of early separation and loss
• how trauma can surface years later
• why behaviours are communication
• why parents need support too — not just children

It’s about creating safety, connection, and understanding for the whole family.

📝Our newest blog explores how adoption-competent therapy can support your family, and what makes it different from general therapy.

✨ Looking for support?
Jean Skelton, Registered Psychotherapist at Connected Roots Therapy, offers adoption-competent support for parents, children, and families — virtually across Ontario.

Caring for a child or teen who has experienced trauma can feel all-consuming.
You’re holding their emotions, behaviours, appointments—and often putting your own needs last.

If you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or quietly wondering how much longer you can keep going… this post is for you 🤍

In our latest blog, we talk about:
• Why your exhaustion makes sense
• How trauma impacts the whole family system
• Small, compassionate ways to care for yourself while caring for them
• When support for you matters just as much as support for your child

You don’t have to do this alone—and you don’t have to be “strong” all the time.
