CPAR (Canadian Physicians for Aid & Relief) Building health systems capacity and supporting healthy lives in low resourced regions of Africa.

CPAR builds relationships with communities from a foundation of equality and respect. CPAR understands that community members themselves are the experts and that the success of our work stems from our ability to support the processes whereby community members empower themselves to take control of their own and their family’s futures. A healthy community does not simply mean that this community will survive the hardships of tomorrow or the next day – it means that their children’s children will survive and thrive over many years. CPAR’s work is a long term commitment to change in rural Africa which is reflected in the way we build healthy communities. We work with communities to build long-term sustainable solutions as well as the community capacity and ownership that will allow them to endure.

World Children’s Day: Listen to the Future.

This year’s theme is a powerful reminder that children’s voices matter - in classrooms, in communities, and in every space where decisions about their futures are made.

Across our programs, CPAR works to ensure children are not only protected but also empowered to share their perspectives on education, health, climate resilience, and community wellbeing.

Today is World Toilet Day. And while toilets may not trend online, their impact on health, safety, and resilience cannot be overstated.

This year’s theme, “Sanitation in a Changing World,” highlights a pressing reality: Communities already facing droughts, floods, and aging infrastructure are the first to feel the effects of the sanitation crisis. Water sources become contaminated. Families face increased health risks. Children lose access to safe, private, and hygienic facilities.

At CPAR, we continue working with communities across Africa to improve access to water and sanitation. In Malawi, through the Green Schools Network project implemented from July 2024 to May 2025, we have installed three 30,000-litre rainwater harvesting tanks, providing schools with a steady source of water, and built new latrines, enabling over 2000 students to access safe WASH facilities.

Improved sanitation helps strengthen health, learning, and community resilience.

Africa has the highest number of children living in conflict zones - 218 million.

Over 16.2 million children across the continent have been internally displaced by conflict and violence.

Today, on World Day for the Prevention and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Violence, we shine a light on a heartbreaking reality: Children living in conflict are among the most vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and lifelong trauma.

Conflict doesn’t only destroy homes - it shatters safety, stability, and childhood itself.

You can make a difference:
👉 Raise awareness - share information and amplify children's stories.
👉 Support child protection efforts - your engagement helps strengthen safe environments.
👉 Call on policymakers and funders to invest in programs that protect children.

Together, we can work toward a safer world where every child grows up with dignity, protection, and hope.

CPAR’s Project 302 is making sure disadvantaged students don’t learn on empty stomachs.

600 students (283 boys, 317 girls) received reliable daily meals last academic term – far surpassing our target of 400 in response to much higher demand than initial needs assessment has indicated.

The impact?
• Better health outcomes for girls and boys
• Greater focus in class
• Lower absenteeism with increased graduation rates

Every extra meal is more than food — it is a chance for a stronger education and a better future.

With your support and through the financial assistance of Transport Canada’s Commemoration Fund for the Victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy, even more students will get the nourishment they need to thrive.

Today, millions of families face the harsh realities of famine, conflict, and displacement. In war-torn regions, children go hungry. In fragile states, parents struggle to keep their families together.

The 2025 theme for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty calls on us to put the furthest behind first - to build institutions and communities that respect, support, and empower families so they can stay together, thrive, and shape their own futures.

At CPAR, we see what’s possible:

🌱Communities growing their own food and regaining hope
💧 Families gaining access to clean water and healthcare
📚 Children returning to school despite adversity

Every donation, every act of solidarity, every voice raised for justice - it all counts.

Food security isn’t just about what’s on the plate - it’s about health, education, and opportunity.

Through CPAR’s recently completed Freedom to Learn – Phase II project in Malawi, we saw how empowering girls and strengthening communities can create ripple effects far beyond the classroom.

🍎 School gardens helped students grow nutritious foods while learning sustainable farming practices.

💧 WASH initiatives improved access to clean water and hygiene facilities, reducing illness and school absences.

🌸 Menstrual health education and locally made reusable pads helped girls stay in school with confidence and dignity.

Though the project has concluded, its impact continues to grow - in every garden, every classroom, and every young girl who now has the freedom to learn.

Rural women face intersecting barriers — in health, education, and culture. At CPAR, our programs are focused on reducing those gaps:

🌸 Freedom to Learn – Phase II (Malawi): Supporting menstrual health, advancing gender equity, and helping girls stay in school.

🤰 Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (Accessible & Effective Antenatal Care and SRHR in Rural Tanzania): Funded by Global Affairs Canada, this project expands access to comprehensive antenatal care (including ultrasound services), trains healthcare workers to provide respectful, gender-responsive maternal care, engages men as partners in maternal and child health, and works to address harmful practices such as Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM).

We believe rural women deserve more than our gratitude — they deserve systems built to support them. On this day, and every day, we reaffirm our commitment to elevating maternal health, ensuring safe pregnancies, and promoting the agency of women and girls in rural communities.

Our Story

Founded by Canadian doctors in 1984 in response to the famine in Ethiopia, CPAR is a non-profit organization working to build stronger health systems in Sub-Saharan Africa, connecting Canadian doctors and other healthcare professionals, academics and assembled experts with health professionals, vulnerable communities, governments and diverse organizations in Ethiopia, Malawi and Tanzania.

As local health systems deal with poverty, disease, accidents, epidemics, challenged infrastructure and climate change, CPAR’s ‘made in Canada’ approach is helping to improve health system capacity and improve lives for thousands of families and their communities. Through our programming, CPAR supports the achievement of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (link) through programming that:
