Top 12 Tips for Cold Weather Health & Immunity, # 8 of 12

Sleep & rest more.

This may be the single most important & overlooked tip. Why? Because we see it everywhere! We all know we need more sleep, but how do we get it? Where do we find the time?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, winter is the ultimate Yin season, characterized by darkness, coldness & stillness. Mother Nature literally throws a blanket of night & snow on us all: the birds, the bees, the flowers & the trees. Everyone's energy is drawn inwards to nourish our roots. This is the season for slowing down, resting, reflecting & replenishment. In other words, sleep!!!

Unfortunately, our modern lives & jobs don't honour these seasonal shifts. We all still have to get up in the morning & go to work. But you can refocus some of your time to be more Yin, especially before bed, to set yourself up for deep, restorative sleep.

The biggest culprit for sleep problems is our phone. We bring them everywhere! One second it's on the counter of our local coffee shop & the next it's snuggled up under our pillow in bed. "But it's my alarm!" we rationalize. And then we proceed to use our "alarm" to scroll for three hours, assaulting our tender Yin state with the Yang energy of headlines, drama & blue light.

Such is not the way of balance. Reclaim your pre-sleep routine from your phone!

If you can, incorporate some tools from our previous Winter Tips such as rolling on a yoga ball, massaging your upper back or soaking in a bathtub or foot bath. You can also journal, read a book or meditate. Ritualizing this moment brings intention & awareness back to it. Sprinkle your favourite calming essential oil on your pillowcase. Fluff up your blankets & pillows. Luxuriate in the opportunity to rest.

Don't feel guilty napping in the winter, either. This is the perfect season to do so. The body does its most effective self-healing during rest & sleep. If you give it more Yin time during this season, it will give you more energy & health when you need it.

Top 12 Tips for Cold Weather Health & Immunity, # 2 of 12

Eat warm, cooked foods, including soups & stews.

There's nothing like coming in from the bitter cold to a delicious cooked meal that warms you from the inside out!

Eating warm, cooked foods in the wintertime may seem like common sense, but as we explored in our first Winter Health Tip, our access to out-of-season foods has confused this natural inclination.

This is the season to lean into nourishing proteins, root vegetables & warming spices that are prepared in nutrient dense and ultra-digestible formats, like soups, stews, curries, chilis, congees, etc.

Warming foods in Chinese Medicine range from sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, lamb, chicken & lentils to oats, millet, brown rice, walnuts & sesame seeds. A simple Google Search of "Warm Foods in Chinese Medicine" can help you identify which foods to bring centre stage this winter.

A little bit of spice is good, particularly ginger, garlic & cinnamon. Other warming spices include cloves, turmeric, black pepper & star anise. These are nostalgic combinations, often already found in traditional holiday cooking, from stuffing to gingerbread cookies to spiced bone broths, even in your Oat Chai Latte!

Also, if your sinuses or head feel congested from the cold, then chili peppers & spring onions can help open the sinuses & disperse the cold-damp.

Stay tuned for more Cold Weather Health Tips, & let us know in the comments your favourite warm winter meals.

๐ŸŒฟ Acupuncture & TCM for Hypertension ๐Ÿ’†โ€โ™‚๏ธโœจ
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is often called the โ€œsilent killerโ€ because it can go unnoticed until serious complications arise
๐Ÿ”ฌ Physiological View: High blood pressure strains the heart, arteries, and organs, increasing the risk of stroke and heart disease. Stress, poor diet, and inactivity contribute to its development
๐ŸŒฟ TCM View: Hypertension is often linked to Liver Yang Rising, Kidney Yin Deficiency, or Phlegm-Damp Accumulation, which can cause headaches, dizziness, irritability, or fluid retention
๐Ÿ’†โ€โ™€๏ธ How Acupuncture Helps:
โœ” Regulates Blood Flow & Lowers Stress โ€“ Acupuncture helps dilate blood vessels, reducing pressure and improving circulation
โœ” Balances the Nervous System โ€“ Stimulates the parasympathetic system, lowering heart rate and stress hormones
โœ” Reduces Inflammation โ€“ Supports better vascular health, preventing long-term damage
๐ŸŒ€ 3 TCM Self-Care Practices for Hypertension
1๏ธโƒฃ Acupressure on LI 11 (Quchi) โ€“ Located on the outer elbow, massaging this point can help lower blood pressure by reducing heat and tension in the body
2๏ธโƒฃ Drink Chrysanthemum & Hawthorn Tea โ€“ Supports heart health, reduces inflammation, and calms Liver Yang
3๏ธโƒฃ Daily Breathwork (Qi Gong or Deep Breathing) โ€“ Slows heart rate, improves oxygenation, and reduces stress levels
