Before COVID-19, the average Canadian spent nearly 11 hours per day looking at screens. 66% of Canadians are now spending more time in front of their screens than before the pandemic. An estimated 50-90% of all computer users experience dry eye symptoms associated with excessive screen time.
Are you experiencing tired, dry and painful eyes? It may be dry eye related to increased screen time.
Increased screen time can impact you in several ways, including lower blink rate, increased demand on the eyes from small text and close working distance, and higher frequency of incomplete blinks.
Stay ahead of screen time-induced dry eyes with computer glasses and/or lubricating drops or artificial tears.

Children who have trouble seeing can encounter difficulties at school because their motor skills, social development, attention span and ability to read, write and learn may be affected. In some cases, a child can even be misdiagnosed with having behavioral or learning disabilities, because they are unable to see or keep focus, when all they require is a pair of eyeglasses.
Many parents believe that their child would let them know if they were having trouble seeing, but children often can’t identify they have a vision problem because they don’t know what normal vision looks like.
The Ontario Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their first eye exam at six months, another at age three, and then every 12 months thereafter, or as recommended by the optometrist.

Tip Tuesday: Know your family history
Many eye diseases cluster in families, so you should know your family's history of eye disease because you may be at increased risk.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Protective Eyewear!
Wearing safety eyewear in your home, workshop, garage, yard, or workplace can protect your eyes from injury and damage. Your eyes can sustain significant injury from airborne chemicals, dust, and debris, so it’s important to protect yourself from potential harm.
You should also wear protective glasses if you are into sports like ice hockey, lacrosse or squash/racquetball.
