Thank you for sharing your story Tony

Once long long ago in about 2017 ish i started to notice some changes in my life. Having to turn the phone up more, needing to ask for repeats and from time to time missing words. Being the typical stubborn dad I did what most do. Turned up the volume.

Lets fast forward to 2021 and tell you a horror story about the scariest thing in my house. A Q-tip. Like most of you one night I had a shower got out and cleaned my ears with a Q-Tip and went to bed. Only to wake up about an hour later. A trip to the ER confirmed no damage was done but the doctor was concerned about my hearing and was sent for testing. Moderately severe to severe progressive sensorineural hearing loss was the diagnosis.

With almost no supports in my community I found several online but one in particular contained the most amazing resource ever. AnneMarie Langlois. She connected me with CHHA and we started talking. She started the ball rolling on a lot of things and gave me an amazing community.

Thanks to her and the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association I was able participate in the Accessible Navigation to Employment program (ANTE) as well as was able to contribute to the educational program they setup for employers. But the biggest thing I think that CHHA did was empower me to stand up for myself, giving me knowledge and tools that allowed me to advocate for change in my own workplace. I have spoken not once but 3 times internationally as part of Walmart about accessibility in the workplace, I was able to push for better supports and EVEN was able to advocate for American Sign Language programs to be made more financially accessible to associates. I even earned an award for encouraging the use of live transcribe in our workplace as part of our Innovation community at work.

So if you ask me what I am grateful for its for all the amazing resources and opportunities that CHHA has provided for me and continues to provide for me. They gave me a community to talk to when i need it, the chance to be a mentor to share my experience and now that i am embarking on the next step of my hearing loss journey at 45 years old I have enrolled in Gallaudet to learn ASL to make my world more accessible they even provided me a cheering section to remind me I got this.

Thanks for sharing your story Kellina

"Growing up, I never really felt like I was part of a community. As someone who became deaf at the age of four, navigating the world often felt isolating—especially in environments where I was the only Deaf person. I remember constantly searching online for spaces where I could truly belong, connect, and be understood.

That’s when I came across CHHA (Canadian Hard of Hearing Association). What caught my attention was how much they genuinely care about building connections through mentorship, workshops, and resources for those seeking guidance and community. For someone like me—who spent her early years in a hearing school—this kind of support would have made such a difference growing up.

Today, I’m grateful to see organizations like CHHA making it easier for young people and adults to find the mentorship and peer support they need to thrive. If you’re searching for a space where you can be seen, supported, and inspired, definitely check out CHHA and see if it’s the right fit for your journey."

11/04/2025

The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association has recently formed a development group which aims to create a national cochlear implant (CI) report card to address disparities in access to CI across Canada.

This group, comprised of CI users and hearing health professionals, is in the process of collecting data to assess five key areas:

1. Wait time from initial referral to surgery

2. Post-operative rehabilitative care

3. Geographical barriers for access to care (rural vs. urban)

4. Financial assistance for device maintenance and upgrades

5. Access to multidisciplinary care

As a prospective or current CI user, your input will be valuable to help ensure there is equitable and timely care for all Canadians who benefit from CIs, regardless of location.

Click on the link to complete the Cochlear Implant Patient Experience Survey, which will take 15-20 minutes: https://forms.office.com/r/azS1w0iM56. The survey will close on November 15.

On behalf of the development group, we thank you in advance for your time. If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Bowen Tang at bwntang888@gmail.com.
