Dundas Manor LTC
Another one of my Long Term Care projects is now into the ground. This has been a great project to work on with Wendy Brawley at Hobin Architecture since the original programming and design started in 2015. Construction is underway on the new 128 - Dundas Manor Long Term Care in Wi******er, Ontario. The client group under the direction of Administrator Susan Poirier were very receptive to our new progressive directions and embraced innovation in Long Term Care design. PFS did the Food Service, Laundry and Waste Management Design on this project.

This has been a great project to work on the last two years and now construction begins on the new 128 - bed Rockwood Terrace long-term care home in Durham | Grey County. The design team headed by Kasian Architecture and the client, Jennifer Cornell, Grey County's Director of Long-Term Care and Senior Services along with Executive Director Karen Krause were truly receptive to new innovative directions in Long Term Care.....and great to work with.

Over the last 10 years, I am thankful to have had the opportunity to help improve the food offerings for our senior living environments for the future. This was done in conjunction with our gerontology and long-term care consultants to bring about a culture change in Long Term Care. We have done this through breaking down traditional healthcare foodservice barriers and by designing the facilities and operational programs to meet the changes required. It provides for all levels of foodservice dietary offerings from traditional foods to dysphagia and texture modified foods, all the while serving it in a diverse, a la carte menu offering for every meal just like you would find in any restaurant. The was done while in full compliance with the Ministry of Long-Term Care food cost and labour models. Our seniors deserve that effort and respect when it comes to their daily meal offerings.

Planned Foodservice Solutions has several projects using our new model that are in various stages of completion. PFS has carried out the food service functional programing, design development through the construction documents to construction administration. This is done in collaboration with the architectural & engineering design team and the client.

In all cases, this new model was selected only after an intense cooking and tasting food demonstration for each client was carried out and found to be so superior to the current traditional offerings.

We currently have 18 projects under development across Ontario including Southern Ontario, Central Ontario and Eastern Ontario with several additional projects pending.

Another year in the books. 27 trips around the sun with my Professional designation. Only 9 Professionals still practicing in Canada.......was over 20 Professionals 6 years ago. No wonder I am having trouble retiring!!!

PRINCIPAL PROFILE AND HISTORY
Doug Feltmate has over 40 years’ experience in the industry and founded Designed Food Systems 34 years ago. He attended the Algonquin’s School of Hospitality & Hotel Management.

Doug takes a hands-on approach to all projects and every aspect of the firm. His methods of caring for client’s needs large and small, has led to a reputation within the industry for being thorough, precise and progressive and never being afraid of venturing into new directions. His combination of vision and strategic thinking has led DFS & PFS to innovative changes in the food service environment. He likes to look forward only using the past as a reference.

Since being founded 34 years ago, DFS & PFS has completed over 2000 projects in 35 countries, covering all aspects of the hospitality industry.

He has a long history in sports, retail food services, entertainment and hotel complexes as well as employee/student dining facilities. He is also particularly skilled in working with the project team to help achieve LEED compliance through innovative solutions related to food service facility design and operations. This expertise forms a critical component in the ground-breaking design of the House of Commons Production Kitchen and the Ottawa Convention Centre Projects.

Clients include major universities across Canada and the USA and companies such as Dell, Ericsson, Ciena, Hyatt Hotels, Sun Hotels, Kerzner Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Fairmont Hotels, Canada Post, RCMP, the Canadian Armed Forces and the Government of Canada to name a few. He is experienced with both design build construction as well as architect led projects and is renowned for his collaborative approach leading to an on-time, on-budget project through innovative technologies and sustainable knowledge-based solutions. His practice is currently busy providing innovative solutions to Seniors & Long-Term Care food service programs to enhance the efficiencies, food qualities and service levels for the residents.
In 2013, Doug sold DFS to WSP Global, one of the worlds largest multi-disciplinary engineering firms. He stayed on as their national practice director until 2016. Doug then started PFS where he now works as a sole practitioner consultant. He lives in Ottawa with his wife and two daughters.

The Butler did it !!! Thank you John Butler for doing this food demo for my clients at Shalom Village Long Term Care. This method will greatly improve the quality of food for our Long Term Care residents.

Several years in the works. Glad to be part of this innovation LTC solution. We developed a completely new food services model that is now part of the planning process in another 12 LTC homes in Ontario.

When a new long-term care home opened its doors in Arnprior this month, it was a project eight years in the making.
