November is lung cancer awareness month.

🫁 While about 72% of lung cancer cases are due to smoking to***co, it is still possible to get lung cancer if you have never smoked. Second-hand smoke, radon, air pollutants and family genetics may all play a role.

🫁 Common symptoms of lung cancer include pain in the chest, shoulder, back or arms; recurrent lung infections; coughing up blood; hoarseness or changing voice; loss of appetite. See your doctor for screening if you experience any of those persistent symptoms or if you feel worried.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Did you know that:

💕This year, approximately 28 600 women and 270 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

💕It is estimated that 1 in 8 Canadian women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime and 1 in 34 will die from it.

💕The most common symptom of ductal carcinoma is a firm or hard lump that feels very different from the rest of the breast. Lobular carcinoma does not form a lump, it feels more like the tissue in the breast is getting thicker or harder.

This past weekend, many team members of Extend Pharmacy were proud to participate in the 5K CIBC Run for the Cure event. We ran and walked in honour of the many brave and inspiring patients we have the privilege of working with every day.

With the first day of summer upon us, let us reflect on the many incredible health benefits of getting outside:

🌳Help reduce feelings of stress or anger.
🌞Help you take time out and feel more relaxed.
🌳It can improve your physical health.
🌞Help you get vitamin D.
🌳Help you meet and get to know new people.
🌞Connects you to your local community.

There are many free outdoor groups available in local communities, including clubs for walking, running, cycling, etc.

Don't forget to apply your sunscreen generously!

With all this beautiful, sunny weather we have been experiencing, it can be easy to head outside and forget about one important thing: sunscreen! Sunscreen has been proven to decrease your risk of skin cancers and skin precancers.

Apply generously to all exposed skin, especially your nose, ears, neck, hands, feet, and lips. Reapply at least every two hours, or more frequently if you are swimming or sweating.

The weekend of April 13th, 2023, Extend Pharmacy was excited to attend the Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology (CAPhO) Conference 2023, held in Toronto, Ontario. This year’s theme was “Innovation and Collaboration: Looking Forward.” Together as oncology pharmacists, we share one common goal: to provide the best care for our patients.

As we met in person and virtually, we discussed our learnings throughout the pandemic and in our new post-pandemic landscape so that together, we continuously evolve and improve to provide the highest quality of care to our Cancer Patients.
One of Extend’s incredible pharmacists, Joy Rashid, presented at the CAPhO Conference, sharing her expertise in acute hematology care.

The weekend left us feeling inspired and encouraged to continue shaping a strong future for Oncology Pharmacy!
