The big problem?
Canada’s health systems are fragmented. Many jurisdictions and authorities have their own unique data needs and processes. Also, many health systems tackle similar data and digital health challenges in different ways, resulting in poorer outcomes and quality of care for Canadians.
The solution?
CIHI has been tasked by the Council of Deputy Ministers to lead a pan-Canadian initiative in collaboration with stakeholders across health care systems to drive necessary changes — in policy, practice, legislation and culture — to adopt a stewardship approach to health data across the country. Our Maureen Kelly explains more.

5.7 million Canadian adults did not have a regular health care provider in 2024.
Despite this need, our latest findings indicate that the supply of family physicians has decreased over the past 5 years when accounting for population growth.
In this report, we draw on the most recent pan-Canadian health workforce data from registries, surveys and financial records. Together, this data tells a broader story — that a comprehensive, system-wide and multi-pronged approach will be needed that goes beyond simply increasing supply.

Understanding why health care workers leave their jobs is crucial for effective workforce planning and retention.
Start with our NEW REPORT > The state of the health workforce in Canada, 2024: https://ow.ly/Q8BH50XGp1o
Burnout is a key retention issue. Over half of physicians and 93% of nurses report symptoms of burnout. This trend is also seen among other groups of health care providers — about 80% of pharmacists reported being at risk of burnout and almost one-third said they were likely/somewhat likely to leave their job.

📊A new CIHI report shows 5.7 million Canadians don’t have a primary care provider. So what if people with back or joint pain could skip the wait and see a physiotherapist first?
That’s the idea behind first contact physiotherapy—a trend that is quickly growing in Canada and around the world. Listen as host Avis Favaro chats with Emily Stevenson of the Ontario Physiotherapy Association, and family physician Dr. Alexander Glover, about how this approach gets patients treated faster while easing the load on primary care providers.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides essential information on Canada’s health systems and the health of Canadians.
Health information has become one of society’s most valuable public goods. It informs policy, management, care and research, leading to better, more equitable health outcomes for all Canadians.
CIHI has earned the trust of health systems as the main gatherer, packager and disseminator of information that will address the biggest opportunities: at the moments of truth when policy is formed, when care is delivered and when research is conducted.
To succeed in this role, we have evolved to be both knowledge leaders and service providers — in tune with the health systems’ needs while setting the pace on data privacy, security, accessibility and innovation.
We are facing rapid change from a place of strength, thanks to the expertise, curiosity and integrity of our people, collaborating with stakeholders at every level, throughout Canada’s health systems.
Better data, better decisions, healthier Canadians: powered by a shared sense of purpose, the highest standards of excellence and trust.
