Common Myths About AAC & The Truth Behind Them
1. Myth: AAC will stop my child from talking.
Truth: Research shows the opposite. AAC often supports and encourages speech development by reducing frustration and giving children a model of communication.
2. Myth: My child needs to master prerequisites (like pointing, matching, or understanding all words) before AAC.
Truth: No prerequisites are required. We don’t wait for a child to “prove” themselves before giving them speech opportunities — the same goes for AAC. Children learn language through use.
3. Myth: AAC is a last resort.
Truth: AAC is not about “giving up.” It’s about opening up communication as early as possible, reducing frustration, and supporting growth alongside speech and language therapy.
