PRINCIPAL PROFILE AND HISTORY
Doug Feltmate has over 40 years’ experience in the industry and founded Designed Food Systems 34 years ago. He attended the Algonquin’s School of Hospitality & Hotel Management.
Doug takes a hands-on approach to all projects and every aspect of the firm. His methods of caring for client’s needs large and small, has led to a reputation within the industry for being thorough, precise and progressive and never being afraid of venturing into new directions. His combination of vision and strategic thinking has led DFS & PFS to innovative changes in the food service environment. He likes to look forward only using the past as a reference.
Since being founded 34 years ago, DFS & PFS has completed over 2000 projects in 35 countries, covering all aspects of the hospitality industry.
He has a long history in sports, retail food services, entertainment and hotel complexes as well as employee/student dining facilities. He is also particularly skilled in working with the project team to help achieve LEED compliance through innovative solutions related to food service facility design and operations. This expertise forms a critical component in the ground-breaking design of the House of Commons Production Kitchen and the Ottawa Convention Centre Projects.
Clients include major universities across Canada and the USA and companies such as Dell, Ericsson, Ciena, Hyatt Hotels, Sun Hotels, Kerzner Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Fairmont Hotels, Canada Post, RCMP, the Canadian Armed Forces and the Government of Canada to name a few. He is experienced with both design build construction as well as architect led projects and is renowned for his collaborative approach leading to an on-time, on-budget project through innovative technologies and sustainable knowledge-based solutions. His practice is currently busy providing innovative solutions to Seniors & Long-Term Care food service programs to enhance the efficiencies, food qualities and service levels for the residents.
In 2013, Doug sold DFS to WSP Global, one of the worlds largest multi-disciplinary engineering firms. He stayed on as their national practice director until 2016. Doug then started PFS where he now works as a sole practitioner consultant. He lives in Ottawa with his wife and two daughters.
