What we resist, will persist.
Avoidance often strengthens the very pain we try to escape. When we suppress difficult emotions or traumatic memories, they don’t disappear—they manifest in anxiety, depression, or physical symptoms, demanding our attention in other ways. The brain perceives avoidance as confirmation that these experiences are dangerous, reinforcing fear and distress. Healing begins when we allow ourselves to acknowledge, process, and integrate our experiences rather than fighting against them. Facing our pain with compassion doesn’t mean reliving it, but rather transforming our relationship with it so that it no longer controls us.
